Its only been 1 mth w/ostomy & tried 2 drink fruit juice but output was real watery. B4 surgery was able 2 tolerate any juice. Is that normal when it comes 2 juice tolerance?

Hi Francis. Yes, that's normal. We checked in with our Ostomy Product Specialist, and he looked at the Wound Management Specialist Guide from the Wound Care Education Institute: "In the OMS manual, WCEI advises fruit juice as one the foods the can lead to loose stool.
If the patient has an ileostomy:
Ileostomates lose at least 250-500 cc fluid that would normally be absorbed by an individual with an intact colon; therefore, ileostomy patients must increase their daily fluid intake by at least 1-2 glasses and must remember that they are at high risk for rapid dehydration.”
      Treatment:
      • Drink a combination of water and electrolyte beverages
      • Daily intake should by 8-10 eight-ounce glasses
      • Eating foods that are low in fiber may help prevent irritation of digestive tract, including diarrhea.
It also suggests to develop a regular eating pattern and experiment with timing and size of meals for acceptable stoma function.”
So, if you want to still drink fruit juice, make sure you drink it when you're eating something bulky, like carbs, and try small amounts of different kinds to see how they affect you differently. Best of luck!

Question. Is it already to consume foods like chia or any other type of small seeds for people with an ostomy? ..for example in oatmeal

It seems to depend person to person. Laura can eat small seeds and nuts, but can't eat fruit skins, whereas other ostomates have the opposite problem. If you haven't been diagnosed with diverticulitis and you have already tried ground chia and other seeds, and they don't bother you, then we would suggest following Laura's method that she describes as eating very small amounts to see what your body can tolerate, so you don't end up with a blockage. Best of luck!

Are sandwiches hard 2 digest with colostomy? Thank you.

Hi again! Good question. So, totally depends on the sandwich. There are many different components. First up, the bread - it's it's really fibrous, that could be problem, or if it contains seeds, that could be a problem. You could try starting with white bread and see if that works for you. Next up: cheese, which some people find constipates them. And then veggies: Laura, for instance, has trouble digesting vegetable skins. So she could have de-skinned tomatoes, but regular tomatoes and lettuce and onions might create a blockage. As long as you try all the individual pieces first and find you don't have a problem, then you can move on to having, let's say, maybe a bite of someone else's sandwich and seeing how that goes before making/ordering your own.

Do people lose weight after on ileostomy?

Eating with an ostomy. My advice is to use a nutrition bullet for breakfasts (especially if your weight training). Raw broccoli x3shoots asparagus x2, raw egg x2 white, Scottish oats 3tbs, bannana x1 and water to mix 400 to 500 ml. After drinking this down, I start to feel an inferno of power within me. I usually break my meals into 6 small ones but train before my last 2 meals. It's all about drip feeding energy to feel like you once did before you had the opp.. like a reactor 💪
