Gotta say, you can't judge his character based on the original. Between the original and this performance, I would say this one is actually more realistic. Having a son who is on the spectrum, the physical mannerisms are spot on here. The smile is a nervous tic that many people with social anxiety disorder display. VERY well done, Daniel! This smile could also be pitch control. NOT an easy song to carry through due to the range within it.
The way he holds his body tho.... How he aekwardly holds his hands tightly and his arms bent close to his chest, the way is back is straight but shoulders are hunched, how is neck is bent... He is honestly perfect as this role and I can't get over it
I've watched every rendition of this that I can find online and this one is by far the best in my opinion. I got chills and cried when the other voices came in. Beautiful!
of you can't compare him to ben (for many many reasons) but i kinda liked how he played the character and my favorite detail was him fumbling with the strap from his backpack. i always used to do that when i was really nervous.
They should have done the choreography for the other characters in that end part, cause it's kind of awkward with them just standing there around him. But other than that this performance was amazing, you would make such a great Evan
is evan supposed to be on the spectrum or just awkward? Ben Platt portrayed him as more awkward and I can see how some might intepret the character to be on the spectrum than he is. not sure how it gives to the characters story. THis guys voice is really good and he acts very well.. well done!
Whether he has anxiety or some other mental disorder is probably up to the audience. He could be perceived as someone with high-functioning autism. People with high-functioning autism are often able to think just as well as their peers (I would know, I have it), but some symptoms of autism are still a thing. Fidgeting, anxious habits (though not always caused by social anxiety), and difficulty in social situations/social interactions (such as stuttering/tripping over words, being passive in speech) are the most notable signs of high-functioning autism. I think that this Evan either has REALLY bad social anxiety, or high-functioning autism (or maybe even both, that CAN happen).
I really like Ben Platt - and I can't tell you how disappointed I am that he took the movie role of Evan. Generosity would have become him in letting a younger artist take the role. Love the play - am choosing not to watch the movie.
Incredible!
His voice is amazing but his acting is astounding... phenomenal

Daxxla Fuu Ikr he even has the little movements
it's entirely possible he uses smile to add brightness to his voice in order to sound like a teenager.
