Slide 2: Make sure to check out my core and fringe video on UA-cam.
Video by Rebecca Eisenberg Speech-language Pathologist
Slide 3: Do we add every word in your child’s AAC device?
    Slide 4: Nope.
Slide 5: What is descriptive teaching?
Slide 6: “The Descriptive Teaching Model is a strategy that teaches the concepts behind context specific vocabulary by using high-frequency, reusable, common words (sometimes referred to as core vocabulary words)” (Van Tatenhove, 2009).
Slide 7: “Students participate and demonstrate learning using COMMON words to describe define or predict.” (Witkowski & Baker, 2012)
Slide 8: What words should we use in descriptive teaching?
    We should use core words!
This will help our children problem solve, be creative thinkers and better communicators!
Slide 9: Let’s watch some examples
Slide 10: Example 1, I want funny pig show. I understand you want Peppa Pig!
Slide 11: Example 2, I have brown, long nice dog. Yes, great way to describe!

Slide 18: Example 9, Welcome to the Assembly! Meet with teachers and friends in big room.
Slide 19: Example 10, When reading a book, define and describe words instead of programming every word.
Slide 20: Work with your child’s team when adding words to the talker!
Slide 21: When adding new fringe word s, consider the following:
    1. Can I use vocabulary?
    2. Will this word be used often?
    3. Navigation to get to new word
Slide 22: Increased navigation with a demand on memory can cause frustration
Slide 23: We want words to be:
    1. Reuseable
    2. Easy to navigate to
    3. Require less memory

This is a nice video. You've captured the main points of the Descriptive Teaching Strategy as originally defined by Bruce R Baker. It is aligned with what I've been teaching for the past 20 years. Keep up the good work.

Great video. I have one request, could you please read what is on the screen. I am legally blind and had to keep stopping the video and enlarging it in order to read it. It would be impossible for other people who are blind, visually impaired or have disabilities that make it hard for them to understand or read printed text. Thank you.
