Why did the Chinese boo their Olympic champion?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 лют 2025
- On August 3rd at the Paris Olympics, the women's table tennis singles final was a showdown between two Chinese players: Chen Meng and Sun Yingsha. The Chinese audience should be proud no matter who wins, but that wasn't the case. They overwhelmingly cheered for Sun Yingsha and booed Chen Meng. Chen defeated Sun and defended her Olympic title in a 4-2 match. However, Chen upset the Chinese. The answer is money and China's gold medal strategy.

Small countries like South Korea, Australia have won spectacularly given the number of medals against the population.
Did you say small? South Korea is 50 million people. But yes, especially doing well relative to land size.
Chen is in a world of pain, despite her right as an individual to compete and win. Integrity in sport is important. If this happened in cricket, it would be considered matchfixing and all those involved would be banned from the sport. This would also happen in most sports, because people who gamble money on a fixed event would be demanding refunds. This entire affair stinks.
I am glad Chen won. She defended her title and proves that at her age you can still win against those who are quite younger.

It sounds worse in China but it is about money in most countries. It is no longer about people playing together; business has taken over.
True most sports are business-owned. Only the Olympics is… again not a sport, but an exercise in nationalism.
What evidence do you have that it was fixed so that one would get gold and the other silver? Being opinionated again eh?
All countries are focused on winning gold medals.
Those sports you mentioned are ALL popular in China. Diving and Swimming do not have limited facilities. Only need to look at the many sports stadiums around the country which have swimming pools in them. Even most communities have swimming pools in them.
Shooting? There are many places that have shooting ranges. Just because the public do not have access to guns does not mean they cannot go to shooting ranges to take up the sport. The U.K public does not have guns but they have shooting facilities.
At least China does not poach foreign talent like the U.S does. How many Olympians in Summer and Winter sports are actually foreigners by birth.
As for doping. The U.S fail to ban athletes who have been found to have doped and the US falsifies the results.
Many have been allowed to compete in international competitions.
You really show your ignorance about sports in China and what the athletes want and like. Never show any evidence of your claims. Oh and Basketball: , Table tennis , Badminton , Swimming, volleyball are the most popular sports in China. Soccer
( football) is more a regional thing with it being more popular in Southern regions. China also does not play games against stronger European or S.American nations so cannot develop as well as it wants. Taking on Japan, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam and South Korea is not the same as facing Italy, Spain, Germany or France on a regular basis.

Thanks for sharing, it's hard for me as an American to comprehend the facilities not existing and people not having the disposable income to choose their hobbies and businesses not opening to provide those services. I'm so sorry they don't have freedom😢
I don't know where you grew up here in the States, but there are a boatload of sports not readily accessible to most kids. Either the schools or local regions lack certain sports entirely, or the cost of access (facilities, gear, training, etc) is simply too high for most families to afford. It's just the way it is. Nothing to do with "freedom" unless you mean financial freedom.
Lei is not entirely accurate. Gyms with decent equipment and pools can be found all over China. The vast majority of people simply cannot afford access. You're not going to see a family surviving on 1500 rmb (~$210 usd) per month dumping money into health club memberships. Any disposable income would go toward instrument lessons; math, science and English tutors; exam prep, etc.
As far as elite athletes, how/where they train depends on their sport. We have multiple dedicated Olympic facilities around the U.S. Some athletes choose to train in their own locations with their own coaches, and others train at these facilities. I suspect the CCP takes it to the extreme and requires its athletes to train only under its watchful eye at approved facilities.
[EDIT: I should mention that many of the previously mentioned health club chains, gyms and pools have closed in recent months due to the deteriorating economy in China. Many of the people I know who had annual memberships simply lost their money -- unrecoverable. The companies would close up shop--some literally overnight--and the owners would disappear with the money. Employees and members found out the next day when they showed up to locked (and sometimes emptied) facilities. That, or they went bankrupt due to over-expansion/over-supply. So, while there are still quite a few facilities available, they're not nearly as widespread as in recent years.]
I think it’s the same story everywhere. But China is an odd country. Kids are in school all day (and practically all night) and sure there are compulsory exercises but on the whole access to sports facilities is limited and not least because most youngsters spend all their time studying.
In western countries hobbies and sports are encouraged. I don’t mean that all sports are easily accessible but in my country typically kids will go swimming, play soccer and have access to some kind of gym at the very least. And if you show talent then ways and means will be found to draw out that talent.
In China I believe that the athletic kids are sent off to boarding schools for intensive training aimed at one thing. It’s a fairly brutal system that really has nothing to do with developing the children. It’s all about the glory of China.
Edit: sorry just watched the vid thru and this idea of the kids being placed into seclusion is highlighted.

Your point about the Table tennis match are on point..
But every other point is weak amd pathetic. Country's win medals in unpopular sports many times..there is no need to criticise that. Besides China has broken into several sports that were earlier western dominated. It's an achievement for any nation.
As an Indian who has often been utterly dissapointed with ny Country's Olympic performance..seeing another Asian country (though a geopolitical rival), is something I'm deeply impressed with.
Especially given that China is an Academics focused nation, similar to India.
Of course the Olympics is about friendship but also winning medals. Why condemn China's way of producing winners when other countries also doing their best to get winners. Prize moneys are given by most countries to there winners and what is so wrong if China reward their winners?
Yeah, Pakistan did great in the men's javelin! Cool to see a person from India cheering on - and being impressed with - Pakistan!😃👍
@@MARKCRASTO Even for the table tennis point, I only see speculation here. Anyone who actually follows it won’t be surprised as to the fan’s behaviour - Shasha’s fans always show up in greater numbers and are more vocal than any others. The coaches’ reactions didn’t surprise me either.
As for the players not enjoying the sport and only being interested in money etc, it’s again speculation presented as knowledge, which I find rather grating - even if there could well be truth in it.

Many people don't understand If you have a person who's really strong and worked so hard persuading their ultimate dream that person is full of adrenalin, specially a sportsman, and even much more when someone is on doping. Putting a lid on the pot to avoid escaping the steam makes it force to explode. I am sure her adrenalin went even higher when everybody start boo her. That made her stronger because of the anger inside. She knew If she would have let win the other she needed to defend herself to other people for the rest of her life undermining her pride. I am sure her coach always keep repeating what she must do made the anger only worse and the booing was only the cherry on the cake to raise her adrenalin sky high.
After I found out about this, I felt so bad for Chen Meng 😢. What they expect her to do? Let her opponent win? Plus, if u still get defeat then u simply not good enough. She deserve the win tho❤

I was cheering for the Chinese team during the Paris Olympics. That was one of the most bizarre thing about the Chines Team I can't understand till today.
I ceased looking at Olympic games almost 20 years ago, when I realised the amount of money that was spent each time. Now it is not a question of money but a question of nationalism. In reality, Most athlete do sport for the money, only people with a stable income do sport for the sheer love of it
I have no sympathy for that disobedient player. Yes, I can see the element of tragedy there, but I don't feel for any of these Master's dogs. On the individual level, they may have paid exorbitant efforts personally and suffered through inhuman hardships to get to that Olympic champion podium, but compared to common ordinary Chinese people, they are still the privileged few. It takes hundreds of millions of taxpayer's money to train an Olympic champion in China. To make sure they don't fall victim to the awful grisly food safety issues in China like the rest of us, they even get the "special supply foods" that are purposedly produced for high rank officials. It's all pure and natural, but only for those "important people", not even for sale to the public. Story is that the grains are grown in the state-owned farms in Turpan region as the soil is much cleaner there as there is little heavy industrial pollution there. The rest of us? we have to eat and drink poison every day, every meal. As a slave, it's hard to feel sorry for the Master's pets even if occasionally they get beaten.

Interesting insights 👍
Sportsmanship has gone to the toilet.
A fan said this after China losing to Japan 0:7: if players can't kick the ball, they can kick the players on the other team [to win].
Today, China is the great power in table tennis, but facts like this can begin to undermine the performance of athletes, and cause other countries where the competition is fair to start surpassing China, as has already happened this year on a few occasions.
She was probably told by her "superiors" to throw the game but decided to give them the finger.
I really feel for the Chinese men’s gymnast team who lost gold to Japan…..they must surely feel the wrath of their masters.
I have a different theory as to why none of the athletes qualified.
The loss of unskilled workers also affects athletes since they are the ones most exposed to the elements.
Today, a champion in any game isn't based on his talent, but corruption is the champion 😊
Thank you for this excellent exposé. This treatment of athletes and families is despicable. Potential future Olympians are identified then dehumanized at a young age. They are fed to the gold medal factory strictly for propaganda purposes.
Happens in the USA too. Athletes have been abused and threatened and even team mates have been ostracised

This isn’t a sports-related comment, but I think Lei should consider using a larger version of Winnie the Pooh behind her. It’s a clever political statement-well done, Lei!
That's that
Well, the Olympics has always been a political pawn. First the Soviet bloc and now China. Though, I've not heard that in the Soviet era that an athlete was expected to lose over another one for some gain or other. Maybe it happened. Maybe not. What happed to Chen Meng is disgraceful, though. At this stage of the medal count, the USA stands equal with the USA in total gold medals but has drawn well ahead in total medal count. The USA is very strong in athletics so that is likely to push the US ahead of China in the gold medal count.
I like this shorter style of video. It's easier to make time for it.
Agree.. sometimes I don't even click videos that are close to an hour long .. I don't want to watch videos quarter or halfway when I have only 20 mins for half hour to eat lunch
Both Chen and Sun represent excellence in their sport. China should be proud of both of them. I am sure the rest of the world congratulates and respects the skill of both.
Li Na is one of my favorite tennis players - I was happy to see china win gold in the women’s tennis Paris Olympics
Gold medals are generally considered the basis of medal tally standings in most countries…I don’t think that alone should be held against them but other criticisms are valid.
Agree! Gold medals are Olympic champions. Silver and Bronze are the 1st and 2nd losers. 1 gold medal is superior to 1000 silver medals, and 1 silver is superior to 1000 bronze. You compete for the gold!
Mind-blowing analysis! The effort behind creating this script must have been immense-truly impressive work!
12:36 Wow! But i kinda feel the same as an American, but i get your overall point for sure. Great video.
That is insane, and sick. It defeats the whole purpose of sports and Olympics. The whole focus on who has more medals is foolish, the US is guilty of this also.
Chinese players don’t play to compete, they play to survive

The thing that CCP often over looks is not only does USA win most medals. Many of medal winners from outside USas are actually living and training in USA. Many who represent other countries are U.S. citizens. Top French swimmer lives and trains in USA. Gold medal pole vaulter was born and raised in USA and still lives in USA. He even had to learn how to speak Swedish for interviews. …how many people leave their country to live in China? 😂
Thank you for telling the truth about the government ofCommunist China’s manipulation of the Olympics.
Wang Liping won the inaugural 20km walk in Sydney in 2000. But she was not supposed to win. She was there to pace the Chinese favorite. In protest, the entire Chinese team withdrew from the event including from the stadium but did not tell her. When she won the gold, no one from her team was there to congratulate or hand her a flag. The Australians seeing her alone celebrated with her.
Everyone of the Chinese audience is a Ambassador for their Country. The World sees this behaviour( booing etc) and may think all Chinese are rude.
Paid actors or not it is a disgraceful show.
Uncouth and rude. Naughty children will not even do this behaviour.
The current Olympics are fortunate that I’m not in charge because I would get rid of the screwball/sissy “sports” like badminton, table tennis, break dancing, curling, synchronized swimming and others.

Thanks a million for this analysis, I also reacted at the actions of Chinese crowd during that Table Tennis final and was glad Chen Meng won. It was very clear who the Chinese crowd wanted to win. That was not the Olympian spirit at all. Congratulations to Chen for for her resilience that great sportsmanship. History will be kind to her. You are also correct that the CCTV choose to show most sport events form this Paris Olympics, where the Chinese won and even when it was live they delayed it by 1 min.
That's wild that the ladies basketball team didn't get to a Bronze Medal elimination game.

CCP DOES NOT PROMOTE THE CONCEPT OF TEAM SPORTS IN THEIR CULTURE
When the Chinese are caught doping it taints all of their country's sports programs. What pride is in that?
Are those football earrings in celebration of the Olympics?
😃😃😃
Thanks for elucidating this bizarre situation. This weird dynamic between the CCP and Chinese athletes is surprising.
I must say that your command of English is really exemplary! Ambrosial, really.
It's rare to hear anyone use English with such precision and beauty. Wow
She sponsored by anti China propagandidts, she's not even from China 😂
Regarding specifically Chen Meng it's a bit of exaggeration, SY for sure was in favor by the bosses since she looks more attractive from sponsorship point of view, but CM was well prepared for the tournament in general and the final game, and this would not have been possible without the fare attitude and assistance from the team members. As for the sport itself, no matter what titles SY wins in the future, she will forever be the person who lost twice in the Olympic final to a greater player.
