Why did the Chinese boo their Olympic champion?

  • On August 3rd at the Paris Olympics, the women's table tennis singles final was a showdown between two Chinese players: Chen Meng and Sun Yingsha. The Chinese audience should be proud no matter who wins, but that wasn't the case. They overwhelmingly cheered for Sun Yingsha and booed Chen Meng. Chen defeated Sun and defended her Olympic title in a 4-2 match. However, Chen upset the Chinese. The answer is money and China's gold medal strategy.

And those countries seem to be quite happy when they get medals and win championships. An example - my country gave political asylum to an athlete who brought us a gold medal from Tokyo OG and a silver medal now. Should the athletes be representing a country were they don't live anymore and where they were sometimes being threatened just because it's their birth place? Now, that is for me even weirder. What evidence do you have that it was fixed so that one would get gold and the other silver? Being opinionated again eh?
All countries are focused on winning gold medals.
Those sports you mentioned are ALL popular in China. Diving and Swimming do not have limited facilities. Only need to look at the many sports stadiums around the country which have swimming pools in them. Even most communities have swimming pools in them.
Shooting? There are many places that have shooting ranges. Just because the public do not have access to guns does not mean they cannot go to shooting ranges to take up the sport. The U.K public does not have guns but they have shooting facilities.
At least China does not poach foreign talent like the U.S does. How many Olympians in Summer and Winter sports are actually foreigners by birth.
As for doping. The U.S fail to ban athletes who have been found to have doped and the US falsifies the results.
Many have been allowed to compete in international competitions.
You really show your ignorance about sports in China and what the athletes want and like. Never show any evidence of your claims. Oh and Basketball: , Table tennis , Badminton , Swimming, volleyball are the most popular sports in China. Soccer
( football) is more a regional thing with it being more popular in Southern regions. China also does not play games against stronger European or S.American nations so cannot develop as well as it wants. Taking on Japan, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam and South Korea is not the same as facing Italy, Spain, Germany or France on a regular basis.

I don't know where you grew up here in the States, but there are a boatload of sports not readily accessible to most kids. Either the schools or local regions lack certain sports entirely, or the cost of access (facilities, gear, training, etc) is simply too high for most families to afford. It's just the way it is. Nothing to do with "freedom" unless you mean financial freedom.
Lei is not entirely accurate. Gyms with decent equipment and pools can be found all over China. The vast majority of people simply cannot afford access. You're not going to see a family surviving on 1500 rmb (~$210 usd) per month dumping money into health club memberships. Any disposable income would go toward instrument lessons; math, science and English tutors; exam prep, etc.
As far as elite athletes, how/where they train depends on their sport. We have multiple dedicated Olympic facilities around the U.S. Some athletes choose to train in their own locations with their own coaches, and others train at these facilities. I suspect the CCP takes it to the extreme and requires its athletes to train only under its watchful eye at approved facilities.
[EDIT: I should mention that many of the previously mentioned health club chains, gyms and pools have closed in recent months due to the deteriorating economy in China. Many of the people I know who had annual memberships simply lost their money -- unrecoverable. The companies would close up shop--some literally overnight--and the owners would disappear with the money. Employees and members found out the next day when they showed up to locked (and sometimes emptied) facilities. That, or they went bankrupt due to over-expansion/over-supply. So, while there are still quite a few facilities available, they're not nearly as widespread as in recent years.]

I think it’s the same story everywhere. But China is an odd country. Kids are in school all day (and practically all night) and sure there are compulsory exercises but on the whole access to sports facilities is limited and not least because most youngsters spend all their time studying.
In western countries hobbies and sports are encouraged. I don’t mean that all sports are easily accessible but in my country typically kids will go swimming, play soccer and have access to some kind of gym at the very least. And if you show talent then ways and means will be found to draw out that talent.
In China I believe that the athletic kids are sent off to boarding schools for intensive training aimed at one thing. It’s a fairly brutal system that really has nothing to do with developing the children. It’s all about the glory of China.
Edit: sorry just watched the vid thru and this idea of the kids being placed into seclusion is highlighted.

Many people don't understand If you have a person who's really strong and worked so hard persuading their ultimate dream that person is full of adrenalin, specially a sportsman, and even much more when someone is on doping. Putting a lid on the pot to avoid escaping the steam makes it force to explode. I am sure her adrenalin went even higher when everybody start boo her. That made her stronger because of the anger inside. She knew If she would have let win the other she needed to defend herself to other people for the rest of her life undermining her pride. On the individual level, they may have paid exorbitant efforts personally and suffered through inhuman hardships to get to that Olympic champion podium, but compared to common ordinary Chinese people, they are still the privileged few. It takes hundreds of millions of taxpayer's money to train an Olympic champion in China. To make sure they don't fall victim to the awful grisly food safety issues in China like the rest of us, they even get the "special supply foods" that are purposedly produced for high rank officials. It's all pure and natural, but only for those "important people", not even for sale to the public. Story is that the grains are grown in the state-owned farms in Turpan region as the soil is much cleaner there as there is little heavy industrial pollution there. The rest of us? we have to eat and drink poison every day, every meal. As a slave, it's hard to feel sorry for the Master's pets even if occasionally they get beaten.

Though, I've not heard that in the Soviet era that an athlete was expected to lose over another one for some gain or other. Maybe it happened. Maybe not. What happed to Chen Meng is disgraceful, though. At this stage of the medal count, the USA stands equal with the USA in total gold medals but has drawn well ahead in total medal count. The USA is very strong in athletics so that is likely to push the US ahead of China in the gold medal count.
