There could be more if she had money for more food for them, but she hadn't, so they started to eat their young. And volunteers didn't let the rats be killed, they rushed to catch them so they could be given new homes. They do, however, sometimes help wild rats, but usually it's either little baby rats whom they raise as domesticated ones or, in rare occasions, if someone picks up a heavily injured rat that couldn't survive on its own. I mean, yeah, the last one sounds pretty strange, considering how many wild rats must be killed by other animals, but recently there was a rat that got mauled by a dog and was hiding under a car for two days, so the people who saw that were impressed by her will to live and called help for her. Rats were left in cages near the trash cans, needed homes after being used for behaviour science studies or after being used in a making of a movie, there were rats from some "eco-center" for kids that closed because of the pandemic. People can be really irresponsible. There were abandoned rats with tumors, tumors being bigger than those rats themselves =(
There once was an animal hoarder who got rats of different sex and let them multiply without giving the new rats away and when her neighbours finally made the authorities make something about that, there were about 700 rats in her appartment. There could be more if she had money for more food for them, but she hadn't, so they started to eat their young. And volunteers didn't let the rats be killed, they rushed to catch them so they could be given new homes. There also was one time then someone just released a lot of fancy rats at the park and they were hiding under a pile of branches and such, so people had to pick that pile apart to catch them.
They do, however, sometimes help wild rats, but usually it's either little baby rats whom they raise as domesticated ones or, in rare occasions, if someone picks up a heavily injured rat that couldn't survive on its own. I mean, yeah, the last one sounds pretty strange, considering how many wild rats must be killed by other animals, but recently there was a rat that got mauled by a dog and was hiding under a car for two days, so the people who saw that were impressed by her will to live and called help for her. She lost both her hind legs, but after her stitches healed up she can move pretty quickly and now found a home as a pet rat (of course, her owners know that she is a wild rat and handle her accordingly).
