  • I'll get this out there early, I'm not the biggest fan of Kazakhstan's capital. It's not that it offended me, it just didn't excite me. It has also had 5 name changes in 70 years, 3 of those in the last 30. It's a city with an identity crisis

Oh absolutely, Central Asia as a whole is extremely clean and tidy and much less polluted than South Asia and South East Asia

Ah it's got nothing on Tallinn though! I worked in Tallinn 10 years ago, love it there!

The steppes in the North of Kazakhstan were mostly grassland. They are very well suited for cattle breeding, as there is a huge area for pasture. Perhaps because of this, the Kazakhs lived for centuries in a semi-nomadic manner and were mostly engaged in cattle breeding. I believe it was a huge mistake to try to make an agricultural place out of them. Growing wheat in these regions led to soil erosion.

Yeah, generally if nature hasn't been able to sustain growing trees, bushes or any native flora in a few million years then it's probably a pretty good sign it's not good cropping land

You are on the left bank of the Ertis River, it's like a new city and there are few trees. There are mainly business centers and government agencies. As we say, Astana is a city of busy workers and government officials. On the right bank (the old city) there are quite a lot of trees and mostly there are residental areas.

Do you know of a Kolchos No. 1 in Tselinograd. My husband grew up there from 1945 to 1956. I know they had a lot of life stock there. I wonder if it still exists?
