So honored that someone from US is willing to learn my language! Don't give up and don't look too much after congiuntivo, since even the best of us happen to fail sometime! And if you want to practice Italian, come to Rome!
Just a suggestion if you are looking to practice conversing in Italian. Why not go to a seniors centre and get them to hook you up with an Italian man or woman who would not only love to have someone to talk Italian to, but would be thrilled for the company you would provide. You have a desire to learn and great people skills for someone your age, and I think it would be a win / win.
I'm Italian and I know that our language is very difficult. I can understand everything you say in every single video and I'm good in conversation too, but I swear that even Italians make mistakes sometimes because our grammar is really hard. Good luck, love u❤
You're correct my Italian tutor in Italy even makes mistakes. That being said everyone in their native language makes mistakes in that Language all the time. English is my first language, I make mistakes all the time lol.
I could never understand why somebody could willingly start to learn italian cus the grammar is such a nightmareee but them I remember that I chose to study ancient greek and that madness has always been a part of human's minds
Saying as someone who learned Italian, I cannot understand your assertion, really.
Love your italian videos, I am Italian and did study abroad in Portland, Oregon, I understand all your struggles with grammar, cause italians struggle too! Bravo!!
maria giulia : I know this comment is a year old but where did you study in Portland? I have lived in Portland my whole life but am trying to study abroad in Italy! 😊🇮🇹
I took Italian at Hunter College (in NYC) for only 2 semesters. That was years ago. After watching Call Me By Your Name in December 2017, I fell in love with Italy all over again. Now, I am (trying my best to re)learn Italian. I have not been to Italia...yet. As long as I can speak basic Italian while there, I will be fine. I wish I still had my college textbook but I guess for now, my Italian travel phrasebook will have to suffice. Good luck with keeping up with the language. Ciao bello!
I'm pretty sure you can easily find Italian people that would like to practise their English skills, so you both could make a kind of a deal and help each others!
After my first trip to France in my 20s (solo), I decided I wanted to learn the language. I came back, took an immersion course, then flew back for five weeks. I ended up dating a man (in the south of France) who was older than me and only spoke French and German... At home in NYC I read French magazines (surprisingly helpful).. Between the trips back and forth, and speaking constantly with French people, I got pretty good.. Broke up with the French (actually Corsican) man, but continued to use French anytime I was in Paris, Nice or Montreal! Fast forward many years (marriage, divorce, nursing degree... LOL, I'm probably close to your mom's age), it still comes back IF I use it.. It is so much fun speaking a foreign language! I plan to start with the Duolingo! Goals!
Cameron! I could not agree with you more! Experiencing it when I was abroad was the only way to become comfortable with Italian! I miss it so much... Get psyched for when Suburra comes to netflix this year! I really think this series has a lot of promise!
don't worry about the congiuntivo, many italians don't know it either hahah Anyway, florence and milan are two exceptions because they are turist areas and people are used to turists and switch to english but go everywhere else and I can assure you nobody will speak english to you haha
To be honest many italians don't know how to use grammar properly either! Especially the congiuntivo that you mention, nobody uses properly! I think it will disappear from the Italian language soon. I am Italian and I have difficulty reading Dante or Petrarca so don't worry too much. Keep up the good work with your videos!
I LOVED THIS VIDEO! You cracked me up... I'm just beginning to learn Italian so I was looking for people's thoughts on learning the language - you came up first. Thanks for the insights and for your very entertaining take on language process.
Haha!! Wow! :P
Loved your video! Definitely the parts about the grammar etc :p I've been learning Italian for about 4 years, but this is literally the best description of a language learning process I've ever heard! Keep it up ;) and if you're looking for Italian movies, you can try la meglio gioventù (my teacher said it's a movie, but it's actually a mini series)
I've never related to something so much in my entire life. Learning German for me made me realize how little I actually knew English grammar haha. Like you said, it's amazing how "difficult" we speak with out even realizing it (switching tenses and how English prepositions work etc, etc.).
I've taken 7 years of Spanish but stopped when I went to university because I feel that I've reached a comfortable level of proficiency where I can speak with native speakers and have a decent conversation. I'll hopefully be learning French in a formal classroom setting as soon as I have room in my course schedule, but for the moment I'm teaching myself Norwegian and Portuguese with duolingo and speaking with native speakers when I get the chance (I teach English to international students at my school, so I get a chance to hear all different languages)
I'm learning Italian as well and like you I understand Italian more than I speak. Also like you because I didn't speak Italian for a few months I did forget a lot of what I learnt.
Idk why but I started looking at your "Italian" videos, I should say. I'm Italian, fist of all, but I'm doing a study abroad experience in Canada right now (I'm 17). I really feel what you are talking about because I wasn't very good at English when I arrived here in Canada, but listening and speaking helps a lot. I suggest you to keep practicing the speaking part (I found it the most difficult, because of the right accent that you have to do), something's I just talk to myself in English so I can hear if it's properly pronounced. Btw now I can understand everything that you said in those videos and I'm really proud of my self, I suggest you to start watching movies in italian (also with Italian subtitles, if it helps you) and listening to Italian music (even if it's not the best one). I hope to have written in a corrected English. Love u ✨
Woo! Studying Dante is hard even for us! And I'm sure you are better than many italians in conjugate verbs properly :D And the passion you have for our language, I have it for English 😍
I've just realized how difficult my language could be for a foreigner...I'm studying English and German and let me tell you, I'm going thorough all you mentioned in this video with German. It is so hard and the level required (3rd year of university) is so high that sometimes I regret my choices...
I am italian and I admit it's a difficult language. Lot of italians don't remember all the rules and the exceptions so I imagine for a person who is learning italian how it could be difficult to understand everything and have a clear context about it.
I'm Italian and I can speak spanish and since I want to be an interpreter one day I'm learning english, korean, portuguese and german. I started with korean because, you won't believe it, it is the easier one
Dude, the subjunctive is not used very often in modern English. It is used however in Italian. When we use it incorrectly in Italian it is very noticeable and is a sign of a person who is not educated in his own language . Spero che tu mi capisca! LOL
Congiuntivo in Italian has the same function s "If I WERE you, I would...". Only thing, it's much WIDELY used and all the fucking persons have a different inflection and 30000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 irregular verbs.
I went to Florence with my Italian-class two months ago. I have been studying Italian for three and a half years then and although I almost understood everything speaking is still hard. The funny thing is that I think their English is so bad and full of Italian words they might have as well just have continued speaking Italian and I would have understood just as much. The most embarrassing moment was when I forgot to properly pronounce the "r" in "carne" (in Austria we often "swallow" that letter when we're speaking) and basically asked if the panino had no dog in it.
anyways i agree, Italian people dont speak a good english and school is useless bc the teachers themselves cant speak the language so you cant practice your English and its a big fat mess
I'm English, learnt french at school and went to work and live in France for 8 months and now I speak it fluently. I'm trying to think of another language to learn. Spanish doesn't interest me that much but I think Italian could. Would you recommend learning it after learning french? And any advice ?
Hi Toby, I think Italian can be a good choice because it's very close to French in terms of grammar, vocabulary and syntax. So you're unlikely to struggle with all this stuff. Plus, pronunciation is very straightforward once you learn the basic rules behind it. If you need any other pieces of advice on this, just hit me up. Cheers, Angelo
Could you explain what you're talking about- the whole 3.5 hours a day thing, calling it a "program", etc - was it not just a class, but like your major/minor or something? An immersion course? Sounds too rigorous and long of a class to be not a part of your major in some way besides just being a requirement? Please let me know the name of your school, the program, the location of where you took the class in italy, and what I should know to describe it to my school counselor so I can look for it in my own college. Was the class boarded somewhere where did you live? And the cost? Thanks!! Great video :)
Fun part is: Florence's probably the only city where almost everyone speaks English. Not many people you'll find on the street are actually fluent in English.
Oh my god You have been In florence I guess I maybe know what project you are talking about, I started doing language exchange also called tandem with them to improve my English
Hahaha omg your videos are so funny, I laughed so much when you talked about congiuntivo I use it without even knowing the rules but I guess it's really hard for foreigners. aww honey, learning a language is hard for everybody, I know, I tutor and see peopel struggle through it all the time, very few are truly gifted and pick it up quickly, and Italian grammar is hard, but we don't use the congiuntivo and harder forms as much, so stick to your basics. It's going to sound strange but if you like Japanese anime, there are tons dubbed into Italian on UA-cam, easier to understand than our telefilm where they often use regional accents, also I don't see many of those on youtube. So if you do, or maybe you can discover some, do searches for specific titles dubbed in Italian and you can keep practicing listening at least :) ciao!
I'm italian and I get why you find it that difficult, I still dont know so many words' meaning 😅 Anyway I've been studying English for 12 years now and Spanish and French for 4 years and there's still so much to learn! Same as you with the speaking, I can't really practice it here😧
why are you learning italian? i'm italian and i can't do nothing with my language, I must know other languages, like English, Spanish or French for work in my country or in other countries, let me now, I'm really curious
Dear friend, congiuntivo is a great challenge for many italians and English might be a second language in big cities but not at all in smaller cities and surely not in the countryside where many, especially elders, live in a continous struggle to speak a good Italian :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D
Wow you really read Dante! As Italian... It's very hard!😂 anyway I know that my language is very difficoult and many italian say wrong sentences... Sorry, I'm so good in Italian (😂) but I'm still learning English
U say u r good at science, but u don't know how harder it is in Italy and france. Just To give u an idea, i'll take The IGCSE exam at the end of the 2year of liceo, the three years after are only more stuff, And considering that the topics in the exam are the whole program of an usa college, i would not say u are better at science than in languages. Languages are the same for everyone, but for science the country decides What u need To know
As an Italian I can vouch for that: Most Italians can't use the subjunctive and if you point it out to them they're gonna be all "That stupid grammar, it doesn't matter if I'm having a conversation"... UHM... NO. IT DOES. Learn your subjunctive or the only people you're gonna talk to are those who would say "I's gonna" in English. Just telling ya... :D
You talk really fast, Omg 😱 Briller is an American who has a UA-cam channel and who talk in Italian, he's good and he can help you 👍🏻 (Parli davvero veloce!
Awww... yeah, when you're in a big city and surrounded by young people it's easy for them to switch to English if they think their English is better than your italian. A solution would be to ask them to speak Italian with you because you want to practice, you could divide the time so they can practice some English as well. Otherwise just befriend older people and I assure you they will only speak Italian ahahha hope you got used to the Tuscan accent, btw ahaha
Well, if you were to come to me and ask me or tell me something in Italian... I'd probably answer in Italian. Just cause idk... I realize that you're a foreigner and I hear you try and speak in Italian... Something makes me think that I have to answer in Italian... So, if you ever come to Rome and meet me, you got someone to practice your Italian with XD
E' normale che nelle citta' turistiche tutti sappiano l'inglese, ma prova ad andare in posto che non siano Firenze, Roma, Venezia e Milano and you're fucked. Non troverai nessuno che sappia altra lingua all'infuori dell'italiano.
alex mentes That would be interesting, since Italy is known as not being a very "gay-friendly" country, you know...Being the core of Catholicism and all that

Sciocchezze. E' facile.
I'm Argentinian and I've been learning Italian for 2 months and I find it super easy, maybe because it's similar to Spanish

In inglese il congiuntivo si chiama "the subjunctive" e si trova in espressioni quali "If I were you".

Hi Toby,
I think Italian can be a good choice because it's very close to French in terms of grammar, vocabulary and syntax. So you're unlikely to struggle with all this stuff. Plus, pronunciation is very straightforward once you learn the basic rules behind it. If you need any other pieces of advice on this, just hit me up.

piece of cake after French.
I didn't find that in Florence. I was surprised at how many people did not speak English.
Fun part is: Florence's probably the only city where almost everyone speaks English. Not many people you'll find on the street are actually fluent in English.

Awww... yeah, when you're in a big city and surrounded by young people it's easy for them to switch to English if they think their English is better than your italian. A solution would be to ask them to speak Italian with you because you want to practice, you could divide the time so they can practice some English as well. Otherwise just befriend older people and I assure you they will only speak Italian ahahha hope you got used to the Tuscan accent, btw ahaha
To be fair prepositions in Italian are just really weird.

Togh niozi u really have learned italian I must say you can't even pronounce her surname right...
Given that you're gay, why don't you tell us about your gay experience?
alex mentes That would be interesting, since Italy is known as not being a very "gay-friendly" country, you know...Being the core of Catholicism and all that
Io capisco tutto.
È una questione di abitudine all'ascolto.
sei tu che non conosci l'inglese

Parla normalmente.
