Evolution Power Tools Multi-material circular saw: I killed it

  • First off, by time this video was uploaded I had completely killed the saw. I made the cuts you saw plus another 17 inches in 3/8 plate, then it died.
Again, 3/8 plate is above Evolution’s specifications so I’m definitely being harder on the saw than is suggested. That said, if you want to cut all day, every day in 1/4 plate, I do t imagine it would hold up to that either.
DEAR TOOL COMPANIES: I will be happy to review your tools. The review will be honest. I will do my best to use the tool like a guy in the field would.
If you are looking for a “cupcake” review or a “product showcase” I’ll do that for you...yeah right.
If you are wondering why I’m cutting so much 3/8, local scrap yard had some 29.5”x10’ cutoffs that I got at $130 a piece.
    As always constructive comments please.

So you cut 3/4" steel plate with a saw and blade rated for 1/8th inch and it's junk because you burned it up? LOL

Evolution sells a blue version for cutting steel... The blade is far more enclosed for a better experience. Give evo a ring and see how hard it is to get spares.

Basic knowledge that every professional should know: USE THE RIGHT TOOL FOR THE TYPE OF WORK TO BE CARRIED OUT, the fact that it is multi-material does not mean that you can cut a ship with it! I have several years with an R185SMS that I use daily on metal and wood without any problem, but I also do not try to cut things that should be cut in a plasma or acetylene cutter, this machine is in no way a substitute for said tools, it is simple logic.

In your description you ask tool companies to let you review their products .......what tool company in their right mind would give you a power tool to review ???? You butchered that saw . Using it in a machine shop fashion to cut thick plate steel like that is not what it was designed to do. Only an idiot buys a circular saw to constantly cut plate steel , regardless of any tool manafacturers claims. It's designed to be a one for all jobsite saw , where a contractor or diy person might occasionally come across timber with nails in it.....or to cut the odd steel bracket , band or brace.....or for electrical conduit , plumbers piping or screws. Those kind of situations. Plate steel is cut with chop saws , angle grinders , gas torches , plasma cutters and con-saws....You can argue with my comment , but anyone who would buy this saw for cutting plate steel only....is basically an idiot.

They sent steel plate pieces to test the saw with.
On the evolution website, in THEIR ad video, they show it cutting square tubing, aluminum diamond plate, and show a pic of a piece of I-beam with an "it cuts it" check next to it. Also website says "max Steel plate thickness 1/8".
Had I wrapped the saw with panty hose(as a filter) before the cuts, it would still running today. Its strong. Only fail with the saw is chip ingress into the brushes. This would happen with ANY size piece of steel over time. A simple redesign of the motor housing would fix it. So even the plumber you mention would suffer a failure, likely at a point where he would just throw it away rather than bother with a warranty claim.
They do make purpose built metal cutting circular saws. I cut 3/4" plate with my Milwaukee all the time. Works super well. No warping and leaves weld ready cuts.
IMO, they are marketing this saw to ppl they hope wont use it.

Only a fool would buy a $90 saw and expect it to cut three times its rated capacity and survive, its a $90 multi material cutting saw, use it as such, if you want a metal cutting saw dish out the $300 for a metal cutting saw.

I concur that Evolution makes quite good tools particularly for the money. It is inappropriate to compare the Evolution to Milwaukee or other truly “Pro” saws. Good review, but I think you were a little disingenuous. First I don’t believe Evolution is blocking your review, it’s Amazon. They restrict reviews to those that bought from them so scammers can’t flood the reviews with biased reviews (hmmm….. seems it worked! ;-). Second, your bias for Milwaukee is exceeded only by the detail of your review. We all have our favorite tool brand, got it. Mine is craftsman because I believe it provides the best value with some level of quality and features. The fact is, that almost all tools are made in China, and they all come from one of just a couple of different factory’s. For example, there are numerous videos online hitting craftsman against Milwaukee tools. In almost all cases, the difference in performance is quite small. That is because they are made either in the same factory, or in very similar factories, with very similar processes and material. There is very little differentiation anymore these days. The difference is that you will pay three times more for a Milwaukee tool, but with few exceptions, you won’t get three times more capability. You might get more longevity that particular pool really does have some quality differences, but since you paid more, we would hope that you get more life out of it. Kind of a law of physics, there is no free lunch, you either pay now or pay later, you still pay, and net net, you pay about the same, with the exception, that if somebody steals your Milwaukee saw you were out a whole lot more than if you bought a cheap saw. Always pros and cons. I think your recommendation about the airflow and putting a free-flowing filter on it is a good idea. And I think that would apply to most saws, and for that matter, probably most tools. For reference, I own the evolution miter saw (The double bevel version of it), and I absolutely love it! Is it perfect? No. It has flaws like everything does for example it has a lot of nooks in crannies that accumulate chips and make it a pain to clean out. But I just make it a habit to do a good cleaning after every cutting job and so it works out. But I will look at adding your filter idea to it :-). One final note, I think you misrepresented the Target application of this song. You compared it to us all the costs maybe three times more, and then on top of it, you abused it by cutting twice the specified thickness of metal that this site is designed to cut. If I did the same thing to the Milwaukee saw, obit, I get about the same results, probably overheating it and dulling the blame as well. Tools are designed for a certain use case, and they should not be used outside of that use case. If you do use the tool outside of the use case, then you should not be surprised if it fails. The chip issue is a reasonable critique, but other tools are subject to this as well, The chip problem being a little more important in this case, since one might be cutting metal. But elsewhere, in the review you sung praises to the base, and the various features of the saw, but then in the end trounced it when you could not get your review posted to Amazon, from which you did not buy it. Given the price differential, the capability and features that this song provides, and that it is not intended for industrial shop use, but rather occasional home and light shop use, and that it opens up metal cutting to those who would not otherwise have access to such capability, and for an affordable price, I really think you owe Evolution an apology for a review that really ends up showing your own bias to Milwaukee and making inappropriate comparisons, IMHO of course ;-)

I was resigned to having my evolution miter saw being a wood cutter after I ruined the original blade on the first day of a metal project. Then I found a Diablo steel demon blade for it, and boy does it ever cut well now. No more chattering, much smoother cuts through steel and the blade still cuts like new after some 200 cuts in metal from 1/16" to 1/4". The cut edges don't have the scaly appearance that the evolution blade left either, they are smooth.
I question why evolution doesn't give you a blade that can cut thicker metal. The 7 1/4" steel demon is rated for up to 3/8" plate, the 10" on my miter saw will cut 1/2".

you can leave a review on it if you purchase through amazon. other ones have some one star reviews now. i would say builds quality is functional. i though the guards and base where plastic so it being cast aluminum is nice, but its just a geared down 100$ circular saw, but its the only low rpm corded circular saw on the market. i would have rather gotten a Makita, dewalt, or skill saw for close to the 100$ for this but im sure the 5000+ rpms would cost me a lot in blades for cutting 14GA- 11GA square tubing. and there warrenty and support is very robust. but, this saw is not a milwaukee metal saw, its just a geared down circular saw good for up to 1/4 but i dont plan on pushing past 1/8
also the air blows out by the blade, doesnt vacuum up there. if they put a fileter by the evoltion word intake i think that could stop the problem that killed yours. i dont see what the diffrence between this one and there metal cutting one is, same motor, same draw, slightly different guard, no chip tray, and a worse stamped steel base. so far better experience then ultra china import companies like yeswelder and amico power

I would suggest the blue saw. Evolution has their other metal cutting saw with a better chip shield $150. Also, maybe fiberglass window screen mesh as a filter?

    • @hu5116
      @hu5116 Рік тому

Yes, their 14” blue saw is more appropriate to this review application. In addition to the larger blade (more teeth run cooler) and slower motor (better matched cutting speed), they also have a special steel blue blade which was not the one used in the review (although I think you can get a steel blue blade for the hand saw too). What was tested is a combination blade, and likely the cited Milwaukee probably used a true steel (like the blue one) blade. So again, we are comparing apples to oranges and then being surprised when apples don’t peel as easily.
