Hey Justin- I’m not entirely surprised that this song is currently at the bottom of the tracks so far… After I see your full reaction to my requests, I’m thinking I can fire some “2nd choice” requests for albums like this one 😁
I had watched that video only an hour ago and liked 'Small Blue Thing' a lot, and also the other song from her debut he reacted to. I'll listen to that album in full some time soon! 😀 So far, I'd only known the 'Solitude Standing' one plus the songs 'Left Of Center' and 'Marlene On The Wall', before watching all of J-Pan's SV videos 🙂
Wouldn't surprise me if that organ was played by Mitchell Froom! He did the same thing when he'd produced Crowded House's debut album and also The Corrs' 'Unplugged' one.
This dreamier vibe in these 90's records IS a nice style, but IMO her flat, understated vocal delivery doesn't really crack through it. Like, it was fine for when she was hunched over a guitar on a stool in a NYC folk club, but put against these bigger LA production settings it sort of gets lost.
Some of her newer songs remind me of Heather Nova's, and also her voice. Heather does sing with more pep, though. Would've suited also Suzanne's songs!
Suzanne said in interviews that she was trying to cop Laurie Anderson's delivery style . Laurie Anderson is a singer that sounds like a spoken word artist. I've always liked Suzanne Vega's music. She came out of nowhere and seemed like she brought back the folkie thing. I've been to a few of her shows over the years. Her style is definitely melancholic and understated which works for moody folky stuff. If you listen to her interviews it is surprising that she is from a pretty tough neighborhood in NYC. I suppose there are other more boisterous folk singers out there if you like.
Another great track from this underrated songwriter/performer. Thanks for exposing her talent to those who are not aware of her.

Do you remember reacting to Small Blue Thing by her awhile ago? You enjoyed it. It’s from the first album.

Yup. Decent song but definitely poppy.
