what's that lyric about digging "fairmont number 9" ? what does that mean, anybody know? i couldn't find the lyrics online anywhere to see if these are even the right words.
That'd be a name of a particular mine is my guess. Mannington No. 9 is another example of a killer coal minin' tune, referencing a collapsed mine in WV
Number 9 is a coal seam designation based on quality. Coal occurs in defined layers underground called seams that can run for hundreds or thousands of feet. They are separated by dirt or rock. Seams of coal are given numbers based on quality of the coal in a seam. 1 to 13, I think. Number nine is a particularly good quality coal seam. Plus it sounds good in a song lyric. Fairmont is probably the name of a mine.
Ramblin Rooks to Band of Ruhks, this is still the best damn song on the planet.
Great song. Ralph Stanley at the beginning is perfection!
This is great music! Wonderfully talented band.

It should be a reference to a specific mine (Fairmont area, mine #9)
Fairmont was a coal company.
They had a huge explosion in 1907
