  • Jill Vialet believes that playing is essential to human development, and addresses significant education reform issues by encouraging greater creativity and problem-solving skills. This approach, she says, creates learning environments where kids feel safer, more engaged and more connected. Jill launched Playworks in 1996 in Berkeley, California. In 2012, Playworks will be bringing play and physical activities to 350 low-income, urban elementary schools in 23 cities, including Albuquerque.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Great new RWJF study out on this very program. Search "New Study: Does Better Recess Equal a Better School Day?"

    Hi there

Our school took on this program and so far the kids hate it. Every child has a Clarence? Great idea, but does that mean they can't run at recess? Our kids can't. Does that mean segregating kids so that certain classes can't play with other classes? Well that's what they are doing. So far it's a terrible program. Now we don't live in an impoverished, intercity with very little playground and no equipment. We are suburban, middle class with good schools and a great playground. The principal is upset because she has to deal with 4 kids at recess so she introduced play works. I'm not impressed so far. More people on the playground great. Someone there to organize sports and games? great idea, but what they are doing at our school is the Gestapo. It's certainly not what Ms. Vialet has talked about here.

That's a problem with that specific Playworks coach, not with the program. I'm a coach myself; there are good coaches and bad coaches.
