Whitechapel (Victorian London's District of Wickedness)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 вер 2022
- Whitechapel was home to all the horrors of late Victorian London, hovels of the poor and working class and a den of crime and all kinds of wickedness. The streets were as dark and dirty as the fetid air between them, for amongst the overcrowded hovels could be found numerous industries where the poor worked long hours and, if not here, the Docklands nearby, employed thousands. Destitute immigrants found accommodation and jobs in the factories and wharfs and so Whitechapel became synonymous with the working class.
Today, you will hear a description of Whitechapel, its living conditions and its inhabitants written in 1861. This genuine report of life in the East End really does make you wonder how people survived a hard life and endless suffering - a situation our author called a 'national disgrace.'

This was almost unimaginable, but there were pictures and the horror can *not* be denied. The image of the little boy sitting on the stair, so tired, hungry and distraught, head in his lap, was heart-wrenching.
Sadly all too true and this is one of many similar stories of how people lived (existed).
1861, my ancestor James Rouse b1818 lived at 34, Lambert Street with his wife b1810 and seventeen others , ie four families at the address. He was working as a street Hawker selling crockery. His wife showing no occupation. Their children had long gone. Things had not improved, other ancestors husband and wife, both b1833 were admitted into the workhouse in 1901.
Fascinating! Imagine toiling on the streets all day to return to a noisy and desperately overcrowded house. Was this street demolished? I can only find a Lambert Street in Islington?
@@FactFeast on the map, if you locate Commercial Road, Lambert Street is on the south side of Commercial Road (a few streets east of Leman Street).
its quite special to know own ancestors history up to 19 centeury...and i truly wish you and your family have a goid living now.🙏
Thank you for sharing your special family history. 1861, I cannot imagine living, working, dying in Whitechapel; district of hard living. James Rouse survived and now has his story being remembered in you. I wonder how many people can trace their lineage too these amazingly strong women, men & children if this era. ✍🏻📝📖
That's so cool that you have so many details and can trace it back like that!
Families starving with no money for food or warmth while Royalty and the 'better sort' who have never known a struggle in their lives judge them for the crime of being poor.
nothings changed then
Some things never change eh
@@aestheticsbyjasmine940 exactly. Sad that people dont seem to understand that this still exists today
Exactly. Poor equals bad, rich/royal equals good. Even though many rich people were not saints.
Minute 17:08-17:50 is heartbreaking to me as a Mother. I could feel the desperation looking at the lifeless child’s body being held by their mother on a street corner. I appreciate your channel so much. The illustrations, photographs and your narration just makes one feel like they are a part of this history. Imagine the air surrounding everything, as this is something we can not share looking back. 😔
It's really nice to know that you think the presentation and narration are fitting for this history. Thank you for your comment.
Another not to be missed introduction to remarkable sources of social history. After listening to this account I've been inspired to chase up a copy of John Hollingshead's 'Ragged London in 1861'. However, the simple reading of it will not match the quality of your narration which really does engage the senses in bring the account to life. A most engaging and challenging education. Thank you, very much.
The pattern of rapid appearance and disappearance through closure of shops in Whitechapel is being mirrored nowadays on every High Street in the UK.
I watch all these videos and wonder how so many suffered so much during such booming years of wealth in the great empire under Victoria. Quite a disgrace
Life was an endless struggle for most people. Thanks for being a regular viewer!
Love this channel. Picked up a copy of Nicholas Nickleby looking for a good long book to read on a cross US flight from michigan to washington. Been hooked on dickens, and further Victorian and similar times readings since. Thanks for all you do to preserve this period of history. See you next week!
I’ll keep serving up stories for you from the past 🥣 I’m glad you enjoy them 🙂
You would enjoy Death and Mr Pickwick. It contains fantastic descriptions of Victorian London as well as a really interesting tale of how Dickens career took off. I think it’s by someone called Stephen Jarvis
Your voicework is getting better and it was already great to begin with!
Great that you enjoy listening to the stories. Thank you.
His narration has become part of the historical fabric, as if you’re traveling 🧭 back in time. Excellent 👏🏼🎬
It seems to have always been the case that the poorer you are, the harder you have to physically work, for the lowest of low wages. It’s still universal today.
Yes... NEVER get poor!
Fact Feast -- I'm in absolute love with your channel. The way that you can describe every single detail, we can easily see the poverty, hear the despair in the voices of the poor families, and smell the horrid scents. Not too many authors can do that, but you can do that with ease. You take us on a journey to the periods of time, and we love it. This is what makes you above other channels that upload the same content.
Please keep up the phenomenal work!! Stay safe and aware of your surroundings, take care of yourselves and those around you, and God bless all of you, and your loved ones.
Thank you for your kind wishes. We aim to set an atmosphere in story telling so it’s really nice to read that this works for you. Thanks very much for taking the time to comment.
This is such a good, entertaining, educational channel. You deserve a lot more recognition than you have!
Comments like this give me motivation to keep going, so thank you! It's nice to make content viewers enjoy watching.
Excellent work.
Excellent thanks.🇬🇧
A pleasure 🙂
Another great video!
The book "guignol's band" by the french author Céline describes the pimping smuggling etc of London... though set in 1916 , it reflects the same scenery...
I was especially struck by the observation about flowers... in his book Céline describes how a sudden ray of sunlight could suddenly make the meagre window-ledge gardens brighten a whole street... and he recalls (book written during nazi occupation of france) the ragged children who, despite their bare feet and empty stomach would sing and shout and scatter or gather like flocks of sparrows... and he even quotes some of their singsong verses (he was a medical student and probably 1:2 doctor in what i think is the closed hospital in Hackney Road...)
If you have time to spare, i recommend Céline's "guignol's band" and "London Bridge (the part 2 of guignol'x band)
Keep up the great good work!
And maybe you could tell us what happened and how did happen that The Dole suddenly sprouted, and its history (up to the Means Test of the 30's?)
People (like me)
need to know
Thanks for your ceaseless toil!
This sounds very interesting and most descriptive! Thanks for taking the time to share. I'll see if I can check it out. And many thanks for your support for my channel.
I want to know more. I am actually googling 'Guignol's Band' right now lol... Thank you!!
@@FactFeast you're welcome!

Thanks for the suggestion ❤😊
I could listen to you day and night . You're a historical treasure .

Hey! I'm ready to unwind with my fave UA-camr! I love history and you have made me more obsessed 😍.
Hope you enjoy it! Whitechapel has a rich history - it's inhabitants, unfortunately, didn't live rich lives.
And here we are 2022 and still countries have far to many homeless..... Unbelievable!
Hiya Pixi, I cant believe there are thousands on the streets and the councils are blowing up Tower Blocks of flats (or apartments) these people can be homed in them
This is one of my favourite channels. Excellent work.
Happy to hear that! Thanks for being a regular viewer.
Just found your channel. Subbed immediately. Love this era and these stories.
Welcome to the channel! I’m glad you enjoy the history 🙂
What a difference between this period of time and today Whitechapel is a prosperous area where you can't find a decent house for less than a million pounds.
Same in Glasgow. Places that were previously areas of high deprivation, are increasingly subject to gentrification since the start of the 2010s.
So thankful to be alive and where I am. 🙏
Thank you so much for uploading this video. It is helping me get through the pandemic!
Fascinating, but scary.
Thanks Fact Feast You Rock!🤘❤️
😀 Thanks for checking out the video. There really are a lot of stories from Whitechapel. It’s steeped in Victorian history.
@@FactFeast It's so interesting & Thanks for all your hard work!😁
My family were lucky to escape Jacob's Isle, where Bill Sykes was killed in Oliver Twist.
The London Hospital, is on The Whitechapel Road, I've worked there a fair few times over the years.
The Blind Beggar is the nearest pub if you leave out of the front door.
And supposedly where The Kray Brothers shot Jack "The Hat" McVitie.
Jacob's Island was notorious and has an interesting story to tell.
This is the result of trickle down economics
Victorian style
slavery more like.
Good channel 👍 I like stories about slums tenement houses and 1800s Good job !!!
Thanks very much! I have lots more stories from slums on my channel should you be interested.
Well that was an eye opener 😮
History unvarnished.
How very, very sad. The poorest of the poor. Having grown up poor, white, small farming community in North America poor, we at least had a garden and mom & I could sew. Dad was a farm hand, winter was oatmeal, potatoes and eggs as well as anything we could bake. Everything was clean n scrubbed, as though we had 5 kids and poorly educated parents, we didn't exactly starve and we were clean with a small sense of well being as others weren't as lucky as we were, though a greater number in town had things much better off. I can't imagine Whitechapel, own nothing, scrape to live, freeze and can't change the filth. No one able to help another much, and not mattering at all to the wealthy or powers that be to change the mechanics of this area.
Thank you for sharing this interesting story of your past.
My grandparents grew up there in the 1940s in tenement blocks with public baths, so my great grandparents were both there in the early 1900s, My nans mum had 9kids my grandads dad went to jail for tax evasion! Bill chipchase ❤ but you know it wasn't all doom and gloom. Obviously life was hard but people still looked out for each other and had community. I like this but it's very sort of bleak and kind of a bit anti working class like it doesn't explain the pride of how clean people kept their homes and the pride of dressing so snappy and smart despite the poverty saving up for a Saville row suit 😊 xx
1888, My ancestor James Hardiman b1859 lived with his mother Harriet b1839 on 29 Hanbury street, Hardiman was a cats meat seller and him and his mother occupied a ground room floor on 29 Hanbury street. His wife Sarah and Daughter Harriett had died from nerve damage in that year. He eventually died on 22nd December 1891 from Tuberculosis at the age of 32. RIP James
2022 is history repeating itself. With the help of Liz un(truss worthy)
Great Channel my friend and very well done.
Thank you very much!
I like your voice its really good for the vlogs you post, its very educational learning about the East end of London around where Jack The Ripper once prowled the streets, I really like your channel, did every town in United Kingdom have a workhouse? has anybody bought the book called Spitalfields nippers by Horace Warner its well worth the read, this is Choppy in Whitehaven, Cumbria, England
Welcome to the channel. Many towns, even small ones, had a workhouse/poor house. Great to know you enjoy the history, thank you.
Thanks for the vid!
Likewise for watching and your comment 🙂
How are you doing sir thank you for your wonderful cultural documentary channel although it’s really misery very painful memories especially for poor people low class in Victorian age . As always iam gathering main information about topics you mentioned briefly here first of all whitechapel district definition it’s area named after early 14th century st Mary matfelon Church popularly known as st Mary whitechapel originally created in 1270 as chapel of East dunstan stepney Church was rebuilt in 1329 . Today whitechapel is very different place buzzy , multicultural creative and Jewish community established by refugees who arrived in 1870 to work in rag trade they moved to suburbans and began have taken their place . This district whitechapel was characteristed by extreme poverty, substandard housing poor sanitation , homelessness, drunkenness and endemically prostitution these factors were focused in institutions of common lodging houses within whitechapel which about 8500 people highly basis .
Whitechapel really was home to poverty and well-known for crime. I suppose it’s this character that makes the distinct live long in our minds, with the stories and movies that are still told today.
I would very much like to know the source material for this most informative and well illustrated video.
The sources are literally in each video! The author's names, sometimes photo if possible and book and newspaper titles. This one's at 1:05.....
Hard to believe, so ghastly.
To think these people fought and died for king and country. Before I go any further, I want to lay blame at the door of royality. They we're the worst culprits of starving their own people. In their hundreds of thousands they died of starvation in England, in their millions in Ireland they starved us.
Yes these people lived terrible lives. To many drank thus taking food out their children's mouths Prince Albert tried to better people's lives. He died to young but he did worry about them. Queen Victoria didn't really know what was going on. Once he died, she didn't care about anything. To many children didn't help them.
Truth
Truth. Royals doing nothing for the peasant since....
@@gladtownghost not..it's not accurate history..but..these days liberals are good at evil spewing nonsense
Royalty did nothing about it; ergo complicit, parliament, the bourgeoisie, the landed gentry, the elite of society, East India Company, the judiciary, the profiteers... Antiquated ideology... (mostly Georgian ideology) That is where the blame lays...
New sub. Very interesting content
Welcome to the channel! It's great to read that you enjoy the content. Thank you and I hope you enjoy what's here for you.
@@FactFeast yeah bud cheers
Been intrigued by all that
Want on in this notorious
City since watching
The tv series Whitechapel
People of today need to really appreciate the struggles their ancestors had to suffer so that we could enjoy life today. And in some cases, some still struggle the nearly the same today.
👍👍👍👍👍
Charles Dicken's Bleek House
Very bleak.
These people had absolutely no common sense when it came to birth control. If I am hungry and poor, having one child after the other is absolutely foolish.
What? They didn't have much choice in many cases.
Its like that today too.. in the future, if there is a future, they will be describing my cohorts and I in this manner.

Elites are working towards this. See green agenda, etc investigative journalist, Whitney Webb
Parts of London are still a slum
I think they had so many kids in those days in the hope that some might survive the poverty and disease.
Also contraception may have been a problem?
Yes, more children meant more people to contribute to the family budget for food and rent. Thank you for your comment.
@@FactFeast I understand that way of thinking somewhat, but this makes more mouths to feed in the first place. I believe they had so many children because well, there was no birth control and finding comfort from each other was one of the only respites from daily misery.
No available, reliable, safe or considered "moral" 🙄 birth control. When I still have doctors refuse to prescribe emergency contraception or ask their colleagues to refer patients for terminations in 2022, I dread to think what women faced even mid-1900s when contraception became increasingly available.
*refusing due to their religious beliefs 🤦♀️ Typed too quickly 😂
Always there will be people who keep having kids they can't properly care for
Last part of my research housing at whitechapel was terrible rows of terraced houses were built to accommodate massive influx workers to factories . There are no sanitation and sewage ran openly through overcrowded streets. I forget name of whitechapel because there are two streets same name whitechapel street and white chapel road both streets are named for chapel was destroyed during blitz in London world war 11. There are very famous serial killer called jack ripper he killed five women all prostituties there are eleven separate murders from 1888 to 1891 known at police services white chapel murders crimes at whitechapel district linked to poverty, unemployment but really jack ripper was very cruel he took his victims body parts in case of Catherine edd he took her kidney . There are around 1200 prostitutes were sell themselves for little money three pence or just loaf of bread . Jack ripper was polish immigrant named too Aaron kosminski called leather apron , white chapel murder his motive sexual sadism he never caught because murder was uncommon during reign of Queen Victoria and jack ripper was young man aged 23 years old whose collected murders body parts from Thames River he became killer because he saw murder of his son and he suffered from sociopath and personality disorder. We appreciate your great efforts as foreigners subscribers as overseas students want to increase our cultural level improve our English language as well stay safe blessed good luck to you your family friends.
Thank you for your interesting comment. It’s nice to know you find the topic interesting. The identity of Jack the Ripper is, as far as I know, still disputed.
I lived there during my time at barts and the london
There are still 19th Century buildings around Whitechapel and Spitalfields.
@@FactFeast you can find 18th and 17th around there if you know the right guy. 😉
Unfortunately I lost his number.
This really isn’t all that long ago. I have vivid memories of my grandparents telling me about their parents. These were people born in the East End and growing up during these times!
Charity was and still is a HUGE part of Jewish culture. Modern notable ones (most of which began in the East End at this time), are Norwood (helping kids and young people with additional needs), Jewish Care (mostly care homes etc.), World Jewish Relief (a humanitarian organisation), Gift (food banks etc. for the needy). To name but a few.
Also, cleanliness of the physical body and of food preparation etc. goes back to the basics of the religion!
Really interesting and thank you for sharing.
I always wondered how the hell I managed to exist since all my family line heads were in America by 1700.
Now it all becomes so clear. We had Indiana to give us maize and deer.
I'm 23% English/ European. 18% Scottish. 14% Norwegian. 14% German. 14% Irish. 12% Swedish/Danish. 5% Welsh.
So you are broadly from north Atlantic stock.
they had to cook soup in the same pot that they pooped in!! was very terrible indeed!!
The Tories would have you back to that time.....
1:36 Terrible conditions in Whitechapel and if you wanted to escape the horrid conditions by immigrating to America…Perfect, you’d be just in time to fight in their civil war! Talk about a rock and a hard place! The poor just couldn’t and weren’t given a break!
I don’t have any propensity towards crime but faced with such hopelessness, terrible treatment by the upper class and police a life of crime, even I must admit would have been a serious temptation!
It's still a den of the wicked to this day.
Nothing like Victorian London in the morning to stop whining about my life.
I only know that Whitechapel is so brutal that a metal band named themselves after it
Notorious
Many many third world countries are living like this today.... Not much different then hos life was in White Chapel for 200-250 y ago, let us not forget that😢, thanks for the Upload-I enjoy your vidoes with your out of this world like voice who makes me feel like I am there🤪thank you 👌watching from Norway 💫
Thanks very much! Great to know you think the narration fits the atmosphere of Victorian London.
My greatgrandmother wasw born in 1885 and when her young father died her older brother and her mother ended up in the local workhouse. I found a later census where it stated that her brother George was working in the local dockyard at 18 years odl. My great grandmother married in the early 1900s and had 16 kids all which lived, They lived in 2 houses and in 1938 for some reason she was in the newspapers as the Duke of York or Edninburgh paid them a visit as they were the first bi racial family to live in the area in Kent. I don´t know how they could afford to rent 2 houses at the time as my great grandfather only worked as a cement labourer or sometimes a coalman, I think her father was from the East End of London so I suppose they must have been typical working class cockneys.
That's quite a story - 16 children surviving to adulthood at that time in history. Thanks for sharing!
does anything matter>?
Now the theives are polititians and banksters 😮😊
Why did they have kids? 🤔
There was no birth control and it was illegal if there was!
For many reasons, poor people had large families that could contribute money to the whole family when children could go to work. Also religion, the church encouraged people to have children, then no education and lack of birth control. Remember this was the Victorian times and many children were born into poverty and people really had no opportunities or choice for a better lot in life.
No means of protection back in the day and men can't help themselves.
oh the HORROR... of an abomination of a synthetic voice
At least someone tried to help!🥲 This is a story of poverty stricken people doing what they have to to stay alive.
Yes, often left few choices in life.
