I'm glad you used my idea ... Yes they go faster when you get used of it..... I thread mine down the conduit first then attach the bottom like you did........... Yes oiling the conduit is a lot better for threading the wire ........... You taught me something with riveting the holder on the handle..... Something so easy.....

Worked out pretty well. I had the wrong gauge wire 1/16" or 16 gauge is plenty strong to do the trick. Thanks again for the tip. Bob
I do the same thing, but I use the smallest braided cable you can get at Lowes. It's around 35 cents a foot and I generally buy 25 to 30 feet at a time. That will do probably 6 to 8 mowers. It is almost exactly like the cable that comes with the mower. The only other difference is I apply some grease to the cable before feeding it back through the plastic piece. Makes it smooth as can be.
I started flipping lawnmower for fun. Love the idea, my 13 year old son installed a simple switch to the magneto wire and ground bolt. Works good, but going to try your idea. Thanks!
Great fix, love the mechanics wire and plan to start using this on future broken cable fixes vs. what I had been doing previously with zip ties. Thanks for sharing!
I do the same but use bike brake cables they work great. Great idea with the rivets.
This was great. Took me 2 minutes to fix mine. I only had 20 gauge wire so it slipped through easily. I know it will probably break but I can now finish my yard without having to wait on parts or a repair shop. Thank you for posting this 🍻
Great idea - this helped me work through a good temporary fix vs. buying a cable - thanks for sharing!

hey i buy braided wire at Home Depot , In the garage door department ,, it's used for the outside door handle ,, it's the same as what was on the lawn mower only in a roll ..

Just wanted to let you know this came in super handy the other day, I was doing a John deere js60, and the cable is a jd exclusive, and since it's jd 110 dollars, and couldn't find a cheaper one on ebay, so I did this trick, and it worked perfectly, thanks again.
Great idea! One way I keep mine mower cable lubricated (I don't have a cable oiler) is to put one end of the cable in my shop vac hose and pack it off with a rag or two then use the negative vacuum pressure to pull the oil through the cable. Thanks Bob!!
Nice hack, I think I'll try it for my broken self propel cable, appreciate the video.
Lol... my cable broke.... 50 dollars to buy one. Saw this video and replaced it for a whole 4 dollars and 72 cents. Lol luv it
The binder clips are a great idea. I have been trying to think of a way to get around having problems finding the right length cables..
Thank you so much. My grandson gets to have an awesome birthday in a nice cut yard now. Off to Lowes for wires and clamps. 🌹
Thank you sir for the advice in the video. I was able to fix my mower with what I had at home.
Great fix Bob 👍 I'll have to give it a try
Absolutely love that pop rivet idea.
The rivets were a game-changer... Thank you!!!
Great tip, thanks! I have used break cables from discarded bikes & took some time to make ends using solder. But this method is much less time consuming. Using cherry / pop rivets also a good strong fix. Stay well Joe Z
I need information on how repair drive cable not throttle can leave
Nice fix and low cost. Thanks
Like your fix. When I do a repair, I expect it to be an improvement over the OEM part which failed or it's not worth my time. This satisfies on 2 criteria: provide better service and more cost effective than a replacement part. Plus the added benefit of being immediate; no ordering / waiting, etc.I'll try this next time. I've soldered the cable which requires I cut out a section of the outer sheath then repair the sheath and used a u-clamp to reattach the failed plastic bracket.
the rivet deal was a great idea!
My wife is not happy with you when my amazon list grows lol. Thanks for sharing.
thanks DW ... have a good weekend .. †
thanks, I will fix mine today.
Great video man I like the way you present the information clearly and it makes sense. I tried your link for the rivet gun and it took me to the crappy rivet gun I need to replace lol. Definitely not the same as yours so if you have a minute maybe update the link or let us know what brand/ model it is. Thanks.
What about dripping some oil into the cable casing before inserting the new cable. From both sides, hang it in the shape of a U and let it sit for a while.
great tip thanks again
Very informative. My cable just broke yesterday.
I think I may have mentioed my method before in the comments. I use the crimp you used and a scrap cable z bend and crimp them together on the broken end. That way you only have to repair one end. Only could hold the pieces together if I crush the crimp in a vice however.
I have used a lot of that wire but never for the inside cable of the plastic conduit. I will give it a go. For us here in western Canada it is a long wait to get the cables in the mail from an on line order. Also they are double what you pay just because we are in Canada. Thanks again Bob.
Yup for the price of 3 cables you might as well get 500' of 16 gauge and use it when you can. If you make a video on the same topic I will keep my eye open for it. Take care. Bob
@@doublewide6 Thanks. I have tried to make the Z bends out of solder with some success.
Non'c Bruce...... Do you know anyone in your area that has cattle on their land ???? They should have some electric fence wire...... it's 17 gauge and fits perfect in the conduit......

@@Budro4764 Well Alberta Beef is famous around the world. I know i can get some. Thanks
Yes get you a short length of it say 25 feet or so and try it..... If you like it then order you some or that other vinyl stuff Bob Mentioned .....
Plus Tard Non'c Bruce .................
Nice fix
Never mind I already made my decision couldn’t wait
Nice fix Bob
I started flipping lawnmowers and this trick will give me a little extra in my pocket compared to a new cable. While were talking safety brakes I have a mower that the brake spring just seems impossible for the cable to stretch it enough for the switch to work. Is there a way to use a little weaker spring or adjust the spring cable? I'm not even sure if it's the proper spring but it looks right?? Thanks for the great lessons especially the rivet trick
Yeah I like the fix. I always take the cables off any scrap mowers but I may pay to get 20 feet of it in as a work around. Good tip.
Bob shoot me a link to that stuff... I want to check it out ......
Thanks Mon Ami...........
thats a good tip, i see a lot of them broke with the handle duct taped :) i also wanted to say (im sure you thought about it afterwards) when the cable housing was hanging down loose thats when you shoulda pushed the wire through, i do a lot of bicycle cables and as flexible as they are even they can be hard to push through when the housing isnt straight or close to it. and the oil tip is good too long as its weather resistant.
Great fix
Take the cable end off the brake, instal wire from top down. Then secure to the lever. But no matter, the safety wire will break at at the twist or where it fits through the hole on either end. Try small wire rope with a thimble at each end. But at that point, just buy a new cable.
This quick fix will get you running till a proper repair can be made.
Good tip.
PS, your fuel line puller has saved me a hell of a lot of time. You might want to present it again.
Jim
I ordered the proper cable and some clips, I am still experimenting with this method. I will make a follow up video.
Hey double wide 6 which lift table is that? The 500 or 1000! Thanks! Nice tip on cable fix! I do a lot with rivets too.
Thanks I may try this , sometimes those cables can be a little of a pain to find .
Great stuff
Thank you!!!
Good job bro
Hey double how do you remove piston and rings on a Briggs and stratton walk behind trimmer?
Nice fix DW6. BTY, how's that lift you installed on your pickup working out? Have a great, and hopefully warmer, weekend, lol. 👍
Lift is good I used it once this week and had no issues. I am still screwing around with adding reverse lights and my back up camera.
Where did you get that foot pump hydraulic lift for the mower? That's an awesome thing to have if working on alot of mowers.
Nice..
were do i get the cabel from my cable has broke and I cant find nowere to get a new one its a handy mower model with a briggs and stratton engine
Hey Bro what kind of cart or Bench or lift is it that you have your mower up on I need something like that to work on my stuff got a bad back and the leaning over bugs me. Thanks
I'm all in on that, quick & cheaper. ✔
I have this mower and on the rear wheels the 9/16 nut has stripped the threads on the shoulder bolt in the wheel. Any tool that can get that nut off that's spinning and won't let you take off wheel? No one has video doing this....
Yup - you sold me!
Hey bud where can I buy cable sheath or cover and mechanics wire?
Anyone know a good place to buy the cable conduit (black housing tube) that the cable goes into?
Yes
People throw away good lawn mowers all the time for the silliest reasons. I find old lawn mowers on the curb all the time that just need a little attention and can be fixed easily and put back into service.
Smart !
You can use a hose clamp when the nub is broken
Attach hose clamp.just like on a hose
Hi, am hoping you can answer me this. I have a Snapper 82v push mower. All of a sudden, both the main motor doesn't start, as well as the self propelled motor. When I try starting it, all I hear are three beeps from the battery. In your opinion, would the cable replacement you outlined here resolve my current issue?
I think I got the hd wire from stens or Propart direct
That will last you maybe what 15 pulls if that? I just bought 2 of those cables for $13.18. A new cable will last a lot longer, and take less time to install.
Sir, that is an awesome idea, you should do a follow up to see if it streches..... Ordered.... Tks again..... I shared this with a couple fellow youtubers, hope you don't mind, it's a great idea, who told you about this?
@knighthawk86855 I told him about it in a video he did not long ago..... It works well and I have no issues with it..... If it would break in 4 to 5 years then just put another piece of wire in the conduit again it only costs a few pennies ... I have a lot of mowers come in my shop with broken factory cables that are 3 to 4 years old..... Spray some PB Blast in the conduit or WD 40 and it will last .... Both cables will last if you spray it once or twice a year......
Plus Tard Mon Ami .............
My little two cents worth here... If you don't have pop rivets, electrical tape and zip ties will hold the cable on top. I think I would have doubled the loops on both ends too. But this works anyway.
I think it’s better to put a cable upper the handlebar, before riveting that plastic holder, because if you need to fold a handle the cable will not let it fold
The baling wire will bend bacm znd forth till it breaks, For a permanent fix you need braide wire otherwise a good video .
Crimp the end Z,s of old cables to the wire
I like your stone grip handwork of the rivet gun dropping to the floor. Also, you should have pushed the wire through the top part of the bale handle and made sure you did not nick the wire as much as you did. This will cause the cable to stick and jam then break again. Think first and then make happen. Otherwise you did a quick fix to get the mower working. So good job fella and good day too.
That’s the way I fix them most of the time, unless they won’t new one
interesting trick...i saw another video the guy cut the ends off and used those clips and attacched them so you still have the ends on each side
this way seems like it might be stronger sinc eits all one piece rather than 3 but depends on the clips i guess
Lawnmower cables have such a design flaw, water travels down the cable into the sheath and sits there til it rusts and breaks, the solid wire will probably hold up better, I lube the cables to combat the problem.
I think the braided wire is rated stronger. Anyhow you can get braided cable sealed in nylon that won't rust and slides easy. I ordered 500' for about $40. from amazon.
Braided wire is better becasue it will not fatigue so quickly. It is the bending that causes the wire to weaken and eventually break. Water getting in there and causing rust is a factor as well.
Mine broke, just wired the thing open, put a kill switch on it.
Good in a pinch, but don't see a long lasting repair with wire vs cable.
So now, to remove the carburetor...
He said : he does it all the time because, it never works.
Bike brake cable works better
Should last a week.
Gorila tape the bracket and forget about it ,i refuse to order cables i repair them myself ,not worth the time to order ,they should sale cables in store to buy.
