      Movie magic. And just like watching a movie, even knowing some behind-the-scenes info does not take away from the enjoyment of the performance. I was wondering how did she get them to all fall so perfectly. She's human. What blows me away was the DNA strand. The attention to detail getting them to line up is just amazing. The question I have for her is how do you design them? Computer program? Hand-drawn images? Ok, 2 questions: Is this your project house? Or do you live elsewhere in the building? I imagine nobody is doing any sort of jumping jacks exercises.

    Honestly, I did not notice the fails in the main video, even though I watched it multiple times-the editing was perfect and worked really well. And besides, most of the project did work out, and even if the fails hadn't been edited out, the video still would have looked awesome. One thing that I thought was really cool though was that when your setup failed multiple times, you didn't just give up on the video; instead, you found ways to make it work out and later made a video using those mistakes as a learning experience for all of us (I know I probably would have given up if something like that had happened to me). Thank you for your amazing content!

      Hey that's great that you didn't notice the fails at first! Glad to hear that my editing is working well!
      Yes, never give up! Perseverance is key with dominoes. That and creative problem solving, whether that's through editing, building, or embellishing the fails and pointing them out for "content" are all great ways to get around fails. Thanks for your feedback!

    WHAAAAT?! I honestly thought it worked perfectly! Maybe it’s just you’re good at covering up fails!

  • @StickTrickDominoDude

    Even though this massively complex setup had a full stop 5 times, the lesson that I take from this isn't that the complex nature of the project is the problem, because after all most of the ideas and connections worked.
    The first two fails with the bridge and the untapped fieldstarter as you said were user error, and could have easily worked had the right precautions been executed. It's not based on the ideas themselves since the fails were very preventable. But as you said, it was built very late at night so I don't blame you for that haha.
    With the swinging ball trigger...yeah I would never have included that in the first place. It was a little too ambitious. It's very similar to the grape swinging technique from the Lemonade Machine which as we know, failed multiple times due to wear and tear. And if it's unreliable in a rube goldberg machine, it can't be considered reliable in a domino setup, that's for sure.
    The wall failing under the class table is the most fascinating to me. Definitely something to take note of for the future.
    And finally...that's just unfortunate. I know it's happened before to other people, but the residue on the floor in a specific area just sucks. There's no telling when it will happen or where it will happen so there's nothing to learn from that fail, unless you decide to mop the floor before every project.
    Still I hope you're proud of yourself! All the main projects worked, it was just the transitions where it got iffy so there's no reason to not try a project like this again! Makes me want to try something like this now that my drummer of a brother is going to college in a couple weeks.

    • @H5dominocommunity
      @H5dominocommunity  4 роки тому +5

      Yeah most of these fails I feel like "don't really count" haha. Some were just flukes, or bad error on my part. I agree, the ball swing trick was a little too ambitious. I guess I was feeling very optimistic as I was building. Something I'll remember for the future is to be optimistic, but not TOO optimistic. I'm still proud of myself - all the ideas worked as you said! Nothing fell backwards or early... it was as planned!

    • @Alex_Off-Beat
      @Alex_Off-Beat 2 роки тому

      @@H5dominocommunity I think the swinging ball trick would work if you had it swinging from a rod instead of a string, that way it can't stretch or swing anywhere except into the target.

    Lily hevesh you are absolutely amazing.
    The only one that I was truly suspicious of was the trigger after the gold to yellow structure, but even then, the flow of the setup wasn't broken with that edit, or any of the edits for that matter. I truly feel like you built the project in a way that no matter how poorly the falldown could go, it would not have a negative impact on the quality of the video. And I completely agree with 13:50 - it's not as much about how well the setup works and more about the intention behind it, and I think that your intentions and viewpoints when building the project were outstanding. Freestyle Lily Hevesh setups are literally the best thing :D

    Working on projects like these are always a learning experience, everyone is still learning about how dominoes work. I remember when I was working on my Dominoes Everywhere project, I made multiple mistakes when building, mainly because I didn't really know how to build a project like that. It was definitely a learning experience for me. There were multiple fails that I never thought would happen, but i learned a lot. I learned how to properly tape the zipper/tape trick properly and multiple other things. My point is, is that we are all still learning and that every project we do could have a fail. If a fail happens, you figure out why it failed and you learn how to make that trick work more reliably when you do it again.
    Amazing project Lily and even thought that it had some fails, it's still my favorite project you have built. So many unique tricks all put together to make an amazing setup and a great color scheme.

    I'm finally getting around to watching the extras...
    4:46 - I was a little surprised there was more.
    The only one I thought and stuck out as something not right was the yellow structure in the kitchen, the angle change wasn't needed there and was sudden.
    I remember thinking the fainter things might have gone wrong, but that was because it was the first camera change. Since it made sense to get to the other room though I figured that was the reason instead.
    In this video the topple starts at 2:15, comes to a stop at 3:19.
    Toppling for about 1min 4 sec.
    My original joking guess on Twitter: 1min 14sec
    So technically I was only 10 sec off? 🤣
    Breaks are more of an issue if it's for an audience/live fall IMO.
    The only 'ugh' moment in this amazing setup was the wall under the table not working out.

    When I first started watching dominoes videos, I disliked the illusion created by editing out fails. It kind of felt like cheating. But as I started building myself I realized how often dominoes fail, and that a fail in a setup doesn’t necessarily wreck a project. Today I admire the skill it takes to make a flawed project look flawless. I enjoyed learning in this video not only where and why your project failed, but what steps you took to recover. It was fun to go back to the original and pay attention to the parts that failed.

    • @k.c1126
      @k.c1126 4 роки тому

      I don't enjoy the fails. I think there's a difference between the final product, which is "the show" if you are on the stage, and the unedited video, which is like a dress rehearsal.
      Having seen this video, I think I'll have a greater appreciation for "fail videos" from now on.

    • @StayFawnTop
      @StayFawnTop 4 роки тому

      K. C Yeah, I agree there’s a difference between the final product and the unedited video. Videography is an important part of domino art. So I’d say that over time my perspective has changed to where I don’t need the fall itself to be flawless, but instead appreciate the final product for the image and effect it creates.

    • @H5dominocommunity
      @H5dominocommunity  4 роки тому +1

      "Today I admire the skill it takes to make a flawed project look flawless." - That is a great change in mindset that I think a lot of people would never grow to accept. Learning how to edit a domino video (and hide breaks if necessary) is truly an art in itself. The way you showcase a domino project can completely change the way people experience the topple. I'm glad to hear that someone else can understand and appreciate this point of view.

  • @Aronstorme

    You could try making backup lines that ensure that next sections are toppled if the section before stops. They used this extensively in the Netherlands and broke the world record almost every year (millions of dominoes)

    More effort went into hiding the fails than building the actual setup :) I love the fact that your are honest about what actually happened and I liked this video more than the original one.
    But I disagree about fails/fullstops.
    Fails ruins your satisfaction as a domino maker, and that's why they suck. They also make the whole art of domino making that much more interesting, because a flawless big setup is such a hard feat to accomplish.
    I will never put to much effort into hiding fails and a ton of effort into mastering the art of not having fails, because it matters that *I* think my setup is great, and I cannot lie to myself about that.

    • @H5dominocommunity
      @H5dominocommunity  4 роки тому

      Editing the falldown only took a day so it wasn't bad. Fails make good content, honestly xD I appreciate your contrasting viewpoint about fails/fullstops. Some people have a higher tolerance for breaks, and I totally respect that. For certain projects, my tolerance for breaks can be much higher or lower - for example, at a live event I'll make sure that it will work all the way through no matter what - but in this case, for a personal project where I didn't want to limit my creativity, I was willing to be a bit more lenient with it working all the way through. I definitely could have put more backup lines at certain points, but I decided to take the risk and not include them (I think things look better without backup lines anyway).

    • @citiblocsMaster
      @citiblocsMaster 4 роки тому

      @@H5dominocommunity I'm all for taking risks. I think it's by taking continuous risks that one improves over time. Analysing and understanding those failed is a valuable learning experience. In my mind the most impressive setup is one where calculated risks are made (I think Kyle is a master at that) and it still works.

    Potential tinder date: so what do you do for a living?
    Hevish: I play with dominoes
    PTD: yeah right, nobody will pay you to play with Dominos.
    Hevish: well, my last play session took 80+ days to set up and involved 32,000 dominoes. Millions of people watch it and get joy from my efforts.
    PTD: will you marry me?
    Hevish: No, but I'll build you up and knock you down if you like 😉

    • @H5dominocommunity

      By the way, is there a way I can contact you? I'm developing a unique new project related to dominoes but need a little help from some older builders who have been part of the UA-cam domino community since the early days - I think you'd be a perfect fit since you're a long time builder and know so much about dominoes! If you're interested in hearing more, send me an email at H5dominocommunity@gmail.com and I can tell you about the whole project. I hope you're doing well, Anno!
