  • Commemorative Air Force A-26 pilot Steve Swift takes us on a detailed tour of the A-26 "Night Mission" . This A-26 has a colorful history. We are glad it is in the very capable hands of the CAF to help ensure it to be flying for many years to come.

Thanks for sharing. My father flew combat in the Invader as a navigator/bombardier in the 8th Bombardment Group in Korea. His squadron had this color scheme (yellow nacelles and wing and tail tips) and he flew mostly the glass nose version and rode up front. We have a yellow baseball cap with about 52 felt bombs on the brim representing his missions. We also have a yearbook that he received that shows his deployment as July - December 1952 and shows his squadron as L-N-I (don't know what that stands for). I wish he could see this video as I'm sure it would bring back lots of memories. He passed away in 2016 at the age of 91.

I'm on another walk around binge😂 I think I've seen all of these at least 3 times. I can listen to pilots talk about their airplanes endlessly😂

I've always imagined those "heritage flights" to be exactly that... One plane flat out, the other barely controlled.

8 .50 cal guns? That's an aircraft you do not want angry with you. The lower door design seems counterintuitive; If someone manages to get it unlocked in flight you've got a massive speedbrake you can't retract. (But what do I know? I just fix stuff, preferably, before it breaks.) Awesome plane, interesting history, interesting mods.

Actually there are 16 now. She has 8 in the nose, 3 in each wing, and 2 in the top turrent... but no bottom turrent installed which was 2 more. Other arrangements were available. The barrels are ABS plastic pipe to simulate the M2.

The A26B could have 18 forward firing 50 cal. Quite the strafer in salvo. But they were empty in seconds.

Stephen....That would have been out of Nakon Phenom Thailand, just west of the Mekong River and flew mainly interdiction missions to destroy trucks coming down the Ho Chi Min Trails though Laos... primarily Mu Ghia and Bankari Passes. it was an ominous airplane with amazing capabilities and even more amazing Pilots....your Father had brass ones.

This plane is in very sad shape. It wouldnt surprise me to see this plane crash due to lack of maintenance done to it. Upkeep looks like they havent done any work on this plane i decades. This plane needs to be sent to a rework shop, stripped down, every rivet and screw removed, and put back together from scratch. At this rate, this plane wont last more than another 1-2 yrs I'd say before the plane and crew die. I used to work on aircraft as a structural mechanic, and I can tell you, whoever does maintenance on this plane should be fired, and the person who inspects it for air worthiness, should have their license revoked.

Really? Ever worked on a WW2 A/C? Looks like that after about 30 min of flying! These planes are HEAVILY inspected by the FAA just for the fact they are antique but still fly like they did when they were new!
