- This is the theme to The World at War, which is a 26-episode television documentary series on World War II and the events leading up to and immediately following it. It was produced by Jeremy Isaacs, narrated by Laurence Olivier and its score composed by Carl Davis. A book, The World at War, was written by Mark Arnold-Forster to accompany it.
It is often considered to be the definitive television history of the Second World War. Some consider it the finest example of the documentary form. It also presented rare colour film footage of some of the war's events
I have watched this documentary since I was a child of 9 or so.It has captivated me,haunted me,terrified me,since then(I'm 47).It is the greatest documentary on any subject in history, truly an astonishing accomplishment.
Agreed. One of the finest documentary series ever made.
great series, always watch the whole thing when it is repeated on tv.very educational for the kids to see what happened.
I find the opening sequence to this programme haunting. The part where the photo of the Jewish boy burns and the tone of the music drops on the final note. Chilling.
another superb example of british documentries well done mr issacs
At 2:02 sounds like a Shostakovitch symphony.
Great theme song. Hair rising in its emotional content,
A great theme for a great series
This version of the World at War theme was arranged/conducted by Tony Hatch.
yeah watched this in 60s aged about 9 onwards, even then it was engrossing 😊
A great documentary with a great tune.
@evo5dave I think anzac2504 is referring to the music played in the very final scenes of the series. Those beautiful ethereal voices playing over the carved names, ages and photographs of the dead is one of the most powerful pieces of television I have ever seen. I think its the 'Kyrie' from the St Nicholas Mass by Haydn.
It's not Haydn. The music is an original score by Carl Davis. It was written specifically for The World at War.
As far as I know, the music was commissioned especially for the programme, I have only ever seen it listed as the theme from the world at war.
Beautiful music.
The music in question is taken from the St Nicholas Mass by Haydn but which piece I don't know? I only found this out by looking up about Oradour-sur-Glane, these series has haunted me since I was 11 but I am so glad that they made it, (series) because we should remember!
Thanks for posting this, cheers.
Haydn Missa Sancti Nicolai (Mass no. 6 in G major,
