  • Used cooking oil (also called waste vegetable oil) is a great biodiesel feedstock, but it's important to remember that the oil quality can affect the biodiesel production process. It's important to test the oil beforehand to see if the Free Fatty Acid (FFA) levels are too high, which can create soaps and emulsions. This video will walk you through an Acid Number Titration to test your waste oil. If the FFA level is between 3-5%, you probably want to pretreat the oil before turning it into biodiesel.

Hi, if the oil FFA is around 3-5%, how to pre-treat the oil? Thank you!

Hi I would like to know if it's possible to test solid fat (waste fat) with this method, I've tried with ethanol as solvent and 0.1 N KOH solution but the results have no sense %FFA seems to be more than 100% 😅, your advice would be really helpful. Greatings from Mexico :)

I don't know if ethanol is a good solvent for the job, but in general it is possible to determine the amount of FFA of solid fats. Of course you need to very carefully melt them beforehand as to not falsify the result.
