Is Holy Communion a Right?

  • Last week, we talked about Holy Communion being a gift and not a right owed to us by God. This may sound like the Church doesn’t want you if you’ve sinned, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. The reality is, every one of us is in need of repentance, and there is not one person on this earth who isn’t a sinner. What we need to examine within ourselves is how we can realign our souls back to God and enter a union with him in the Holy Sacrament.
Today, Fr. Mike clarifies some points he made in his last video about Holy Communion, and explains why the Church has always wanted your heart-especially in the midst of sin.

My friend told me a story once about when he was a younger man. He was in the habit of sleeping around with girls, cheating on girlfriends, trying to pick up girls at nightclubs etc and going to confession before Mass every Sunday so he could receive Holy Communion. One Sunday, he unknowingly went to a TLM parish and went to confession before Mass started. He confessed the same sins he was used to confessing. The Priest asked him if these sins were common for him and he admitted they were, so he refused to absolve him and told him to earnestly repent before trying to receive The Eucharist again. At first, my friend was very upset about what happened. It rocked him so hard that he actually stopped attending Mass for an entire year. Eventually, he realized the Priest was right for doing what he did. My friend started to take his faith seriously. He came back to the Church, changed his ways and became so knowledgeable about the faith that he actually sponsored me in my RCIA class. Denying Holy Communion to those that aren't living in unity with the teachings of the Church can be the most pastoral thing a Priest can do.

This! I'l be honest, I didn't know that people had these hang ups. About a month ago, I went for the blessing rather than the eucharist because I knew that there were a couple of things that I needed to confess before receiving. But I didn't feel embarrassed or as though others were judging me. A little awkward because the minister wasn't expecting it (he did a nice blessing though), but it was fine.

I actually called a local Catholic Church today and asked about tonight’s service. They have reconciliation before- but it’s been 20 years for me since my last. 😳 Catechism was not taught well. I feel like a baby in the Church learning what I am suppose to do.
Just going to go for a Blessing for me and my son tonight.

I encourage you brother that if you ask for an appointment at your local church they will give you a time to go for confession. God knows all our sins and he is never scandalized by us he only wishes to see us come closer to him and he wants to give you his body and blood especially. I know that if you go you will find such intense peace in your heart. I will pray for you and your son. We are all sinners brother but we don’t have to carry these burdens alone. God can lift those off your shoulders and make you a new man today! Peace! 🙏🏻

I sat in my car on a cold winter's night knowing I was going to go to my first confession in over 30 years. I heard Mother Angelica's words say 'just go to Confession'. After an hour of pouring my heart out and lots of tears, I felt like someone had just lifted a hundred pounds off me when the Priest laid his hand on my head and said "I absolve you of your sins".
You are like a baby LM being reborn again. When you do it, you will be overjoyed and filled with a sense of love you've never had before.
You could always phone the Priest and make arrangements to meet for confession at a specific time/day or tell him if you want to go before Mass. Often times, though, you'll need more time than the average and you don't want to be rushed through this first visit. You'll have a lot to cover and the Priest will guide you.
God love you LM...............it's going to be absolutely wonderful.
Then....go buy an ice cream cone to celebrate! God will be proud. xoxo

Maybe we need to hear more about living and how to live fuller lives.

I am orthodox and we need to fast (2 vegan meals per day) 3 days before communion and of course confess just before the mass and communion. When I was living with my boyfriend, I was also denied communion although I was fasting, praying and confessing. I accepted this because I knew my sin. There is no negotiation or compromise with receiving the Body and Blood of Jesus

The problem is that «orthodoxy» is vague, since the national churches are autophalous. Some allow divorce and remarrying. Many allow artificial contraception. I was even told that some allow abortion under some circumstances. No matter how much fasting one does, if you are divorced or have committed any of those acts, you can't receive communion in the Catholic church without confession, period.

For those who suffer with scrupulosity and mental disorders in conjunction with full disposal (or consumption) of the Holy Eucharist or feeling anxious of whether or not you are allowed to receive Communion without being in an objective state of mortal sin (there is some subjectivity and flexibility in these circumstances) trust in God’s mercy. For those who also struggle with finding and trusting the words of regular confessor, trust in God that what they will say is from Jesus Himself. This is not easy as I struggle with all the time. Know you are not alone.

Thank you, many forget or don't realize this makes some of us panic a great deal, when it should not.
Yep that is what I do too... The message from Fr. Mike is right... but Yes.. those of us with disorders... Trust in God... That is what I must do too. Especially with Confession being hard to find here.
I am praying to God constantly for forgiveness because I don't know what else to do. But I also read people saying how they feel weird if they accept when they shouldn't... I don't know about you, but I always feel warm, and like I can finally be calm once I receive communion. I think that is a silent sign. That is it ok. Plus we all know before all those other things no matter what his message might be the first thing Jesus says over and over is.. "I love you. I Love you."
Believe in That, and it will be Ok.
      God Bless!

That was before Lent, and since then, I’ve gone twice. In conjunction with actually reading the Bible and Catechism, I have never felt more alive and knowledgeable about THE Truth in my entire life. God is waiting for all of us. I pray that everyone comes back to Him; He loves us unfathomably and wants us to so badly. Father, as someone who hasn't been baptized or catechized yet, I love these videos. People criticize the church for being harsh or tyrannical with her rules, and yet we don't compel them through any form of force. We don't require conversion at the barrel of a gun, we don't extort people into obeying your dogma, we literally do nothing except try to convince people. That is the opposite of tyranny. If you don't follow the rules of Catholocism, fine, that's your choice... but that doesn't mean you get to have whatever you want. I would love to partake of Holy Communion, when I go to church there is NOTHING I want more than that (I confess, as much as I love God, I struggle with boredom in church), but I haven't done the basic tasks necessary to receive Holy Communion. You are quite literally doing the Lord's Work.

The thing is, Even Mr. Schmitz can't do, to deny someone the communion. We learn in the communion-lesson, that we are not supposed to NOT give someone the communion, eventhough we know that the person is in mortal sin. Actually we should do it as our lord says in the Bible, that we have to speak with the person and let him notice the sin, he made. If he doesn't listen, than we should bring support to convince him. If this does not work, than the whol community should be involved. And if he still does not listen, then he shall be excluded from the community.

Grandpa was so proud of my return in November 2019, and he was always often openly so proud of me in many aspects.
As I’m understanding things now, I still have so much farther to go, but at least I’m on the right path.

It is about being responsible, bearing responsibility for our actions and trusting God's divine mercy, if we do not trust God that God wants and is able to transform us and cleanse us from our sins, or worse if we can no longer see what is sinful in our lives because we do not trust the Church; we profane the Body and Blood of Christ which becomes a greater sin in itself.

Is it not also good to Believe and have Faith in God's Forgiveness when you Confess? God doesn't keep after. Once you confess its done. You are clean and able to move forward. You are not in that same sin after that.
I normally wouldn't say anything, its not my place. But isn't God's forgiveness stronger then that?
You should be fine to receive it after going to Confession. No?
People that come from other Faiths aren't always Married by the Church. Are they never to receive it either?
I think you should really talk to your Priest because I feel like you are missing out on something pretty big here. Jesus said to come and eat, and to Trust in his forgiveness.

A: No one should be going up for a blessing. There is one given at the end of the Mass for everyone.
B: It’s hard for many people to take the Eucharist seriously as the actual Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ when there are so many abuses taking place in Masses these days.
Why would someone feel there’s anything special about the Eucharist when there’s an army of Extraordinary Ministers routinely being used IN Mass, and everyone is receiving in the hand while standing? Why would some people feel the need to be in a state of Grace to receive when the Eucharist is treated with such a lack of reverence?

    • @TheBadTrad
      @TheBadTrad 3 роки тому +5

@Matthew Joseph Disagree all you want, but besides there being very, very few N.O. Masses where Communicants kneel to receive, my assertion that it’s inappropriate to go up for a blessing has zero to do with how long it might take.
If you need to be in proximity to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, then you should go to Adoration.
Are you saying the blessing given in line for Holy Communion is somehow more efficacious than the one given to everyone at the end of the Mass?
I also fail to see how the claim you’ve never been denied a blessing has anything to do with it being inappropriate to go up for one. And what of the people who are in a line where there is an EMOHC? I’ve seen them give out “blessings” even though they have absolutely no authority over that person like a priest does or office to do so.
Finally, I will refer you to paragraph 22 of Sacrosanctum Concilium:
“Therefore no other person, even if he be a priest, may add, remove, or change anything in the liturgy on his own authority.” Simply put, it’s not in the Rubrics of the Mass.
A priest does not have the authority to add a blessing to the liturgy for anyone. It doesn’t matter if some priests go beyond their authority and do it in disobedience.
I am glad however to see that you realize as a Catechumen, you still have much to learn from those of us who have been in the Faith their whole lives. Keep learning. You’ll get there.

@@TheBadTrad Going up for a blessing, when you don't feel you are worthy to receive that week for whatever reason, can serve two purposes. First, it's an act of humility, and secondly, a reminder that we didn't prioritize Jesus enough this week to stay in a state of grace so as to receive Him. And yes, there's Adoration, but why miss out on another chance to be so physically close to our Savior. If we've missed out on Communion, let's at least not miss the opportunity to be so close to Him, the divine Healer, so maybe we will have the grace not to sin again this week. "If I can just touch the hem of his garment, I will be healed." Mark 5:29.

    • @TheBadTrad

@@superchris9563 Again, I will refer to paragraph 22, Sacrosanctum Concilium, which states, “Therefore no other person, even if he be a priest, may add, remove, or change *anything* in the liturgy on his own authority.”
A priest *does not have the authority to add a blessing to the liturgy for anyone* because a priest does not have the authority to add *anything* to the liturgy. It doesn’t matter if other priests go beyond their authority and do it in disobedience.
It doesn’t matter what your motivations are in doing it, it’s not proper.
As for a sign of humility, you can’t beat staying in your pew, kneeling all the while and praying. Christ fills that church and is present everywhere in it, so the excuse that you just have to be “closer” to Him by walking up and doing something not called for in the Rubrics is confounding.
It’s nothing more than the whole “everyone gets a trophy” mentality or “everyone gets to play and is not left on the sidelines”, “inclusivity” nonsense.
The fact is, the practice is illicit. I’ll share yet another reference to that:
“In 2008, Fr. Anthony Ward, S.M., Under-Secretary for the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, answered a personal letter asking precisely this question (about going up for a blessing during Communion). His response gave clear reasons why this practice is *illicit*. He cites that a blessing is given at the end of Mass after the concluding prayer when the priest makes the Sign of the Cross over the assembly. A personal blessing at Communion would be unnecessary since a corporate one will be given minutes later.”

    • @ACatholicWife
      @ACatholicWife 3 роки тому +4

@@superchris9563 it’s *inappropriate* for you to disrupt the distribution of the Holy Eucharist if you’re not able to receive the Lord.
Everyone who isn’t able to receive Holy Communion (for whatever the reason), should remain in their pew.
If we cannot receive Holy Communion, we should make a spiritual Communion telling Jesus Christ our desire to belong to Him, asking Him to increase our desire.
As @Oremus176 has said, we *ALL* receive a blessing at the conclusion of Mass.
The liturgical blessing of the Holy Mass is properly given to *each and to all* at the
👉🏼conclusion of the Mass, just a few moments subsequent to the distribution of Holy Communion.
We cannot make up the behaviors @ Mass as we may want according to emotions and desires.
Should someone approach the Altar when Father is consecrating the Holy Eucharist because they want to be close to the Lord at that moment? Would that behavior be appropriate? Of course it wouldn’t be appropriate just like it’s *inappropriate* to ask for Father to stop distributing the Holy Eucharist to bless you or anyone not there to receive Communion. This behavior is not in the rubrics of the Mass. The Priest doesn’t have the authority to add whatever he wants whenever he wants to the Mass (no matter how insistent the laity may be in asking).
This is yet one more inappropriate behavior of the laity that has infiltrated the Novus Ordo Missae.
      Think about this …
When the Eucharistic Host is placed in the monstrance for the faithful to adore, a priest *does not give blessings* in the church because he is in the presence of One who is greater than himself.
During Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, the priest or deacon wears a humeral veil in which he enfolds his hands as he holds the monstrance to show the blessing does not come from him, 👉🏼but from Christ.
*In the same way* it would be _inappropriate_ for a sacred minister to give blessings while he holds the Eucharist in his hands as communicants come forward to receive the Lord.
I understand that it’s confusing to people when we have been improperly “taught” this inappropriate behavior for the last 30+ years nonetheless it doesn’t make the practice licit.
