Love the video! I’ve been debating buying an exhaust but scared it would be too annoying. You have sold me on this option! Also I’m From CT as well (Stamford)
Heyo Buzzy - Nice inspiring e90 content. Short story, if you're interested... I've got a similarly trimmed e90; 2011 N55 335xi, 6-speed manual, cold weather and lighting packages, and currently about 84,000 miles. It has the Tasman Metallic grey/green exterior paint with saddle leather brown interior as well. I just don't the sport seats with the lumbar support. I'm new to the BMW world (in fact, this is my first non-Japanese car I've ever owned actually), but I've been watching your e90 videos for some tips/tricks etc. I've gone through the car and done a lot of maintenance since I got it making sure all the basics are done. I did the OFHG, water pump, thermostat, heater hoses, aluminum mickey mouse flange, coolant reservoir, serpentine idlers/tensioner/belt, aluminum turbo outlet and charge pipe, all the cam sensor & Vanos solenoid o-rings, and replaced the broken cupholder on the driver side to top it all off. I also just had the PPK tune remotely installed by SFBMW coding, and it definitely does make a noticeable difference in the drivability and feel of the manual car. ANYWAYS, I'm planning to cut open a stock e90 Muffler and do this PE mod as well. I had previously gotten a bolt-on muffler delete kit and tried it out - I agree with you that the resonance/drone/whatever it is is too loud in the car for daily driving. Made it "unbearable" as you said. It sounded dope in tunnels though... I'm hoping to have the same experience as you with the PE mod. Thanks for the detailed e90 content & upgrade. Fun to hear your perspective.
Glad you’ve found the videos helpful, Paul! You’re definitely on the right track, handling the preventative maintenance and doing the OEM style mods. I think you’ll really enjoy the PE mod, it’s been almost a year with mine and I still love it.
Chopped up a spare E90 muffler this weekend and did the PE mod with some 4" tips. Kinda a messy job but WELL worth it. Only been driving it a couple days but really happy with it. You're 100% right - absolutely no drone and not obnoxiously loud. Gives me a big smile driving through tunnels. Hopefully I'm going to go rip some canyons in the weeks to come!
Sorry but have a question for clarification as I am about to do this to my car. You took out resonator from inside box as well as the perforated pipe right? Which perforated pipe did you leave in?
I saw that too, my exhaust guy didn’t end up reusing it, but I didn’t find there was any drone to complain about. I’m sure it does SOMETHING but I didn’t have any issues without it.
Might give this a shot on my E89 35i, which I'm sure has a fundamentally similar muffler (and a "PE" equivalent in the 35is), especially since good aftermarket options are basically nonexistent. Hmm...
I figured it was worth a shot and ended up being exactly what I was looking for. It's likely still too quiet for some but I just wanted to be able to hear my car with the windows down lol.
Some of the pictures I show toward the end of the video along with how I describe it should be plenty, it’s basically what I told my exhaust guy. Opening them up and replacing the resonator on one side with straight pipe, and the perforated section that leads to the exhaust tip on the other side with straight pipe, then closing it back up haha. *I left the pipes leading into the crossover perforated*
Did you leave the secondary cats alone? Would you recommend replacing them with an X-pipe for a little more noise? Thanks for an amazing video, made me feel a lot more confident to do this mod versus scouring 10 year old forum posts!
Everything else is stock, and I’d recommend starting that way. Just do the mod and drive it for a while, see what you think. For me, it’s absolutely perfect. But you may want more volume, so the X-pipe could be a good second move. And thank you!
I have a question, when you can close your exhaust you put in a package (rockwool) or not ? And do you have a drone in your car ? Thanks great video 👌🏻.
Thanks! We didn’t put any of the insulation back in the mufflers and I have zero drone, so I wouldn’t really worry about it either way. If you’re concerned, just pack it back in before you put them back together.
Really thanks for your answer. I have 335i Touring, and to your fault I will make the same modification 😂. I trust you for the drone and follow your procedure because your video is super well detailed in terms of sound (exterior/interior). To the pleasure from France 😉.
@@BuzzytheBlue Love the look. I have forgestar F14's but i'm thinking of going back to something with a thicker tire profile due to the crappy roads around here(close to CT). Are your wheels the 18's? how have they held up?
That’s kinda subjective but yeah it could definitely be too much. Most people that wanna keep things relatively tame choose one or the other. Downpipe and PE is fun but I wouldn’t have done it on my car (daily) for example.
@@BuzzytheBlue yeah sometimes being in the car I don’t realise how loud my Car actually is but it really is Loud don’t think I’ll be doing the pe mod as my cars a daily
"PE mod" mimics the performance muffler that came on some of the other models like the 335is. It's a modified factory e90 muffler with some of the baffles cut out.
what about drone - I have a muffler delete on my car and the drone is terrible and my interior rattles like crazy. With this mod, does it drone at all? How bad is the interior?
I had a muffler delete too, it was awful lol. I did this after like 2 weeks with the delete. This is 100% better. With the windows up it’s barely louder than stock and ZERO drone. But with windows down it sounds fantastic, quite a bit more volume than stock.
Some tuners offer it, I’d say look up BMW tuners near you and see if they can do it. I actually had mine done at the dealer because I wanted all the documentation/stickers in the engine bay etc just because I like that little stuff lol. That’s the most expensive way by far though. It was like $800 I think. VS like $200 from a third party.
Yep, you can! It just won’t have the pops/burbles from the PPK tune. You could show them the pictures of the mufflers opened up that I have later in this video, removing the perforated sections of pipe in the muffler with straight pipe. Most places will take them off the car to do it. Pretty simple job.
@@IlRMII haha just look up the BMW Performance Pack tune, lots of independent BMW tuners/shops offer it now, and it’s a way cheaper that way vs. going to the dealership.
The guy that did it for me didn’t re-use it, so no. I don’t think it makes a huge impact as I still have zero drone etc. If you can, I’d repack it, if not don’t worry about it. Make sure to only make the changes I show in the video though. Don’t mess with the perforated crossover pipes.
The muffler delete was awful on this car, so WAY better lol. In the car the delete sounded like garbage. This is like stock +30-40% more volume, no drone, quiet when you want it to be, and nice tone.
yes i know what you mean haha, i had a muffler delete with xpipe and everything rattles and drone at 2k, altho it sounds like a beast around town but on highway is a no no
Love the video! I’ve been debating buying an exhaust but scared it would be too annoying. You have sold me on this option! Also I’m From CT as well (Stamford)
exactly what mine sounds like, so good!

Aluminum straight pipes or stainless steel?
Sounds great, did you leave the packing in the muffler? I saw video where some guy said to leave it in to reduce drone

the PE mod is amazing, but i’m trying to avoid burbles. is that all just from the PPK tune? or does the PE mod have an effect on the burbles?
That’s all the PPK tune, PE mod won’t add them on its own.
Do you think if instead of the pe mod I replace the mufflers with vibrant resonators it would sound similar
Great video! Is this the N55 or N54? Sounds amazing. I have a 435i with MPE and it is so silent. Thinking of getting a res delete or this PE
Thanks! This is an N55. MPE and this should theoretically sound very similar, this just kinda emulates that.

@@BuzzytheBlue Thanks for getting back to me bro, I’ll take that into consideration. Keep up the awesome channel!
What mic did you use to record the exhaust sound?
I think this would’ve been a DJI lav mic stuck back there. It’s either that or my Tascam DR-05.

Oh I also left the driver side flap unplugged so it’s open all the time. I wanted to hear the car more at low rpm.
Same as mine, pe mod and catless dp
what tune do you have for the burbles? do you have a dp installed as well as the PE?
Stock exhaust besides PE. And I have the factory BMW PPK tune. Basically just wanted to turn my car into the “performance edition” BMW offered.
