Jesus has had a genuinely long journey in South Park history. A major part of the 2 shorts that allowed South Park to be made at all, his initial role on the series was as a humble local tv talk show host. But over the years, through different adventures and even some scandals, Jesus has become a hero to the residents of South Park many times over, in countless different ways. I’ve already covered Satan here on the channel, so I think it’s time we take a look at the other side, and dive into the life of Jesus according to South Park.

JC actually appears very human in South Park. Frail, filled with doubt and fearful. His parentage just happens to be quite weird.

@@lemonofcake That is not part of any official doctrine of any Christian sect. I personally find it very believable. JC had many chances to just be human and he refused even as he knew what it meant.
@@vksasdgaming9472 Jesus Straight up spent 40 days without food in a forest/wilderness right after getting baptized, where he was explicitly stated to have been tempted. He didn't go through with the things he was tempted to do, but that doesn't mean he wasn't tempted. Satan himself showed up three times as a test Jesus had to endure before he got out.
That was the whole point of having Jesus, fully human and fully God, die in a horrible way designed for criminals. If he was just a dude, he would've screwed up or chickened out at some point(he actually kinda does when he asked for God to "take this cup from me", but ultimately states "not my will but your's", meaning that despite the fact that he didn't want to die like that, he was gonna follow through with what God told him, no matter what he wanted). If he was just God, then there wouldn't really be a redemption of humanity, just more proof that God doesn't mess up.
By being both, he was able to both suffer and face legitimate threats to both his faith and well being, but also play his role without messing up, and ultimately give an example of a "perfect human" that came from the fallen world and didn't mess up in any of millions of ways he could've, in comparison to Adam, who despite living in a perfect worldand with a singular way to screw up, still managed to screw up.
I understand this kinda comes off as preachy and annoying, and I understand if you don't want to read this, but I just wanted to clarify a part of your comment.

South Park always depicted religious figures in a way that made me find them cool lol. The way Satan threw the boxing match and bet it all against himself was genius.
They used them in fun ways, poking fun at them with all of it in good intention besides mohammed cus we all know how that went. But even there they never made fun of him they just depicted him in a funny manner.
Satan, Jesus and God are some of the most likable characters in the show. At least they’re some of my favorites, haha.
God is just weird, but the fact he does provide counsel to Satan and even scolds him for losing his fearsome focus from "headstrong rebel to whiny bitch" really shows that omniscient can be compassionate. Satan is just really sensitive and meek guy despite his fearsome appearance and Jesus is just funny anachronism.

Yeah, I don't see why it wouldn't be possible. We haven't seen the full extent of Jesus' abilities, but being the son of God, it stands to reason that he could visit someone's mind if he wanted.
Or maybe every depiction of him is real in the first place? A sort of extension of the omniscience/omnipresence thing?

This may be the most positive portrayal of jesus without being explicitly religious. It's a lot funnier than the typical "let's make him a shitty person" approach.

Theres an episode in family guy were Jesus talks about how he's a virgin and how he'd love for his first time to be with Lois. Peter pities him and accepts. He later finds out by other men that Jesus will constantly claim to be a virgin so guys will let him sleep with their wives.
Its weird because the show makes fun of religion and people that follow it but doesn't usually potray them as bad people

The reason why Jesus' place in Imaginationland isn't an anomaly is because of the conclusion of that trilogy itself: they realize and declare that anything you imagine to be real, is real. It's actually the explanation for how Jesus exists in South Park to begin with: at some point he was imagined to be real, and that therefore made him real, and as such he was able to move into South Park.
So hell and heaven are technically in imaginationland?
@@jordanloux3883 absolutely, which means they exist in reality as well, someone imagined them, so they exist.
It's a big concept to tackle, and one I didn't properly appreciate when Imaginationland first aired, but years later I did come to realize that the message of the trilogy sure feels true: if you imagine something, it in many senses becomes real. Perhaps more real than we'll ever properly be able to comprehend. See I also subscribe to the idea of the multiverse, but the premise of the multiverse is a bit hard to make peace with when it means that every conceivable possibility must exist as some universe, even 2D cartoons or deities. But that's when it hit me, perhaps our imaginations: our books, our movies, our video games, even just our stories that we tell to ourselves help fill out the multiverse by creating universes that can contradict the rules of our universe.
I think that Jesus exists both in South park and Imaginationland because some people think he is real and some people think he is imaginary

Once you do, or at least do a bit of investigation into the development of the concept, you'll realise that a) it's mostly an intellectual exercise aimed at resolving math problems and b) there is little proof of the validity of *any* of the current multiverse hypotheses, and what little evidence exists is debatable at best even amongst the foremost experts of theoretical physics. Alder's razor: If something cannot be settled by experiment or observation, then it is not worthy of debate, i.e. before trying to figure out how the multiverse works, we should prove it exists. Otherwise all you're doing is founding a religion.
As a kid the only thing I knew about South Park was Jesus was in it (my mum would watch it). Now when I’ve mentioned watching it my grandma goes “that’s the paper cut out one with Jesus right? I liked Jesus in that”
I'm Christian and I quite enjoy Jesus portrayal in SP, it's quite funny and human.

@@Johnny2Cellos That's great. And I just thought of something, when were those HD versions made and released in the first place? I once heard that the Ninja episode was first shown in a limited HDDVD shortly before the series' full move to HD in S13, and the rest followed soon afterwards in digital stores and TV reruns. However, the Blu-rays of the earlier seasons in HD weren't released until much later. I'd suggest looking up this topic, might be worthy for a video since I don't think anyone has done so yet. Like, if there're any visual or audio changes compared to the originals. Overall, re-rendering 10 full SD seasons in widescreen HD while still keeping the animation and aesthetic intact should've been a massive task.
Great timing, I'm actually researching a video now about the SD vs HD South Park episodes. They basically were able to re-render every ep in HD bc they kept all of their old data from the SD era. But looking at the differences is really interesting

I always enjoy Jesus, he's not my favourite South Park character but I still get excited when he comes on screen. My favourite Jesus moment is from the season 11 Easter episode. Good video
As a christian, there are for sure a few jokes that got me feelin odd, but for the most part, I think South Park's Jesus is pretty clever, and is very much what Jesus would be like if he here more of just a regular dude that "happened" to be God's son. Can't agree with their entire take on religion and faith but its sooooooo much more interesting, challenging, and clever than 90% of what's out there.
Edit - watching more of your essay, I wonder if Jesus is like a proxy for the genuinely faithful and their path over the institutional religious figures that are so fairly lampooned.

Honestly it's better than Family Guy's version. It's kinda funny that he's a talk show host. Him just being a regular Joe who only occasionally goes into action I feel kinda fits him too. He seems like a simple man.
@@jordanloux3883 I remember then saying that they love Story as a concepy and see religion as sort of a proto-Story. Even though Trey said he thought the Gospel story was silly, he's at least interested by it enough to incorporate parts into his art.
I wish more people could appreciate the culture and the Art of Story in the Bible or Quaran or other holy books regardless of if they personally believe.

@@grenouillesupreme we’re probably thinking of different traditions in Pali canon they refer Gautama Buddha as not being the only Buddha and that there are many previous ones will in the Mahayana tradition there’s at least 12 of them and it’s implied there’s more. At least that’s what I learned studying religion.

I really appreciate how childish SP is. It takes real, adult situations and fears but tackles them through the lens of a child, causing absurdist situations like Saint Peter being a rabbit in the process.
The depiction of Muhammad is why I've been collecting physical media. That shit got scrubbed post 9/11. A couple of animators lose their lives and all of a sudden it didn't and can't happen. I never could reconcile that episode with cartoon wars. It didn't used to matter.

Jesus Christ of Christianity being a character with an entire personality and satisfying character arc is the type of dumbassery I strive to achieve in my own writing.
“Buddha don’t do coke in front the kids!” is one of my favorite lines from Jesus at this point throughout the series of South Park along with “Maybe because “I’m the Son Of God brainiac”, “My son, I’m not touching that with a sixty foot pole”, “You’re all a bunch of Judases!” and “My children, you should know something… I’m packing!”.
I still find this to be one of my favorite representations of Jesus.

So my theory on the Jesus from Imaginationland, is that he’s the Jesus portrayed in the Book of Revelations. Or another theory is that the Jesus we’ve been seeing IS the Imaginationland version. But there’s a lot of issues with that theory.

i appreciate trey parker and matt stone a lot for depicting jesus not as someone to be cruelly made fun of, but satirical in a way that plays with funny ideas and 'what ifs' without actually pinning a target on anyone. i often feel like people, christians especially, tend to take religion way too seriously sometimes, so this is a nice refresher that not everything needs to be so serious all the time, and that it's okay to have fun.
it's like, they're not making their interpretation of jesus hold a gun to paint him as someone who's aggressive and violent. they're making him hold a gun because like... dude... it's _jesus..._ holding a _gun..._ that's funny as hell, and it's funny because we all know it's something he wouldn't actually do.
So another layer to the joke when Jesus shows up in the anti bullying video when you start the clips just a few seconds earlier.
The producer to yelled at Stan “Jesus Christ, just get out…” so Jesus isn’t just chastising him about being a jerk. He’s literally shown up after he “took the lords name in vain” in the childhood interpretation of the meaning.
To me that just makes it more funny. Like he’s always listening and showed up going “so I heard you were talking shit. What’s up?”
