    I wanna know who in the world first thought that chiclet style keyboards are better than classic keyboards.

    • @Animated__Freak
      @Animated__Freak 7 років тому +32

      I don't know but I think the first thinkpad to use chiclet was the X230 and it featured as an option a backlit keyboard. Maybe when they where implemented the backlit they decided it was easier to do with a chiclet design. I know on some newer thinkpads you can do a mod to fit an older style keyboard in them, which is pretty popular.

    I have an X201i with a Core i3 and an X220 with a Core i5. I'd say that they are basically comparable, but the wider display on the X220 'and the slightly faster processor) are worthwhile improvements. A Core2Duo is really a bit slow for modern use. I had an R500 with one, and when it finally died, I was shocked by how much faster the replacement was at web browsing and multi-tasking.
    My web browser frequently bloats up to 3Gb or so all by itself, so I consider 8Gb to be a minimum, even for routine use. 16 Gb is nice (I have this in my home W510), but 8Gb in the portable X-Series laptops is probably enough. That's what I'm using. An SSD is definitely a big upgrade and highly recommended.

    I always hit my 4gb limit, sometimes just browsing.
    8 is great but if you like to run virtual machines for even visual novels because dealing with wine is annoying, it's a nice guarantee. Same with core2duo vs i5/i7
    Now if you use 7zip and need to compress shit, a i7 and 16gb is 100% benefit.
    EDIT:
    1366x768 is standard for laptops even now.
    You should get a 1600x900 or even 1080p ips for that x220, you wont regret it.

    Something that really annoys me the most about the X220 is the lack of 16:10 displays. You lose soooo much usable screen space with 16:9 panels and for computer purposes 16:9 is the absolute worst and useless format. Especially on 12' subnotebooks. 16:10 always made more sense as it combined the best of both worlds. The vertical space of 4:3 and the horizontal space of 16:9.

      The good news is that if the X220 is successfully Librebooted, the chances of the X230, T420 and other post-i5 posts getting a Libreboot increases drammatically. The modern Intel ME has been a big stalling factor in freeing the BIOS in later computers, but if the X220 is successful, that means that overcoming similar MEs in other devices should be much easier.

    Is there any modern laptop that follows the thinkpad philosophy ?
    I mean in the sense of them being very easily reparable, parts being easily replaceable and laptops being upgradable.
    Of course without need to have the mptherboard exposed in order to acces hard drive or whatever.
    I ask because it is going to be more and more difficult to get parts to fix them as tome goes on. Even if you are very careful with your thinkpa, eventually we are going to run out of old second or third hand thinkpads to use.
    What do we do then ?

    You didn't mentioned different aspect ratios of the two screens (16:9 for X220, 16:10 for X200). Also, the X200 has only VGA output, hence a plugged external monitor may show a somewhat reduced video quality. Lastly, although Core 2 Duo may indeed be enough for most folks, it is not as energy sufficient as Core i5/i7 (read: reduced running time on battery).

Some s models have a 1440 x 900 screen, but it is still that shitty TN display.

    • @LukeSmithxyz
      @LukeSmithxyz 7 років тому +2

      My experience is going to be anecdotal, but I'll tell you: when I got my X200, it had just gotten new thermal paste; it keeps very cool and only starts heating up if it's on wool and doing something really intense.
      The X220 has not gotten new thermal paste in years and when I'm recording video, for example, it can get into 9X degrees celsius (too hot for my comfort!). I was actually ordering mini-screwdrivers now that I need to reapply thermal paste myself. I suspect it will be as cool as my X200 when I do, or at least manageable.
      So I'd say if you know how to reapply thermal paste or can have a friend do it, you shouldn't worry about it. Otherwise, you might want to buy one advertised as refurbished with new CPU paste.

    • @LukeSmithxyz
      @LukeSmithxyz 7 років тому +2

      You can check the Libreboot website to see what motherboards they support. They've mostly focused on computers with native Intel processors, but there are a few others. I will say AMD processors have been just as bad; they have something analogous to the ME preventing Libreboot from being easy.
      Of course it's less the processor itself that's a problem and more what kind of garbage comes with it.

    • @woplinspray
      @woplinspray 7 років тому

      besides from the by libreboot supported hardware, are there some more companies that manufacture cpus/mainboards without these "additional features" and could possibly librebooted in the future?

    • @Retro6502
      @Retro6502 7 років тому +3

      There's a company called Purism that's removing as much as possible, but reality is you can't completely get away from it. All Intel chipsets since 2008 include the Management Engine. Up to the Core 2 series chips it could be disabled, which is what a Librebooted x200 does. In the Core i3/i5/i7 it's not possible to turn it off. The best that can be done is to trim down the ME firmware as much as possible, but the ME will shut the system down if it's not supplied a minimally valid firmware signed by Intel. AMD has something similar. The only way to completely avoid it is use x86 from before mid-2008 (like Thinkpad x60) or look at an ARM based system.
