Just to let you know. I followed thee directions and set 2 traps about 3 months ago and last night I saw that one of them was full. The trap works! I will be spending next weekend building a TBH.Thank you so much for your videos
The trap worked great! I built one just like your viedo and hung it in my tree in early May. After several weeks I didnt check as often. On one day when I had guests over a young lady said I had bees in my tree and sure enough a swarm in the trap.
I live in the DFW area and will be using some of the tricks and tips I learned in your book. I'm also enjoying the videos. I'm a new member (1st year beek) and my wife and I will be attending the Central Texas Beekeepers class on March 28th -- hope to see you there!
Hey, whats with the guy bitching about someone honestly trying to help other people succeed? Anyway I ended up with a strong hive in two, medium hives that are now too small. As Im in southern Cal. we have had great bee weather so I added a third level, eight more frames and a feeder too with beehealthy two weeks ago. A buddy and I just opened it and wow! Eight frames of comb, mostly built out of comb and honey and lots of bees. Were stoked and thankful for your help. Bought the book too.
Thanks for the vid. I built one sort of like yours. 10.5” deep, 6 frames wide. 2” dia entrance hole. Painted it green. Set up about 50feet from my hives.Set it up against a tree I was going to hang it from. Went inside to get wire and 3 frames to start with and lemon grass oil and when I came out there we some already checking it out. Keep you posted on results.
Aha! Bigfoot finally showed up (at about 4:20), Thanks for all the interesting tips! Saw a swarm two years ago in a very popular park - it was cherry blossom time. Interesting they were hanging on a branch in the most prominent tree right next to a stone footbridge - and about 40 feet from a stream. The reaction of passers by was quite amusing ... I guess they're just "city folk." Good luck this year, and thanks!
If you set them up in your apiary to trap your own swarm, how many would you set up, how far away from the hives ,and what direction N,S, E or W from the hives? Also, will the traps encourage a hive in the apiary to swarm? Thanks, Rob
India has a long and honor tradition of beekeeping. So long as the bees you seek to catch are Apis Melifera, you will be fine. Apis C., however, is a different breed altogether.
Just got your book, thanks very much it's great. I appreciate your use of both Metric and Imperial measurements, very considerate (I'm non US so it saves me a lot of time).
Thank you for the video. I've not dealt with bees before, but I'd like to start. I know of an oak tree on a fence row at the edge of a meadow where bees went onto a hole about 18 ft off the ground for the last 2 years, but they didn't stay there long. Would it be worth trying a trap on that same tree? I can build, so would a 40 liter trap be more attractive to the bees than a 30 liter trap? Thanks again for the intereesting and informative tutorial. I'll check out more of your videos.
@TamaraChing I encourage you to talk to nearby restaurants if one with a roof would let you beekeep. You may get 2 birds with one stone, a location and a buyer who wants all your honey.
@OutOfaBlueSky I think there were bees , just not european honey bees, there are many species of bees they just arent considered to be comercialy important , apis milliferos likely chased several species into exctintion
@ukukachoo traps never enourage hives to swarm. Only catch swarms that occur. I'd set them up 100 yards or so from the hives in all 4 directions. Swarms normally want to go 1/4 of a mile, however, so farther is good, but you do need them close enough that you will checks them ever few weeks.
I built my swarm traps based on your video recommendations. The only difference is I put a one inch vent hole with a screen over it towards the top of the box. After watching your video again you said that Honey Bees want a limited amount of light. Should I cover these vent holes?
28"15"5" it takes 3 frames standard with a lot of space I've also made a hole/ entrance more towards the left corner rather then centre of the box. I have also planed to use it as a mating box in the future as it take 3 frames (pollen-honey-water) I would like to know what are your opinions/advice on the matter and if it would work Thank you. Looking forward to hearing from you.
@1969626 Yes! A used 8 or 10 frame deep works great. Use screws and not nails to attached bottom, lid, and hang board. Drill hole thru bottom, put in all frames, (old is better than new).
just love this vid i put up bait hives and made some out of fruit crates uploaded it too let you know how i get on not to mention that i put the hives facing 1.north 1.south 1. east and 1. west to see which will get the swarm oh and i learnt how to make your own swarm lure from a Turkish bee forum trying that out too if it wrk i'll post that on to show how it's done because in Turkey funny but they don't have lemongrass oil silly really but there u go C YA!!
in your video on TBH comb handling, you show a TBH Nuc, wouldn't that be a good form of trap to have if you're harvesting for TBH hives? it would be a lot simpler to do instead of trying to cut comb and sewing it onto the new TBH frames, in this case you would just need to lift the frames form the nuc to the new hive. your thoughts?
Hey man..just got your swarm book..question i have is I use all mediums. Can i make a swarm trap using the dimensions of a medium frame? I know you said they like certain sizes. Great book by the way!
This may clear up some measurements his gives in his video. Hive Body (deeps) = 1.7 cu ft =48.138 liters ILL Super (medium super) = 1.1 cu ft = 31.148 liters Both as mentioned in the video = 2.8 cu ft = 79.28 liters = way to big in my opinion.
i need your opinion sir...i have everything you need to start a bee box for honey .ect...the only thing i don't have is bees...i tried a jar of sugar syrup water and have a few drops of lemon grass oil...it's been about a week now and no bees...I'm in the city so I'm limited as to where i can set up a swarm trap...any ideas...i really appreciate your help and information...thank you...dave...
hey i was wondering where do you put youre bait hives and how do you get permission and who do you call to put them on other peoples land or parks etc.
In india the common variety is Apis Cerana. Pease advise me whether I can use your book to catch it. If not, kindly advise me alternate methods to catch Apis Cerana.
Hi! Paul hope your well, I have a Q, hope you can help me- I have made a bait box or swarm box out of a draw...yeah I know I didn't want to waste the wood, the measurements are as follows
HI I HAVE ROBBING GOING ON IN 2 OF MY NEW SWARMS I HAVE AN INNER FEEDER DID SPILL SOME SUGAR WATER DID REDUCE THE ENTRANCE AND DID PUT 8#WIRE ALONG WITH WET TOWEL I DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO APART FROM CLOSE THE ENTRANCE FOR 2 DAYS OR SO AFTER STOCKING UP WITH MORE SUGAR WATER AND WATER WAT DO U THINK THNZ
@OutOfaBlueSky The trouble is that back in the 1600s the population of man in N America was next to nothing compared to what it is today. There are other pollinators other than bees. Not all plants require pollination by pollinators either. But the trouble is your food production drops by about 1/3 without pollination from bees. With 1Bn people already starving around the world add another 2Bn and let's see how long civilisation lasts...
First, no bees doesn't mean death of mankind. That is a myth. Man was was around for thousands of years in North America without bees. They are an invasive species in America introduced in the 1600s and we would survive again without them if we had to. On the bait, use Lemon Grass Oil or rub the inside of the hive with lemon grass, itself.
I don't think it will work with Apis Cerana very well. Lemongrass oil won't work, they don't have the same reaction to the navasov phermon. But they will go into a small cavity. You will have to research the size that works for Apis C.
I WENT THROUGH TH HIVE AND FOUND THE QUEEN CAGED HER I'M GONA LET HER OUT IN ABOUT THREE DAYS ANY TIPS SHOULD I REUSE THE SAME SWARM TRAP NEAR THE SWARM WHICH I CAUGHT AND REHIVED OR DIFFERENT PLACE OR SHOULS I MOVE THE HIVE AND LEAVE SWARM TRAP OLD PLACE PLZ LET ME NO I'LL POST MY VID SOON
Drones don’t search for a hive location. You should have corrected this. I didn’t watch because of that one statement at the very beginning. Do you really know that the Drones are scouting?
The US rules the world, everyone reads & speaks English (including China & Japan), and even the Brits use inches and feet so use the standard measuring system.
Lol as if the Chinese and Japanese speak English. And btw the brits were using imperial before you. Your system is based on that out dated system. Oh yeah and by the way, scientists including those at your NASA prefer to use metric. Gee I wonder why that is.
So what, it's more widely used than any other. Good grief. And by the way, metric is used here more than you think, perhaps you should educate your self so you won't look stupid.
Your basic woodworking skills need improvement. For example, the first thing most users learn about a circular saw is to use a straight edge next to the shoe in order to cut a straight line.
I can cut a sheet of plywood in half using a chalk line and you wouldnt know which is the factory edge. Since your so keen on disparaging his skill I feel the need to tell you that if you need to run your saw down a staight edge for every cut then you sir, have little skill.
***** ive cut thousands of sheets of plywood and only wannabe carpenters with zero skill use a straight a edge to "rip" or "crosscut" plywood. I know I cant cut it as straight as the factory but Its damn close and I dont have to waste time clamping a straight edge down for every cut.
***** lol. Your crew sucks then. It must take you a month to sheath and deck a house. I cant believe you act like you know what you're doing but cant even follow a straight line with a saw. What do you do anyway? Take an eight foot level and clamp it down on both ends before you make every single cut? Thats ridiculous. A table saw would even be faster.
Just to let you know. I followed thee directions and set 2 traps about 3 months ago and last night I saw that one of them was full. The trap works! I will be spending next weekend building a TBH.Thank you so much for your videos

This is brilliant. This looks like it will work -- I'll put top bars in here for my top bar hive, and this will totally work. I hope!
Thanks for the vid. I built one sort of like yours. 10.5” deep, 6 frames wide. 2” dia entrance hole. Painted it green. This Beek has a great book, I followed it and so far.. I have captured 12 swarms in 4 weeks

Great video, I may try using some nuc boxes since I have a few extras. Or I may go ahead and build a few to your specs. Thanks for sharing!!!
Great video!
One thing - instead of telling us about you buying new mikes, you should've subtitled what you were saying at that moment.
Thanks.
Lavalier with a proper sound recorder and fluffies, lots of fluffies :D
Thank you for your response
Great explanation. Thanks !
Just got your book, thanks very much it's great. I appreciate your use of both Metric and Imperial measurements, very considerate (I'm non US so it saves me a lot of time).
great video, i got question can a plywood or an osb be used for these traps or is it better to stick with a real wood?
Several sources say bees don't like the smell of fresh-cut wood. Plywood and OSB have chemical smells that may repel bees unless they are way old.
@@tomrobinson9108 Yeah, lots of industrial glue. Big nono. Stick to less treated or even old wood.
Thank you for the video. I've not dealt with bees before, but I'd like to start.

@RodneyAHampton Wind noise was a bit bad. LGO = Lemon Grass Oil. 5-6 drops per bait hive. Works wonderfully.
@TamaraChing I encourage you to talk to nearby restaurants if one with a roof would let you beekeep. You may get 2 birds with one stone, a location and a buyer who wants all your honey.

Hi could you please tell me why you use the lemongrass and what does this do to/for the bees, thanks for the fantastic videos keep them coming.
You said you were in Texas. What part? I live north of Dallas along the Red River and want to try a swarm trap. When do you put them out?
I built my swarm traps based on your video recommendations. The only difference is I put a one inch vent hole with a screen over it towards the top of the box. After watching your video again you said that Honey Bees want a limited amount of light. Should I cover these vent holes?
Hi, Have you ever tried to put a piece of comb in the swarm to encourage the bees to stay in the trap?
Thank you , Jim
The Fat Bee Man suggests against comb as itll likely accumulate wax moths before long.
Did anyone notice how happy he was to see his dog ? Odd thing to notice I know :p
That is most awesome! What region do you live in?
@1969626 Yes! A used 8 or 10 frame deep works great. Use screws and not nails to attached bottom, lid, and hang board. Drill hole thru bottom, put in all frames, (old is better than new).
what do you think about the size for a swarm box is it too big small or...? Thank you

Hi Mr. Blue Sky, how do I know if I caught a queen Bee?
@OutOfaBlueSky wat does the lemon grass oil do
how soon would you transfer a caught swarm to the permanent hive? Thanks. Texarkana Texas.
Is your swarm trapping DVD out yet?
Hello, enjoy your channel and this video
Hey man..just got your swarm book..question i have is I use all mediums. Can i make a swarm trap using the dimensions of a medium frame? I know you said they like certain sizes. Great book by the way!
Yea, winter started last week, it should be over by Friday. :0)
Great job, thank you for sharing you insight and wisdom
once a swarm moves in, how long do you wait to move the swarm box?
@OutOfaBlueSky Thank you!
Been delayed, but the DVD is still planned for summer 2013.
This may clear up some measurements his gives in his video.
Hive Body (deeps) = 1.7 cu ft =48.138 liters
ILL Super (medium super) = 1.1 cu ft = 31.148 liters
Both as mentioned in the video = 2.8 cu ft = 79.28 liters = way to big in my opinion.
i need your opinion sir...i have everything you need to start a bee box for honey .ect...the only thing i don't have is bees...i tried a jar of sugar syrup water and have a few drops of lemon grass oil...it's been about a week now and no bees...I'm in the city so I'm limited as to where i can set up a swarm trap...any ideas...i really appreciate your help and information...thank you...dave...
can you use a hive body or super for a swarm trap
@tbonekel March 1 for Central Texas. I'd think March 7 for Dallas.
Great Info. Thanks!
I should have added this:
A five frame (deep) (nuc) (bait hive) = 0.85 cu ft = 24.069 liters
Would you use a second hand bait hive?
hey i was wondering where do you put youre bait hives and how do you get permission and who do you call to put them on other peoples land or parks etc.
In india the common variety is Apis Cerana. Pease advise me whether I can use your book to catch it. If not, kindly advise me alternate methods to catch Apis Cerana.
Thanks for video
hi i was hoping you can help me what can i use my propolis for or how? and where can i sell my propolis. Thank You
@jannassary Well, a mating nuc needs to be larger than days of old, because of SHB infestations. They need a bigger nuc to repel SHB.
Whats the status of your swarm-trapping DVD?
Hi! Paul hope your well, I have a Q, hope you can help me-
I have made a bait box or swarm box out of a draw...yeah I know I didn't want to waste the wood, the measurements are as follows
Oh beehive everyone, love yur bees tender. Bee happy
HI I HAVE ROBBING GOING ON IN 2 OF MY NEW SWARMS I HAVE AN INNER FEEDER DID SPILL SOME SUGAR WATER DID REDUCE THE ENTRANCE AND DID PUT 8#WIRE ALONG WITH WET TOWEL I DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO APART FROM CLOSE THE ENTRANCE FOR 2 DAYS OR SO AFTER STOCKING UP WITH MORE SUGAR WATER AND WATER WAT DO U THINK THNZ
does this work did you catch anything with it before
I get spiders in my bait hives. How do you keep spiders out?
Yes, Id use any bait hive I can get my grubby hands on.
THANK U VERY MUCH MON WELL SAID .....
will a hive that u own go to that trap or wat
@OutOfaBlueSky

Get over the metric measuring system, you're in the US and by the grace of GOD you're in TEXAS!
Get over the customary system! YOUR on the Internet which has no borders and where the metric system rules.
The US rules the world, everyone reads & speaks English (including China & Japan), and even the Brits use inches and feet so use the standard measuring system.

Speak American
