  • EN: The Baltic Way or Baltic Chain (also Chain of Freedom; Estonian: Balti kett; Latvian: Baltijas ceļš; Lithuanian: Baltijos kelias; Russian: Балтийский путь Baltiysky put) was a peaceful political demonstration that occurred on 23 August 1989. Approximately two million people joined their hands to form a human chain spanning 675.5 kilometres (419.7 mi) across the three Baltic states - Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, which were considered at the time to be constituent republics of the Soviet Union.
LT: Baltijos kelias (latv.

Chechnya was almost able to get out of that mess, and probably could have gotten out if more countries had stepped in to protect a democracy in the Caucasus.

@@mikuskokenbergs8853 Proud to be a brother! Proud to be of Baltic heritage! Would not have it any other way. We are a half of a world away, but I think not really that much different at all. We all want the same things. That our children are safe and healthy, have a good education and an opportunity to prosper. What you did on the Stone Bridge in Riga in 1989 led to that end. There are a few times in recent history that stand out. I think the Baltijos Kelias is top on the list of these things. I think there is a footprint in concrete in Vilnius marking where the first person in LT stood in the line. I look forward to seeing that. Not sure I will be able to follow it all of the way through Riga and Tallinn, but the emotion in me will certainly resonate through the wonderful countries of Latvia and Estonia as well.

Mydaughter is the same age right now as I was when this happened. My mother and I participated in this event and I remember it well, the crowds, the energy. My daughter just asked me what am I watching.... And it is hard for me to hold back the tears as I am trying to explain.... And it is even harder with the war in Ukraine.... It makes even more so important that we never forget.

    • @JimM-zs8ul

May the world never forget what this movement accomplished. A difficult thing to try to explain to a child, certainly as they are unaware of the difficulty of history. Those of us who pay attention will never forget your contribution to history, I am in great appreciation for what you and your mother have done. I am of LT descent, my maternal grandparents having emigrated to the US from LT in 1918, but I remain actively interested in the three sisters by the sea, with great love and respect to all of you. I as well remain hopeful that our friends in Ukraine will prevail. It will take a continued large commitment from the US and Europe, but it must be done. We must continue to do so. We need to remain on the right side of history.

Because for me freedom is important not only for countries but also for myself, i want to be free like so many others. I picked Lithuanian because trough what i have read, Lithuanians are the people that fight the hardest for their freedom and it inspires me

A human chain along the NATO Russian/Belarusian Border.
      “Hands For NATO”
I’m thinking on the anniversary of the beginning of the Cold War. March 12th 2023. Let’s Do This. For Peace. For Freedom. For Democracy. And also being 1 mile from the border. Just so nobody gets shot. Also, I’m guessing at least 12 million people can do it. Alongside this, we can also do it for 1 hour. 12 million people 1 mile from the NATO/Belarusian And Russian Border, Holding Hands For 1 Hour. Alongside This, I’m thinking with some help we can get the word out.

Such a beautiful, wonderful event! It makes me emotional to see it. I live in Northern California in America, but all of my known ancestors came from Lithuania. My grandparents on my mother’s side of the family and great-grandparents on my Father’s side emigrated from Lithuania way back - before the communists took over, but I’m so glad Lithuania / Lietuvos is free! All over the world, it continues to be an ongoing struggle to gain and maintain basic human liberties. I am, at this late point in my life, studying Lithuanian history and find it fascinating. I hope to one day be able to afford to see the very interesting country of my ancestors. 💛💚❤️

@@nojussimkevicius680 I don't get that train of thought either. How in the hell is oppression ever better than freedom? I'm half LT living in the US and am extremely proud of my Lithuanian heritage. I think about it all of the time. The entire reason my grandparents emigrated to the US in 1918 was to escape the oppression of the dictators and look for a better life. Things have changed much for the better for your (our) wonderful country and that can only be seen as a positive thing. Not sure how anyone can think otherwise I just find such comments unbelievable, actually. The Baltic Way was one of the most impressive peaceful uprisings in all of history and it got the job done. The little guys that just wouldn't quit. I regret that my grandparents did not live long enough to see their beloved homeland returned as a free and independent nation after the many wars and occupations. I plan to visit you very soon.
