A Bowie knife, sometimes just a bowie, is a large knife (cleaver) with a characteristic blade shape, on the butt of which a bevel is made at the tip, having the shape of a concave arc ("pike"). The tip of the blade is directed slightly upwards. The bevel of the butt often has a cutting edge or is a false blade. Many Bowie knives have a developed cross (guard).
The special shape of the knife is used for convenient application of a cutting or secant blow. This knife is used as a combat, hunting or work knife.
The knife is named after the inventor - James (Jim) Bowie, the hero of the Texas Revolution. Popular in the USA.
