Jauk Manis is a traditional solo masked dance piece commonly performed in both religious and secular contexts in Bali. The term “Jauk'' refers both to a temple guardian within Balinese Hindu mythology as well as to the collection of dances in which he is portrayed. Jauk dances do not tell a story, but rather depict aspects of the Jauk’s character. This piece presents the Jauk in a sweet and refined, or “manis,” style.
