This video is funny, because many hours later Jack Tretton of Sony went on stage at E3 and said there'll be no DRM and that they'll support used disc based games lol! At the time they totally destroyed Microsoft!
I love how many old videos YT has been recommending to me and I have already seen most of these as I came to the channel pretty early so seeing these old ones its really nostalgic as I am really not the same guy I was in June 2013 and I'm sure you guys are not the same either. Time flies my friends
I like discs and collectors editions and stuff! It's quite satisfying to have a shelf of games sitting there for me to casually browse when I don't know what I want to play
Not to mention the requirement of a broadband connection restricts a whole area of people that don't have a regular internet in countries or people who can't afford to have broadband on a regular basis. It will also turn the device into a brick when the service is discontinued.
I dont know why anyone would want an xbox one after this. I mean they tried to screw you over. The only reason why they reversed their policies was because they were getting shit on by the PS4 preorders not because they listened to us. How could anyone trust microsoft anymore? because i dont
Thank you for being so honest! I own 150+ games for the x-box 360 and after hearing all of this stuff I'm sad to say I won't be buying the new x-box. But hey, I sometimes buy secondhand games and hey, I don't live in the US so I guess Microsoft doesn't care about me as a consumer anyway. If sony pulls the same crap I won't be buying a PS4 either. A shame.
100% agree with Mike about the 24 hour check in nonsense; it's totally unfeasible to expect everyone to have a connection guaranteed to be up every day forever, without bricking the console. This could be a deal breaker for me and my broadband connection is faultless.
Whoa, angry Jane! Impressive. Seriously, great show guys, respect your honesty. As someone who usually buys new & doesn't trade these measures don't affect me directly. However I appreciate that it does affect many, many people. I want an X1 to play exclusive new games but even for me this all leaves a sour taste. It was exciting, now it's just depressing.
Apparently you can't post links on UA-cam... D'oh!!! The video is called "Dualshock 4" if you find it buddy, pause it at about 2:30, you'll see there it says the PS4 Eye is sold separately and thus one would assume optional.
I think that a better alternative to an Internet connection every 24 hours is that you would be required to put the disc for the game you want to play to verify that you haven't sold it
I think the PS4 Eye might actually be sold separately. There was an NA video about the Dualshock 4 and at the end that some features may require a PS4 Eye, and that the PS4 Eye was sold separately. So if that is the case, it would have to be optional. I'll try and find the chuffing link. Hang on.
I love the fact that, even though you work for outside xbox, you arn't afraid to air your true opinions. I realise you have to keep a brave face up, but its so refreshing to hear your actual opinions about the xbox one. you guys are great
there are more consoles coming out soon as well, like they forgot to mention the steambox or the ouya consoles. You will be able to play PC games on the steambox so anything you buy off steam is playable on this console
Ah, I remember this. We were all telling ourselves that Sony would have to introduce something similar to the used game controls. We didn't even think about the price as obviously Microsoft wouldn't make the same mistake Sony did with the PS3. Happy memories.
the good thing about no trade ins (on pc &steam anyway) because devs arent loosing money through trade ins on pc, they can afford to do the massive discounts you see on steam all the time, perhaps if on consoles they do the same you will get the 75% offs? i would rather get massive discounts than £5 off a new game.
It's all personal preference, but you can plug your PC into your TV with HDMI and use Xbox controllers with PC games too. Steam "Big Picture" turn you PC into a console like interface, plus the online is free!
there is just one(lol) thing it dont understand. It says it checks in every 24 hours so if your internet is down for less then that can u still play single player
People are not looking at the benefits of losing the ability to resale your games. The trade-off is that there will be WAY more sales for digital games on Xbox live. The reason there are very few sales now is because publishers don't want to allow sales on games that can be easily traded in. Once you take away the used games publishers are more willing to allow these major deals. Just look on the PC where even EA has major sales on their games. I'm willing to give up used games for more sales.
I've made a point of talking about the new Xbox with friends and family who are casual or non-gamers - once they were made away of the check-in system & game licensing policy, they were disgusted by it too.
No that is what's wrong with UA-cam comments, first you're assuming he somehow knew he wasn't going to like the video before he watched it but watched it anyway. Also you're implying that it's wrong to post any kind of negative comment. I may not agree with Tom's point either, but people are still perfectly entitled to voice their opinions, good or bad.
I love this channel, you should definitely cover platforms in your videos. You may have to if the Xbox One becomes the flop its lining up to be. (That I and want to see your views on the Sony conference)
but you have to buy the kinect and the internet thing is big for people who dont have internet... like 300k+ soldiers from america most of whom can get an xbox on base but not a reliable net connection
It seems as if they want you to keep the Xbox 360, but then they're trying to rip it away from you. I feel like they're going into a downward spiral. They're focusing on what they want, and not what their fans want
sony said the ps4 never needs to go on-line,therefore theres no way to implement that kind of sytem to difficult trading, for me and to a lot of people they already won next-gen
I can see a two-tier pricing structure. Say £20 for downloaded games with single play and £40 for shop bought boxed games with a sharing licence. Or is that just the Bargaining stage of grief? Still dumbstruck that you won't be able to play games if you're not connected.
Oh yeah, they are indeed across PS4, PS3 and PS Vita. But it does show that any illusions that Sony are going to somehow be 'out gunned' on exclusives is a bit silly. 15 exclusives? That's a great start from Microsoft and a very welcome break from their reliance on exclusive DLC from third parties, but given Sony's big first party studios (Guerrilla excepted) haven't showed their hand, I think it's fair to say Sony will have a few surprises too.
1 - that is true but it still cuts out at least a minimum of 5% of xbox 360 users 2 - that is also true but you were able to lend it to friend, or sell it to whom ever you wanted without the hassle of a 1hr or 24hr checking. 3 - yes you are forced to use the kinect since the kinect won't even turn on without the kinect hooked to the xbox one. if they are not forcing you to use it, it should not have to even be hooked up if a person never wants to use it.
It does sound little bit like you guys are hugely unconvinced by this new Xbox - which I share after all I have read. The one glimmer of light is that they change the rules of engagement with regard to check-in and perhaps shed more light on Kinect-gate. Long term maybe you need a name change: OutsidePC anyone?
Regardless of how we feel about the XBone and disagree on the on the merits of it's many 'features', I think we can ALL agree that during the last three weeks Microsoft has given us a masterclass in how NOT to run a PR campaign. Do I think it will sell? Yes. When the mainstream media ie The Mirror, Metro, and The One Show get a hold of it, all the points that have forum posters up in arms at the moment will be reduced to merely caveats and the end of the "Kinect 2.0 it's the future!" piece.
DRM...that's a company saying flat out that they do not trust any consumer. There's no excuse that would've let MS get out of explaining themselves plainly, so they thankfully backed off from DRM anf always online. It's just sad to see that DRM and practices like it are always just outside of our periphery, waiting to infect a brand at the slightest sign of weakness. Good on gamers/consumers for fighting it though!
Lucipurr I know. I'm more so upset about how gaming companies go on and on about how poor they are and that DRM, along with other shady practices, are necessary for them to stay afloat. Their crying wolf is, sadly, just another hurdle for the consumer to overcome. In MS having to reverse their DRM/always online policy, consumers/fans/critics/etc showed that with their social and monetary currency that they can have an effect on large corps. Thankfully, MS quickly recanted, but the damage was done and they've since taken note.
PS4 doesn't require connection to the internet. Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida interview with Eurogamer: "You can play offline, but you may want to keep it connected. The system has the low-power mode - I don't know the official term - that the main system is shut down but the subsystem is awake. ...yes, yes you can go offline totally. Social is big for us, but we understand there are some people who are anti-social! So if you don't want to connect to anyone else, you can do that."
Well they already have something like 13 exclusives already announced (including games that are console exclusive but also on PC like Planetside 2, and no that's never coming to Xbox One, lol) . Sony have yet to show off the games their prize studio's have been working on for PS4. Historically they've always out produced Microsoft in terms of quantity of first party exclusives. Is that relationship likely to change this generation? Maybe if Microsoft invest enough money, but I can't see it.
i don't know why M$ is giving us more reasons not to buy the next xbox instead of giving us more reason to buy it? i don't think even 100 exclusives can save them. i think the 3 biggest reason's not to buy the next xbox are: 1 - no internet no gaming on the xbox one (mandatory 24hr logings) 2 - you don't own the game(s) you only long term rent it for a high price. 3 - you are forced to use a kinect since the console won't work without it.
Im on my sevent xbox360 the one i currently own cant read disk and it cant go online if thats not bad enough then you should my internet disconnects every 20-30mins im not getting this pocket draining crap anymore im going to save up for a pc and hopefully ask my xboxlive friends to join if i can ever conect what a waste of oppertunity M$ is after wasteing :(
Aren't all your games going to be uploaded to the cloud so that you can play your games and saves from any console? Microsoft needs to be clear about the benefits of the Internet and this new used games model.
Looking back 7 years later Microsoft was completely crushed in this generations console war. And looking at the new Xbox coming out now as compared to the ps5 it’s starting to look like it’ll be the same then too. Microsoft seriously needs to up their game
OMGBONER94, there's no point defending the DRM. All the games I own, I can use them anytime I want, I can lend them my friends, I can sell them etc. We have complete ownership of the games. With the DRM we have no ownership at all.
i'm happy that i been my whole life pc gamer :D but now when it's easier porting games from xbox one and ps4 maybe we shell see some games come to the pc as well.
Sadly in modern games development $1bn isn't that impressive. The Tomb Raider reboot was $100m and Bioshock Infinite topped that figure too. That $1bn in next gen terms gets you your 15 exclusives I'd imagine and not a lot more. It's impressive for MS though as they haven't really gone for the first party exclusives historically, so that's a very welcome change for Xbox fans. For me, I'm out on Xbox One. With their current policies I just can't support a product that doesn't support consumers.
The only comparison to stream i'll accept is the one they used. Xbox has been trying to test out the "sell games for cheaper" model (i've been buying a few of them), but it's true... if steam shuts down your games are gone. YOU ARE right though, in the sense that stream is light years beyond Microsoft in the deals department, but in Microsofts defense, Steam wasn't always that way. Now, I still don't like the idea of all this btw... I'm against this X1 thing but I'm just stating facts.
This is stupid 24 hours offline... Thats forcing ppl to subscribe to a internet provider aside from that if its really 24 hours online the server would read u appearing offline (if u are) then it will be suspend as it states
The reaction has been so hostile, and the bad associations attached to xbox one have already become so ingrained that I really can't imagine any exclusives being amazing enough to dispel all that. They've even cancelled the post event Q&A which shows they're really running scared. And there still is a hell of a lot that needs clarification. I can't recall any other launch that was even close to the level of cack handedness that MS has displayed with xbox one
This whole debacle needs to be studied. The sheer audacity. They thought they could just change such drastic norms in gaming culture. You cant lend a pal your fav game? Incredible that they thought they could just do this. I love Mikes righteous anger. Ive never seen him speak so quickly and passionately. Hes heated and it shows how ridiculous Microsoft was being and how ludicrous it was that they could change gaming like this.
Been gaming since the mid 80s with the NES and Master System. I hate all this DRM with the Xbox One. I can still run all the games I own from 25-30 years. With Xbox One we don't even own the game anymore. Looks that I would be buying Xbox One.
Plus we should not be charged to pay for full price of games on Xbox One. We don't own the games, we just pay for access to them. It's like a renting service. Once Xbox One services is switched off or stopped being supported, you will not able to play your already purchased library. Awful.
PS4 already confirmed no DRM, but.....leaving the decision to the "publishers", then, how are the game publishers let one console required DRM, and not the other? ..everything smells to fishy.....
Oh well. I guess there's always the OUYA. If myself one month ago could see my now self type that, he'd have punched me. But he hasn't seen the horrors that I have.
how do you know that ps4 might do the same, they havnt announced nothing about that yet accept gameplay features and such, ima stick with the current gens consoles for now.
not only are there wifi interruptions that some one can suffer from but also sorry to say but there are those who don't have wifi at all. I know I don't have any attached to my Xbox 360 because I can't afford it so to me in a way they're losing customers and to be honest I personally prefer discs I mean there's nothing like the look of that huge shelf collection of games when you walk into your room. I think that this is all a complete complicated mess. I'll be the old hag here and say leave things as they are!
The question is, how fragile is that license? If you only have to have a working disc, or a viable copy on your harddrive, then it's rather reliable. If you have to check in every time you play, it's only as reliable as your internet connection & their servers.
I feel (as a long standing supporter of the xbox line of consoles) that microsoft has taken a step in the wrong direction with all this. I genuinely cannot see myself buying the console, irrespective of games, price or the magical cloud computing it supposedly does.
This video is funny, because many hours later Jack Tretton of Sony went on stage at E3 and said there'll be no DRM and that they'll support used disc based games lol!
At the time they totally destroyed Microsoft!
i wish microsoft will be destroyed
I love how many old videos YT has been recommending to me and I have already seen most of these as I came to the channel pretty early so seeing these old ones its really nostalgic as I am really not the same guy I was in June 2013 and I'm sure you guys are not the same either. Time flies my friends
I like discs and collectors editions and stuff! It's quite satisfying to have a shelf of games sitting there for me to casually browse when I don't know what I want to play
Somehow this was a suggested video. It's weird seeing you so young, and that the video has only 34 thousand views
I love how Mike's utter intellectual dominance just came exploding out in this video.
They're all so smart, it just doesn't always come across when they're taking the piss out of ride to hell retribution or something lol
Not to mention the requirement of a broadband connection restricts a whole area of people that don't have a regular internet in countries or people who can't afford to have broadband on a regular basis. It will also turn the device into a brick when the service is discontinued.

Gaming culture wouldn't be as good if game stores shutdown . Midnight releases , bonus content ,etc would all be gone
A shame.
so if u buy a game at target, play it, use that "code," u might not be able to trade it back in with the receipt?
100% agree with Mike about the 24 hour check in nonsense; it's totally unfeasible to expect everyone to have a connection guaranteed to be up every day forever, without bricking the console. This could be a deal breaker for me and my broadband connection is faultless.
Also buying it, i still think MS need to remove the 24 hour check. A once only activation is all you need.
PS4 doesn't even require that.
Can someone clear something up for me? What happens if you don't turn the console on after 24 hours of having it off? What if you're on Holiday?
Whoa, angry Jane! Impressive. Seriously, great show guys, respect your honesty. As someone who usually buys new & doesn't trade these measures don't affect me directly. However I appreciate that it does affect many, many people. I want an X1 to play exclusive new games but even for me this all leaves a sour taste. It was exciting, now it's just depressing.
I can see Mikes point I moved and had like 2 weeks without internet. If I had to check in every day I would be hooped.
Apparently you can't post links on UA-cam... D'oh!!! The video is called "Dualshock 4" if you find it buddy, pause it at about 2:30, you'll see there it says the PS4 Eye is sold separately and thus one would assume optional.
Differeance between steam is that you can play them all offline and is always present on an open platform which will never be discontinued.
I think that a better alternative to an Internet connection every 24 hours is that you would be required to put the disc for the game you want to play to verify that you haven't sold it

in tesco's and asda's in the UK it is £35 or £40 for xbox live 12 moth membership.
if the price does go up it will most likely only be £50 or £55
I am not a fan of needing to always be on and the Kinect. I think I will stick with the 360 and PC games. Thank you guys for the info and video
I love how honest and X Box centric channel is being about how bad Microsoft is handling this next gen console.
What happens if i go on holiday? Do i need someone to both look after ky cat and my xbox?
I love the fact that, even though you work for outside xbox, you arn't afraid to air your true opinions. I realise you have to keep a brave face up, but its so refreshing to hear your actual opinions about the xbox one. you guys are great
This was a very interesting conversation and it truly makes you think where the video gaming industry is going in the future. Good job mates.
I own an xbox360 that hardly ever connect it and the only time i do connect online when i need to download a dlc or new update fix
If you tell the customer they are wrong, they will go elsewhere. Good luck Microsoft, I wish you a good E3.
that are going to cost allot more or are only exclusive for those particular places (or i could be wrong)
Another thing .... at least you guys and girl (woman) have made it more understandable for me .... Thanks :)
there are more consoles coming out soon as well, like they forgot to mention the steambox or the ouya consoles. You will be able to play PC games on the steambox so anything you buy off steam is playable on this console
Just had to highlight how well this comment aged. ;)
Ah, I remember this. We were all telling ourselves that Sony would have to introduce something similar to the used game controls. We didn't even think about the price as obviously Microsoft wouldn't make the same mistake Sony did with the PS3.
Happy memories.
I'm just hoping Sony remembers this for the PS5, and keeps a similar approach with no DRM or need to connect online
I live in IL county and only play on weekends so how's that going to work. I'm getting my xbox one dering Christmas
the good thing about no trade ins (on pc &steam anyway) because devs arent loosing money through trade ins on pc, they can afford to do the massive discounts you see on steam all the time, perhaps if on consoles they do the same you will get the 75% offs? i would rather get massive discounts than £5 off a new game.

It doesn't seem that bad except the 24 hour check in. Alot of people don't have an internet connection and 24 hours is a very short period.
I've made a point of talking about the new Xbox with friends and family who are casual or non-gamers - once they were made away of the check-in system & game licensing policy, they were disgusted by it too.
I seen this coming from miles !! once the video game industry start to get "commercial" with preorder deals, online pass, and movies and tv
No that is what's wrong with UA-cam comments, first you're assuming he somehow knew he wasn't going to like the video before he watched it but watched it anyway.

The 24 hour thing doesn't bother me since I only play online
So will my new shiny games console not play games if i don't check in every 24hrs?
It hasn't been this bad since the red ring of death.
It does sound little bit like you guys are hugely unconvinced by this new Xbox - which I share after all I have read. The one glimmer of light is that they change the rules of engagement with regard to check-in and perhaps shed more light on Kinect-gate.

Also read Michael Gapper's tweets from the last few days. He's spot on with his opinions.
Pretty glad to own a good PC right now ^.^
They've lost my family as customers and we've owned 4 of their consoles so far. Really sad
agreed. in addition, all of my Aussie mates are also changed to PS4 or to PC
They used to. Not anymore though.

i don't know why M$ is giving us more reasons not to buy the next xbox instead of giving us more reason to buy it? i don't think even 100 exclusives can save them.
i think the 3 biggest reason's not to buy the next xbox are:
1 - no internet no gaming on the xbox one (mandatory 24hr logings)
2 - you don't own the game(s) you only long term rent it for a high price.
3 - you are forced to use a kinect since the console won't work without it.

If Sony does the same thing then what would you say?
I'm hoping they remember this for the PS5 launch, and retain offline functionality and lack of DRM

Some people don't pay for Live because they either don't care about online play or they think they should't pay for it, they do exist!
Yah if this as to be onlin, shouldnt xbox live be free this time round?
Got any proof of that ?
I'll be honest, there's nothing Microsoft can pull off now in terms of games that's going to make me interested in this system
It all sounds like something born from the partnership with EA
Or, you know, cover gaming in general. For whenever both the PlayStation and Xbox brands might fade away at some point :P?
Short Answer: YES.
Microsoft said that they'll have some special Xbox One for Army bases and places that can't have internet
I have mixed feelings about the xbox one but if they announce killer instinct at e3 then I'm sold.
Back to the good old days with sony and nintendo
you've never own any game on any system you only own the License for the game. it the Developers game
The question is, how fragile is that license? If you only have to have a working disc, or a viable copy on your harddrive, then it's rather reliable. If you have to check in every time you play, it's only as reliable as your internet connection & their servers.
I agree maybe the checking should be 1 month other then that I am 100%happy with the Xbox One.
The are part of The Gamer Network ("Eurogamer", "Rock, Paper, Shotgun" and others)
I feel (as a long standing supporter of the xbox line of consoles) that microsoft has taken a step in the wrong direction with all this. I genuinely cannot see myself buying the console, irrespective of games, price or the magical cloud computing it supposedly does.
So is IGN, Machinima, BBC, Twitter, youtube etc etc. These guys used to work for OXM and do InsideXbox. Now they are just a regular 3rd party
This Channel is still so underviewed
to be honest I don't believe it will be that bad for used games. If its 2o dollars for it that's stupid but 5 maybe 1o. Sure why not
