Under the command of American Captain John C Lee and German Major Josef Gangl the castle was defended by less than 30 German and American soldiers together with the French former prisoners of the castle. Together, and with a little help from their Sherman Tank ”Besotten Jenny” who was placed at the main entrance they managed to hold the 100-150 men strong Waffen SS unit at bay until they were relieved by the allies.
Besotten jenny was destroyed during the battle by a waffen SS 8.8 flak cannon , only the radio operator was in the tank when it was hit and he got out safely.

the germans and Americans worked together in WW2, it was the Nazi's everyone was fighting against, the germans and the SS/Nazi's where 2 different armies, they actually never really worked together except in 1 mission but yeah.
I'm not sure if this is intentional but that line, "American troops and the German army", kinda characterises how each country portrayed its people. The US is democratic, which in theory means everyone can be represented. Similarly, the line says "troops" plural, as it's about the people. Meanwhile, Germany at the time was fascist. That has a lot of emphasis on serving the country as a whole. The line says "army" singular, because it talks about the group. The state is more important than the individual people. Idk though, maybe I'm looking too far into it.

Less than 30 men held off 150 SS soldiers and only suffered 5 casualties and the loss of Besotten Jenny (which was only occupied by the radio operator at the time of its destruction, who made it out unharmed), while the SS lost dozens of men and about 100 were taken prisoner.

WW2 had such an impact on our nation that three Generations were named after it - and even today, 74 years after the surrender we still use to refer to it as "The War" - and everyone knows immidiately which war is meant.

This was the battle, where the Germans finally looked up from their war-drunkeness, and said "oh my God, what have we done?! It's over, we are done, no more! we either quit now or we will all die foolishly!"
Not exactly. The war-drunken ones stayed just as drunk as they had been, that was the SS. Joseph Gangl, the Wehrmacht officer that worked together with the Americans, had been in the german army before the Nazis took power, and did what he saw as his duty to his country. And when the war turned against , he saw his duty in protecting the civilians. And towards the end, he promised his men that he'd get them through all of it alive. He had made contact with austrian resistance fighters a while before the battle, exactly due to that reason. They stayed in the region around Itter even though the rest of the German army was retreating, because they knew that otherwise, the SS would move in and kill anyone trying to surrender to the Americans. For the same reason, he and his men teamed up with the Americans to help the former prisoners in Castle Itter, as the SS was gearing up to attack it. Motives can be extremely simple and understandable, even those of people on the enemy side.
We should all remember the heroic actions of John C "Jack" Lee jr, the civilians, the German soldiers, the U.S. troops, and the sacrifice of Josef Sepp Gangl.

They togheter hold a fucking castle on a hill, togheter with some freed flamboyant armed French prisoners. Overhwelmed and holding togheter, combining each others combat tactics, lots of language misunderstanding, and distrust that developes into friendship, fighting and dying until the allied armies arrives and the nazi government officially surrenders. This movie would have fucking broken the cinema. It could have been the best summer Action/Comedy/Drama of the year, and instead we get transformers. HOLLYWOOD YOU ARE CLUELESS.
I don`t think it was about giving it an "overwhelming name" like "the razorblade" or something hilarious ^^ It`s more a sign of personal connection to a trusted piece of warfare metal, that maybe had saved their asses before several times. It was maybe just "their girl" and besotten because she might have made her way stubbornly despite harsh conditions. Just guessing.
TBH, without minimizing Gangl's merit and sacrifice or anything, I think the Kurt-Siegfried Schrader (the SS officer who took part in the defense against the other SS) merits as much credit. The guy was actually wounded and in hospital, but when he was told that the castle is undefended and in danger that the marauding regiment of SS in the area might drop by and execute the prisoners, he put on his uniform and went back to the castle to organize the defense. He opened the armoury, armed the prisoners, and it was also he who sent the messenger that eventually found Gangl. So, yeah, I guess not all SS were murdering psychos. Though, on another note, I wonder exactly how the guy sent to ask for help defending the castle against the SS, ended up telling a Wehrmacht Major (Gangl) about it. I mean, if you want to get help against some Germans, asking a German officer where you can find the Americans isn't exactly the most obvious choice, is it? Especially in a town that was, as Gangl told him then, full of the murderous kind of SS that were busy making example of people and generally were exactly those that Schrader was afraid would drop by to execute the prisoners too.

Sherman’s were known to get disabled, be repaired, and be back on the front line in a couple weeks. They also were arguably the safest tank to be in as while they would get disabled fairly easily (compared to heavier tanks), some or all of the crew usually made it out of the tank and would be right back on the front lines when their tank was repaired.

the germans and Americans worked together in WW2, it was the Nazi's everyone was fighting against, the germans and the SS/Nazi's where 2 different armies, they actually never really worked together except in 1 mission but yeah.

I'm not sure if this is intentional but that line, "American troops and the German army", kinda characterises how each country portrayed its people.
The US is democratic, which in theory means everyone can be represented. Similarly, the line says "troops" plural, as it's about the people.
Meanwhile, Germany at the time was fascist. That has a lot of emphasis on serving the country as a whole. The line says "army" singular, because it talks about the group. The state is more important than the individual people.
Idk though, maybe I'm looking too far into it.

No Accually Mostly the Entire German army Was at the siege, and all countries referred to their Military Forces then as The Army. It wasn't till later in the year that German Branches were added and its term changed to military

People forget that Schloss Itter was also the only battle where American forces fought inside a castle.

Madd Hatter Gaming this is also known as the strangest battle of WWII, as German soldiers (including a lone SS defector who had befriended the French prisoners), American soldiers, a lone teenage Austrian resistance member, and former French prisoners fought side by side against the SS, and a French Tennis player was able to vault the castle’s walls, run past SS checkpoints and ambushes to deliver a desperate message for help to American troops, which were immediately given permission to rescue those still holding out in the castle.
4 wehrmacht soldiers were injured and Gangl was killed when he was moving the former French prime minister to safety.
Less than 30 men held off 150 SS soldiers and only suffered 5 casualties and the loss of Besotten Jenny (which was only occupied by the radio operator at the time of its destruction, who made it out unharmed), while the SS lost dozens of men and about 100 were taken prisoner.
In Germany we simply call them "Kriegsgeneration" (Generation War) as opposed to "Vorkriegsgeneration" (Generation Pre War) and "Nachkriegsgeneration" (Generation Post-War - you'd be refering to them as Baby-Boomers). WW2 had such an impact on our nation that three Generations were named after it - and even today, 74 years after the surrender we still use to refer to it as "The War" - and everyone knows immidiately which war is meant.

This was the battle, where the Germans finally looked up from their war-drunkeness, and said "oh my God, what have we done?! It's over, we are done, no more! we either quit now or we will all die foolishly!"

Joseph Gangl, the Wehrmacht officer that worked together with the Americans, had been in the german army before the Nazis took power, and did what he saw as his duty to his country. And when the war turned against , he saw his duty in protecting the civilians. And towards the end, he promised his men that he'd get them through all of it alive.
He had made contact with austrian resistance fighters a while before the battle, exactly due to that reason.
They stayed in the region around Itter even though the rest of the German army was retreating, because they knew that otherwise, the SS would move in and kill anyone trying to surrender to the Americans. For the same reason, he and his men teamed up with the Americans to help the former prisoners in Castle Itter, as the SS was gearing up to attack it.
Motives can be extremely simple and understandable, even those of people on the enemy side.
Good thing this was final journey of such horrible period in history, instead of letting Churchill continue it.

Greetings German brethren from America, I’d like to thank your ancestors for helping us that day.
German army begging the american enemie soldiers to help them defend a german village who is wanting to surrender, from being purged by a large fanatic SS divison. They togheter hold a fucking castle on a hill, togheter with some freed flamboyant armed French prisoners. Overhwelmed and holding togheter, combining each others combat tactics, lots of language misunderstanding, and distrust that developes into friendship, fighting and dying until the allied armies arrives and the nazi government officially surrenders.
This movie would have fucking broken the cinema. It could have been the best summer Action/Comedy/Drama of the year, and instead we get transformers. HOLLYWOOD YOU ARE CLUELESS.

I don`t think it was about giving it an "overwhelming name" like "the razorblade" or something hilarious ^^ It`s more a sign of personal connection to a trusted piece of warfare metal, that maybe had saved their asses before several times. It was maybe just "their girl" and besotten because she might have made her way stubbornly despite harsh conditions. Just guessing.

TBH, without minimizing Gangl's merit and sacrifice or anything, I think the Kurt-Siegfried Schrader (the SS officer who took part in the defense against the other SS) merits as much credit. The guy was actually wounded and in hospital, but when he was told that the castle is undefended and in danger that the marauding regiment of SS in the area might drop by and execute the prisoners, he put on his uniform and went back to the castle to organize the defense. He opened the armoury, armed the prisoners, and it was also he who sent the messenger that eventually found Gangl.
So, yeah, I guess not all SS were murdering psychos.
Though, on another note, I wonder exactly how the guy sent to ask for help defending the castle against the SS, ended up telling a Wehrmacht Major (Gangl) about it. I mean, if you want to get help against some Germans, asking a German officer where you can find the Americans isn't exactly the most obvious choice, is it? Especially in a town that was, as Gangl told him then, full of the murderous kind of SS that were busy making example of people and generally were exactly those that Schrader was afraid would drop by to execute the prisoners too.
Gangl and his unit actually joined the Austrian Resistance and already stopped taking orders from Berlin days before the battle.
So they had, but still, how would the guy they sent for help know?

Cringey Player So Keep On Playing idk where, but I heard that she was repaired and was on display somewhere. Sherman’s were known to get disabled, be repaired, and be back on the front line in a couple weeks. They also were arguably the safest tank to be in as while they would get disabled fairly easily (compared to heavier tanks), some or all of the crew usually made it out of the tank and would be right back on the front lines when their tank was repaired.
