I love the 80’s because of the simpler upbeat nature of most of the music. Drum machines, synthesizers and singers with unique sounding voices. Annie Lennox, Billy Idol, Blancmange. etc. I was still stuck in the 70’s and 60’s a little back in the 80’s. I missed/didn’t get into some of the popular Bands at the time. I’m 65. I loved MTV! I loved (and still do) Live Aid. Thanks! 🎻🙂😎

A surprisingly diverse list & these are the outliers. Good to see Nick Cave , Leonard Cohen , The Psychedelic Furs , Bow Wow Wow & The Slits & punk rock like Minor Threat & Black Flag represented.

Loved the thumbnail! Class of 1986 so I could relate to a lot of these songs. 😊

Hi Larry- i am so happy that at least Rolling Stone recognized a band from my home country New Zealand- “The Clean”- with ‘anything could happen’- you said you hadn’t heard of them. They were popular in NZ in the early 80’s, but have still been recording up to now. They are recognized internationally as pioneers of a certain type of lo-fi indie sound. You should check them out, I recommend their albums “Mr pop” or “modern rock”. Btw, you got Joan Armatrading and Tracy Chapman mixed up….

"Fast Car" is Tracy Chapman, not Joan Armatrading. Their voices do sound similar.

Missing Persons were pretty much all members of Frank Zappa's band, including Terry and Dale Bozzio and Patrick O'Hearn.

Great to see Samantha Fox on the list, but she should be way higher. Massive talent. Hope her big hit makes the top 100.

Not the best decade for mainstream music but great for metal and alternative music. I was a teenager in the 80s and much of the music my friends and I were into was discovered through word of mouth, listening to alternative radio stations or going to independent record stores. I like Ministry but I have never heard of that song listed. Agree with you about 99 Luftballons - the German version is the best.

I consider myself a HUGE fan of 80's music. I even have my own top 1,000 list from the 80's. I am shocked at the number of songs/artists I did not know. Some felt like "fashion picks". Others like Bon Jovi "Wild In The Steets" = COME ON, REALLY? We are digging out a "deep cut" from "Slippery When Wet?" I am sure there are plenty of people who would look at my picks and say "give me a break". That is the beauty of music, to each his own. Can't wait for the top 100. Also, I do understand that some of these picks were bands from other countries. I may have not been exposed to their music.

Ok. Just saw 156 - “I Melt With You”…….156????.. Seriously??? This would be one of the very first songs that would come to mind when talking about songs at all from the 80s, never mind great songs! I think it’s a great song and should easily be in the top 5 if not at the very top. Not just still listenable but will always be listenable and still immediately remind you of the 80s.

I'm not familiar with a lot of the groups or songs in this list, and I was pretty up on the music scene during the '80s because I was in my 20s during the entire decade. I'd bet a lot of the groups on this list were pretty much unheard of in North America, even at the height of their popularity. I do know Girlschool was peripherally connected to Motorhead, and even recorded with them as the aggregation HeadGirl. Other than that, same highly questionable Rolling Stone crap.

There was some good music in the 80's Larry,it wasn't by favorite decade music wise by a longshot but there definitely was some good stuff there,it was a very synth dominated decade rather then guitar oriented decade in the 80's. Bob

What's a Debbie Deb? Weird list. Too spread out over genres, as if there was pressure to include everything. Some of the bands I like but I like different songs. Maybe we'll see them in part 2.

Cry For Love Iggy Pop. Dance with Me Lords of New Church, Goo Goo Muck Cramps, Never get Old, Sinead O, are likely forgotten by R$' s contrite, calculated bull$*#@. PS, That Summer Feeling Jonathan. Honorable: Killing Joke, Alien Sex Friend, Dead Kennedy's Boomtown Rats Galaxie 500, Ian Dury, Wall of Voodoo, to name a few. No Siouxsie?! Im gutting my abdomen now.

Ministry used to be a synth band in the early 80s.

I went through this list, and to be honest, I don't think I've heard over half of these songs (and never heard of about 20% of the artists).
Also, the list lost all credibility by including "We Didn't Start the Fire" by Billy Joel, which has got to be one of the WORST songs ever recorded. Also, their number one pick is absolutely ridiculous. And furthermore, WAY too much rap crap in the top 20. God, Rolling Stone sucks.
