@@Donnagata1409 seriously, this series is probably the best blend yet, curious what problems you have with this one. Also, Discovery, much maligned by the ultra conservative canon wanking incel crowd, I quite liked it. I’m open to a range of interpretations of the “Universe”, yet so totally done with everything TOS, other than it being seed stock for the rest. It was mediocre at best and much of it complete and utter drek, I forced my self (hoping it would eventually improve) to rewatch the entirety of TOS after 45 years, realizing I’d probably only seen 1/2 to 2/3 of the episodes….. I literally fell asleep through half of them. So what’s your be beef with SNW. Calling it old school seems a stretch to me, other than vague similarities of the main characters, some attempt to stay “true to canon”, which I frankly don’t give a rats ass about ….

He is super interesting, especially now that we know their dad really was first officer on the _Kelvin._ It was great to see Hemmer again. This episode really balanced all of the plots and subplots really well. And the way Kirk and Spock met was really interesting. But I like that it was just two people at a bar. Sure he is not exactly like previous Kirks, but those Kirks have already been done, so it is okay to try something new. He still has many of Kirk's traits like being a leader, having great ideas, great in conversation, and heroic coming to Uhura's rescue in this episode, and excellent dialogue with Uhura and La'an. It took awhile to accept this Kirk as he started out different than Chris Pine and Shatner in their swagger and style, but he is certainly interesting enough. I would like to see more episodes with him. Great review of this episode, Jessie!

Also Uhura's smile at the end watching Kirk and Spock meet. As a firm proponent of the T'Pring-Chapel-Spock-Kirk love square, I know that smile. She knew what she was doing. And it makes sense, because if anyone on the Enterprise could be a busybody matchmaker, it'd be the communications officer since she can eavesdrop on all the juicy tea, and at the right moment just subtly nudge her OTPs together.

The scenes with the Kirk brothers were great and I liked the explanation about Sam not using the George Kirk name. Also they had Kirk meet Pike who was temporarily promoted to fleet captain a good call back. Celia Rose Gooding delivered a great performance and her friendship with Kirk worked well. Plus the scene at the end where Kirk and Spock meet casually knowing the friendship they'll have was great since that's often how so many real life friendship start. The bit about Patel giving Una a C on her paper was funny and then the acknowledgement of how hard it can be when you loose someone you work and then a new person arrives to fill their spot was great.

We're seeing the start of OUR crew. I am so glad that the producers of the show are meta enough to realize that we are very much Una in this episode, and that we shouldn't think of Pellia as a replacement. Yet we're also Nyota and that we have trouble saying goodbye and I am glad that we actually got this chance and what a way to bring Bruce back I'm hoping that we get to see more of him as another character because he is a fantastic actor and very much part of the Star Trek Family. Speaking of the new chief engineer the more that I see her before I absolutely love her character. This was everything that I wanted from a Kirk before he takes command of the Enterprise. We've got a bit of that arrogance we've got the self-insuredness of somebody who knows that he's on the fast track to being one of the youngest captains in the fleet. We have the little brother who is looked up to because he seems to be following their father's career path. And we have the sympathetic friend and consummate Explorer. Would it have been nice to see more of La'an and Kirk, yes but it seems like the writers are very much setting up a parallel between that story and the Spock Chapel story( we don't want true dinners cat to actually be dead). And I think that that is a smart way to play it given the fact that we know where three of these characters end up emotionally throughout the next 30 Years. I also like that they didn't make a big deal about Kirk meeting Pike( I know that there are some that are going to be worried about a Canon violation but I personally do not see it as such since he would have had to have met Pike at some point for pike to even consider him for captain of the Enterprise)... and we know from Pike's experience last season that he knows the type of man that Kirk is and that Kirk may have a bigger destiny( even though his older self did not tell him specifics). I do also love that this is the second instance of Kirk's prowess in chess being shown, since we know what that in a few years time perk himself will say that his first officer plays an irritating game. Also I do rather love this symmetry of two timelines where Kirk and Uhura meet at a bar

I loved this episode and this season for exploring each of the characters. I let out the ugliest guffaw at the callback to Spock's feelings about Sam's mess. Also, it's a small detail and why representation matters: Uhura was wearing a durag while she slept. As a Black (American) person, that is such a cultural thing that gets overlooked. Either the hair gets covered or we sleep on a silk/satin pillowcase to protect our hair because it's naturally drier. I've watched so many movies and tv shows with Black characters, especially on a big network, where this detail is overlooked or ignored. When I saw it (and the other time in season 1), I feel seen. Also, Paramount really should come out with some Starfleet durags and hair bonnets. I'd snap one up in heartbeat!
NOTE: I can't speak to non-US cultural practices among the Africa and the African diaspora re protective coverings during sleep

Two comments, both about Jim Kirk.
First, his concern about and support for Uhura was exemplary, and his inspirational speech to Uhura about not letting Death win was one for the ages and should be celebrated.
Second, at the end of the show, his not understanding that after Sam congratulated him, Sam was looking for him to return the complement, since Sam had been the one to put forward the theory about interdimensional aliens in the warp fuel, and thus deserved credit for helping come up the solution.
If I was Sam, I would have gotten fed up with Jim at that point and walked away myself.

What can I say. I loved this episode. I loved the final scene, with Uhura introducing Kirk and Spock....My little fan girl (who read to many slash fic back in the day) went pitter patter. I love that Uhura is coming into here own, from last season "teen" Uhura into becoming more adult. La'an's scene with Kirk was a little heartbreaking. I have to say that the writing on this show is probably the best writing in all of star trek, even the original..... I like that the stories are given time to breathe. The plot being pushed to the back a little was okay with me, the plot in a way didn't matter as much as the character development. I like this kirk because, IMHO, he aligns with the Kirk on TOS a little more. He is a risk taker, but he is able to listen.

"Right now...death is winning!" Kirk's insight is powerful. When Death claims a loved one...the pain of grief almost compels us to allow their memory to fade or to turn away from recalling them because the pain is so great. Kirk says...defy death's push to render us truly invisible to the world. That the aliens themselves are "invisible" is not as subtle a metaphor as it seems. We are always compelled to retreat from the moments that hurt the most...but those moments, that we endured them, that we rose again despite them, are the hallmarks our strength and our character. They are the growing pains of life...to arrive at that place of knowing that life carries unavoidable pain and we embrace life nonetheless. Every "Hello" in life inherently carries a good-bye...every meeting ... a farewell...and every love...eventually...the heartbreak of an undesired end...either by departure, by death, by betrayal, by distance...etc.

I really enjoyed this episode when I finally got around to watching it. The fact it was part psychological horror, part exploration of grief, part background on Kirk and getting to see a good amount of firsts for him in the timeline. Uhura being the lead was really welcomed and I'm really glad that this show, and especially this season, is allowing for the rest of the crew to get the spotlight to help explore them more. We just need a solo Ortegas episode to finish the cycle (I have not finished this season yet so I don't know if there has been one lol)

Weird coincidence: I have been in a mood lately to reread certain Star Trek TOS novels, such as The Wounded Sky and The Three Minute Universe. In fact, I grabbed my copy of TMU last night but started reading it after watching this episode. When I took it off the shelf, I didn't pay attention to the cover picture, but when I started to read it immediately after watching the episode I noticed that Uhura and Kirk were on the cover, and the story (which I hadn't read in a few years and forgot about) involves Uhura reliving a past tragedy involving her sister's death.

There was a lot to love here. Uhura's stuff was great and it's so nice to see Hemmer still being a presence for her. Also nice to see her start her friendship with Jim! And save the ship! Sam and Jim's brotherly conflict was also cool to see (Just their dynamic at all really.) Also I love Sam. He just keeps giving everything.
Loved that Spock and Kirk's meeting was downplayed.
Still wondering if they're going to do anything interesting with Spock and Chapel before they break up. Making so much of her stuff about him has hampered the storytelling there, I feel. It's just very uneven. We get so much on Spock and Chapel is... a capable officer who fancies him and we don't have much else so it makes them hard to root for, especially as almost all of their exchanges are about their relationship status.

This episode was about many things .One communication is that the Alien were trying to communicate thru imagery that they will being killed by the refinery. Uhura was seen images of death. Uhura was trying to avoid the feelings of sorrow because of her parents and Hemmer who she became very close to. Una also was avoid these feeling and acted badly toward Pelia who took Hemmer's place. The acting of Gooding was excellent and he meeting James Kirk who helped her in this episode to realize death is part of life and she had to come to grips with in .When Uhura did she realize that aliens were communicating with her .The story is to connected how James Kirk met Pike as a fleet Captain and Uhura and finally he met the most important person that became his friend Mr. Spock. I like it was a casual meeting with them because he took many years to develop a friendship between Kirk and Spock. I like that James and Sam had a very normal relationship and Sam was jealous that James career was on the fast track. Brothers can figure but they still lived as other So when Sam was killed years later James was very hurt All in all I liked this very much. I give it a grade of.B+

Spock and Chapel (who ARE in a... undefined relationship) playing chess but they don't quite click, while Kirk observes from the other side of the bar and proves himself a match for Spock's ability. Plus the way the way the camera significantly held on them when they finally met, sure, it's significant because its a huge piece of canon, but its also shot like they're setting up the first meeting of soulmates (t'hy'la forever)

I think I actually enjoyed this episode most of the season so far. The plot was secondary to the actual story being told of loss and mourning and relationships and I loved how this episode built on all these connections made between different characters earlier in the season and the show as a whole. And how it subtly set up those relationships we already know very well. It was great!

@Jessie Gender After Dark Hello Jessie hunny, I really liked and enjoyed this episode with its character development and emotional tones. I agreed with everything you said about the episode, especially about Hemmer’s character being killed off in the first season. I think many fans really miss his character, so it was awesome to see him in this episode, which made me tear up.
I also found this episode to be quite emotional, which I felt explored the concept of unresolved, suppressed and complicated grief, playing on one’s subconscious. Celia Rose Gooding’s performance was exceptional in this episode and I was happy to see a focus on Uhura.
The conversation that Kirk had with Uhura regarding death was powerful and you could see the subtle hint of Shatners Kirk in Wesley’s acting. I was very interested to see the exploration of the sibling relationship between Sam and his brother as well.
I loved seeing Pelia again as she brings so much freshness and uniqueness to the show.
The one thing that seemed far fetched to me is how Pike took Uhura’s request to destroy the mining station at face value , without finding alternative way as Starfleet would have raised many questions.
And finally, the meeting of Spock and Kirk for the first time, with the camera zooming in on their handshake, made me shed a tear as well. Also, I could hang out in that Enterprise bar all day.

Uh... Nobody else found strange that Pike decided to blow a station only because Uhura told him she was certain? When the last thing he knew about her was that she was hallucinating?
In Star Trek 2009, when Kirk realizes the Narada is behind Vulcan's problems and runs to the bridge to warn it is an attack, Uhura is with him to confirm his assertions, and Spock supports her. Only then Pike orders to take precautions.
In this scene, the Kirks should have informed Pike of what was going on, and/or obtained some kind of scientific proof before running all together to the bridge and *demonstrated* the existence of the deuterium aliens. Speculation does not equal a established fact, even less in a *science*-fiction series.

And they knew something trying communicate Uhura and Ramon

I didn't feel like it entirely fit normal Star Trek tropes for no reason I can articulate, so as such I genuinely felt like anything could happen. I also worked out the answer to the mystery literally seconds before Uhura did and genuinely flipped out when my theory was confirmed because I felt like everything fit so perfectly. it felt a little meandering at times but this is probably one of my favorite episodes of Star Trek in a while

I don't have a lot to say this week except that it was well shot, very well performed by Celia Rose Gooding (Paul Wesley and the rest were solid and Carol Kane's a treasure) and the episode tied up at around the right point. I'm a little cool on the Spock moments of the episode (I don't hate the talk with Chapel, I just...don't feel much of anything for it, and Spock joining Kirk & Uhura at the end just felt like unnecessary fanservice, but I don't begrudge that) and I'm mixed on the La'an moments (given she appears for maybe 3 or 4 minutes total, so she can run into Kirk twice, though well acted and kind of heartbreaking knowing her past).

I really liked the episode. Hoping I will get to watch the remaining episodes, as my situation is still very bad. -- I began guessing the sound was slowed or modified audio somewhere in there, because I've heard slowed and modified audio before in voice recordings. -- Good char development, god Star Trek plot, but how do the two starships move after dumping their deuterium? Lt. Jim Kirk and now Fleet Capt. Pike, this seemed like a good way to involve them, although -- in TOS, I still think the Federation had had only limited contact with the Corn by the Arena episode. I would nee d to rewatch. But I think. I am OK seeing SNW as in its own timeline or canon, not the same as the original. Overall, liking this ep a lot, liking how the characters are coming along for the most part. Having so many characters to juggle, though, tends to leave little time for everyone to have much. I'm too tired for any more in-depth comment. Thanks for Jessies's review.
