I think it's a choice of goal to learn self defense in Aikido and I do believe you can. Not everyone is seeking self purification otherwise people would join a religion and Aikido is not a religion....it is a martial art.
Not a religion and not a martial art; but rather a derivative, something new appeared in the result of evolutional leap. Aikido is a science of Human Nature. This is the claim and the message of the SAA. Sometimes, it takes hundreds of years to discover news. And yes, very few people understand the value of self-purification, otherwise they would be looking for different methods.
I would say that Aikido is a martial art because of the derivatives of the techniques from other arts which O sensei had practiced. Not to mention the emphasis of self control.
