  • We will be arriving at spring soon so I decided on this snowy day to give a run down of a planter vs. a drill for new and beginning farmers. I show a Soybean Special 5400 and a Case 1245 planter. I encourage you to look into a Case 1200 instead of just going with the drill to start. It's all dependent on your goals! I also share about the poor man's shed for those of us who can't yet afford a big equipment shed!

    Brother you can put v set meters on that 1240 and be suprised on the difference in spacing. Case and kinze both are planters that can slide through most anything

      I need to look into those! Yeah I've never used a kinze but I've heard good things about them.

    Love your videos Logan! Someone here starting out from the bottom, lookin for land and just getting equipment. Could you do some type of an explanation of how you scaled from your starting point to where you are now with 1300 acres? Keep doin you man!

    I bought a 1200 a few years ago to plant notill beans with. I have been rebuilding it little by little every year and I have been real happy with it on notill soybeans. Mine has 36000 acres in it and no electric issues yet. And the pivot it pretty tight.

      That is awesome! Super versatile planter. I think I'll probably recommend that to most folks at this point.

    I'm running a John Deere 7000 4 row and a 10' John Deere 750 row cropping between 250 to 300 acres I like the small equipment for our narrow Alabama roads

      It definitely would be easier on the road!

    I love your videos!
    I'm only running a few hundred acres and have had bad experience with custom harvesting. I'm considering an old combine but, just like you, have no shed.
    Please tell us what you recommend for combines starting out in soybeans.
    Also, having bought land with no buildings, and living in Canada, not having a shed is also a big problem for me. Unfortunately, using tarps is very frowned upon here as there is this commonly held belief that humidity gets trapped under the tarp. I might just give it a try for my great plains 24ft seed drill (same as your dad's.)

      Thank you for watching and for the support!
      I just uploaded a new video on 4 combine models I'd recommend starting out with and the price ranges! I hope it offers some guidance.
      As far as the tarp goes I sprayed the blades on my bean header with Fluid Film prior to cover so it kept them lubricated. I didn't have moisture issues and were in a humid environment here. I'd still encourage you to try out the tarp route!

    Well, that soybean special plant grass seed as well? I know the lagoons are a lot bigger than ryegrass seed or wheat grass. Wondering if it could handle that small of a seed

    I am assuming you can plant just about anything with that 5400? Not just soybeans? A 15fter, or smaller of there is one, would make a good foodplot planter.

      @LHFarmsTN  7 місяців тому +1

      Man I'm really not sure, we only ever planted soybeans with it and I believe you'd have a hard time planting any smaller seed with it. For a food plot though where you're not really worried about yield you may could. If you were gonna plant some of those Eagle beans it would be great

      You cannot plant corn.
      As for small seeds, there's an option for a small seed bin on it. Consider the 6200. A small step up from the 5400.

      @oddione step up as in size or is it more versatile on what it can plant?

      @LHFarmsTN What size tractor is needed for a 15ft 5400?

    • @oddione
      @oddione 7 місяців тому +1

      @@barm9687 the 6200 has all the benefits of the 5400 but more features. Both are available in all sizes. The 6200 also allows you to tow it down the road Lengthwise (but you need muscled.)

    What piece of equipment has made you the most money in farming?

    • @kylehanks8305
      @kylehanks8305 7 місяців тому +2

      A planter is one of the most important pieces of equipment on a row crop type farm. Followed secondly by a good combine. If you choose to own one. You gotta plant the crop and you gotta harvest it. The more maintained your planter is the better crop you’ll raise. Same with a combine a wel maintained combine will save you money at the end of the day. Wel maintenance machinery should not be confused with new machinery. You can raise as good of crops with older well maintained machinery

      I would most likely say my planter. Ultimately it all starts with a great stand. You get a great stand then you're already ahead of the pack.
