Brilliant review :) Personally I think M. Night was already beginning to show signs of fatigue in Signs, featuring a draggy plot and the universe's most idiotic aliens. A lot of the ending twists were just there for shock value. BTW, in regards to the Lady in the Water, the critic is the single most popular character amongst anyone who's watched the film.
I think Shyamalan should've played the critic himself in Lady In The Water, instead of Bob Balaban. It would have seemed, I dunno, self-aware? Self-deprecating? Witty? But no, he cast himself as a writer that saves the world... I actually really like Unbreakable, Signs and The Village, so it's a shame to see him flounder for so long. I wish he'd go back to his twist-ending, genre-bending roots.
In terms of the limited story I think they should have at least given Jaden some classmates or peers to have crashed with. I think this added dynamic would have taken the pressure off his performance and allowed him to try some acting with something other than a green screen or his actual father, both of which would surely contribute to such a stilted performance. It's the least they could have done to alleviate the terminal boredom of a child walking through a forest.
The strange thing about this film is that the premise is actually quite interesting, whereas the execution was poor. That's the major difference between this and John Carter (of Mars), where in that film both the premise and execution are beyond dull. I may be mistaken, but when Mark was explaining the story to Simon, he actually seemed interested in the explanation of the narrative, because ultimately it's not that the film's concept is bad, it just takes itself far too seriously.
I've got a lot of time for Will Smith, I think he can be a good actor, but I haven't heard or read a single good review about this film.......shame, I was looking forward to it.
couldn't have put that review better myself mark i went to see after earth with my dad and when it was over my dad whispered to me rubbish and i said yes what a flop of a film one star out of five & 1/10
How this movie got to number 1 in the UK box office I'll never know. The reviews and responses from the US alone a few weeks ago should've told people how bad this movie is and even the trailer looked dull and uninspired. More money than sense gets this movie ticket sales? Always great seeing the good doctor being as hilariously critical of bad movies as he is with brilliantly made flicks. Can't wait for that Man Of Steel review.
Aaaahhh I watched the Bluray last night and if you fast forward a few bits and absolutely turn your nod off its alright. If advanced aliens engineered a creature to sense human fear why not give them some eyesight as well.
It's one of those films we have all seen done better before, but with black heroes. Now we just need one with women as the heroins, and the PC party is complete.
I've been waiting for Kermode's review of this since I first saw the trailer. It was worth the wait! I gave After Earth a miss in favour of The Iceman.
I'm starting to feel sorry for M. Night. He needs to turn back to what was so good about the likes of Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and Signs. These were normal close knit characters going through amazing circumstances. In his recent movies he has thrown away character study, and focused on outlandish science fiction ideas such as The Village, The Happening and Devil. I just hope he returns to his past glory.
This film was laden with bad choices; Will Smith's character was dull and one-note, the film didn't have enough ideas even for its short running time, and the plot wasn't anything redeeming. There was nothing of any value plot-wise. I couldn't even appreciate the relationship between Will & Jaden because Will's sternness was the most alien thing in the movie. If you want a good film about a boy surviving alone in the wild, watch Life of Pi. It's much better & has far more going on.
When will they stop giving M. Night money to make these horrid movies. The Sixth Sense it ridiculously overrated. I figured out the "twist" of Unbreakable in the opening monologue and the movie sucked. The man is a hack director and symptomatic of what is wrong with modern movies, They have all these little toys at their finger tips but the most essential element of imagination has seemed to have become a dying art. No amount of effects make up for an empty story with dull characters.
"M. Night Shameabouthelastfilm"
Bless you, Kermode
Keanu Reeves in "The Day my face stood still" mark is so awesome...!!! :D
I think we all anticipated this review far more enthusiastically than the film.
Not joking, I was woken up by a cinema employee to tell me the movie had finished!
M. Night Shameaboutthelastfilm. HAHAHAHA
A perfect summation of M. Night's career, I have yet to read.
"The Day My Face Stood Still"
Fantastic
The Day My Face Stood Still.
This is why I come here.
Your channel description is awesome

"You will have to retrieve that bacon - or we're going to die"
This is why I love this man. Timeless review.
M. Night Shame-about-the-last-film! Classic!
I think I've found my new favorite movie critic.
Will Smith has lost his zeal in my opinion, I used to seek out his releases as soon as I could but now I am barely curious.
"M. Night Shame about the last film", hahaha. I love his nickames.
You must be so Proud.. Oh not only love your critique guys but your presentation if so entertaining
"The Day My Face Stood Still."

Plot and acting are straight from every old school X-Box game .
M Night Shameaboutthelast film. Brilliant.
"The Day My Face Stool Still". hehe.
And some people say Kermode is devoid of any sense of humor. This review is side-splitting!
"the day my face stood still.." haha
lol at The Day My Face Stood Still.
M. Night Shame-about-the-last-film, classic!
Here we go I have been waiting all week for this....
best rant in a while
Yeah, M Night Shameaboutthelastmovie is the only Shyamalan name-play I've ever found amusing.
2:22 pronounces kilometres correctly
I know he's young but Jaden Smith has got to be one of the most wooden actors I've ever seen.
Just Beyond The Corner Productions haha no way
@@justbeyondthecornerproduct3540 no it isnt wtf are you on. any kid couldve given that performance ..
Even in that little snippet of the video game style briefing I was thinking I would rather be playing it as a game on the PlayStation or some shit.

puns are thick and fast, some real sharp referencing from Dr Kermode
Woe this review is better than the movie
Will Smack.
Always enjoy his reviews. Wish he would discuss more of the horror genre.
Kermode Uncut: Changing My Tune = Lasted a total of 1 vid...!
Did Will Smith make this film entirely to try and make it seem as though his son's lack of charisma was a positive trait for a lead actor.
M Night Shameaboutthelastfilm 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Nice!!
I wish Dr. Kerboat did a Kermode Uncut talking about The Seventh Seal.
Great review by Mark as always.
Well done on the M.Night.Shyamlan pun
Good films can & do turn around your expectations, if they are good.
there is something about nepotism that really bugs me.
Excellent review.
LOL The Day My Face Stood Still.
I love the "whatever" at 0:52. Naughty Kermode.

The batteries are in the tail...and the tail's gawwwwwwwwn!
I don't think we've had a good rant like this in a while.
I've got a lot of time for Will Smith, I think he can be a good actor, but I haven't heard or read a single good review about this film.......shame, I was looking forward to it.
John Carter is the only movie is pretty much disagree with you. Because I really, really found that one entertaining.
After all the bombshells he has made, how is this M Night still finding work?
It can't be quite as bad as the last airbender surely, great rant
'M Night Shamaboutthelastfilm' LOL!
M. Night Shamed by the last film. Brilliant Mark, just brilliant.
Pleeease, somebody make a poster out of THE DAY THE FACE STOOD STILL !!!!

The only M Night Shamalyan film Armond White liked.
Tv several years from now.
Jaden Carter of Earth...witty from the good doctor
I think Will Smith should be getting as much blame as M Night for why this movie doesnt work as Smith is credited as coming up with the story.
Haha..."The Day my Face Stood Still"
The Fritzl's > The Smith's.
Great review! shame about the film, I was hoping it would be ok enough to merit a trip to the cinema. Seems not... :P
If you are gonna watch the movie...fast forward through the first three quarters
Let's be honest, we're all just waiting for Man of Steel to come out!!
Sounds like its going to be the John Carter of 2013 and the final nail in the coffin of a once promising director.
I've been waiting for Kermode's review of this since I first saw the trailer. It was worth the wait! I gave After Earth a miss in favour of The Iceman.
I liked John Carter. Nothing profound but I didn't think it was anything like the trash it was made out to be.
Level A to Level B? Do you play games Mark :P
I was considering watching this movie. Now... I think I might not. Okay, basically, I definitely won't.
troll funniest film review ever
The only good M Night Shamylan movie according to Armond White.
Because the public clearly doesn't give a damn about quality and will literally watch anything.
John Carter is much better than this rubbish. It has better acting, better, special effects, and a better overall story.
This movie just looks and sounds aweful. Such a boring plot and the added annoyance of nepotism thrown in.
Seldom seen more vexing things.
Reverse lost in space with daddy issues?

This movie is about Scientology beliefs.
I am sick of Will Smith handing Hollywood to his kids. This looks worse than Whip My Hair.
MADE ME LAUGH MY ASS OFF! this will be top comment in no time

Nothing like going into a film with an agenda to dislike it
first
I LOVE THAT MOVIE

That is the dumbest most shallow explanation of a movie that I've ever heard/seen.
