Welcome to the grunge genre (although I despise that term as none of the bands packaged as such even sounded alike). Layne Staley (RIP) actually started out as a Funk vocalist and Yes he could belt out some notes!! You also have to check out the vocal quality of Chris Cornell (RIP) from Soundgarden and Audioslave!! Chris Cornell had an almost 5 octave range and could sing with clarity or grit!! Such power!! I'll be 62 years old next month but my Favorite Male Rock Vocalists of all time are (1l Chris Cornell (2) Layne Staley (3) Robert Plant. I could go on because the Rock genre had some Great Great vocalists! Please check out more. Thanks for your reaction. I’m glad you’re enjoying this. Layne was so unique. He seemed to sing the pain into his vocals and just made AIC their own thing musically. It’s sad that someone can put such feeling, so much pain into their lyrics and not find a way out. His pain enhanced the music so deeply that it made it it’s own thing.

As a kid born in the 80s I grew up on his music and to this day he was hands down the best vocalist I've ever heard. The emotion and pain comes thru every time.

When Layne sings, he’s telling a story. And his voice puts every emotion in it. His voice is the most epic of all time. He could do stuff with his voice (without electronics) that were against the laws of physics.

Layne-era Alice In Chains always gives me goosebumps. His voice is magical and the harmonies between Layne and Jerry Cantrell are masterpieces. The guitarist next to him with the long blonde hair is Jerry Cantrell and he has kept the band alive with a new singer but it took years for him to decide to find a new singer.
Best live performance ever. 👏 we miss you layne. Gone but not forgotten. ❤ R.I.P Layne
This whole set was just lightning in a bottle, I can think of no other performance by any band or group that made a better live performance, so hard to watch and listen to any thing from this set because we all know how Layne's story played out and ended, I just hope where ever he is that he has some knowledge and understanding of how many people he managed to touch and save, yes, save, his contributions to the music world saved my life 4 times over, had it not been for Layne and Jerry making some heartbreaking music together I can honestly say I wouldn't be here, love you Sean, Mike, Jerry, and Layne, you saved me when I probably didn't deserve it by any stretch of the imagination.
Finally-someone else who would tap and drink Layne Staley straight from the source-any time day or night! The man is still a fucking god in my eyes. His ending, though, shattered my heart and soul-it is the most tragic tale of a fallen angel that I've ever heard. If there's a hell, then that's where heroin hails from.
Thanks to all the stars, I have lately been winning my war against it-although it certainly did leave me with plenty of deep and painful scars from years of prolonged battle. The fact that Layne was unable to find some way, any way, to tame his demons will haunt me the rest of my days. He is and forever will be sorely missed!

My Love, I'm over the moon about you discovering Layne. I'm always so happy when people discover him and his amazing talent. I know folks like to talk about their love for musicians and how special they are, but Layne really is Special!! His voice is so original, no one sounds like him. The depth of his emotion and raw power always came through in every one of his performances. Even when he was in bad shape, he still gave 100%. I like to say Layne could be in a hospital bed and still out sing and out perform everyone! He was also a beautiful human, both on the exterior and interior. I've read enough about him and no one has ever had an unkind word to say about him. He was a highly sensitive, intelligent man who was very self aware of what he was doing. Sometimes our demons get the best of us. His friends and loved ones adored him. He always chose to hang out with his fans and show his appreciation. He was a genuine down to earth person, the Anti - Rockstar.

Another vocalist that covered Alice In Chains is Dallas Green of City and Color. His cover of “Rain When I Die” is absolutely beautiful. 🖤🖤🖤
Layne Staley, the one and only, one of a kind, unique vocalist and there will never be another like him. I try to sing his songs but there are some notes he hits that I never will.

Was never really a massive Alice in Chains fan, but their entire album "Dirt" is fantastic. Gritty, hard, I like it. The lyrics are all pretty much about Layne's addiction as he's going through it. I also really like Layne's vocals with the Seattle "supergroup" Mad Season, particularly the song "River of Deceit". I used to hang out in a pub near Lake Union area of Seattle and AIC guitarist Jerry Cantrell would come in and sit at the bar from time to time. He stopped showing-up after people always wanted to interrupt him and ask a million questions.
Omg, amazing. I think we all wish we could hear certain things that JUST HIT for the first time again, and so then this kind of genuine, chills, appreciative reaction is the next closest thing to bring back that kind of moment. 🤣 Underwear over there - gotta love it!

When I first got this album in early 90s I had trouble listening to this song in particular just because it was so fucking dark it really brought me down. Through repeated listening though it grew on me and is now one of my favorites. Cheers!

Welcome to the family, my sister. It's awesome to me when i see folks from all different walks of life recognize and get down with true talent. You obviously have good taste, and I'll be subscribing. Alice in Chains is a legendary band in every sense of the word. Some of the darkest and saddest and most powerful and beautiful music ever created. Layne Staleys' voice could rip your heart out or explode with the power of a dying star. The only other singer from that era (or since in my opinion) who was close to his level was Chris Cornell. Both of those men are sorely missed.

Layne was the quintessential front man. He was one of the few vocalists to truly embody the definition of awesome. I don't generally get overly emotional when people I've never personally known die, but his death just broke my heart. It's only been in the past few years that I've finally been able to listen to AIC and enjoy it like I used to. And a big reason for that is because of reactors like you! Thank you for helping find that joy again. ❤

I’ve been an AiC follower since the first time I saw them live (about a year after this was recorded). Your beautiful words and priceless reactions to Layne’s voice (and Jerry Cantrell’s haunting guitar) made my day. I have watched several of your videos and wish more of the world would open their minds and listen. Jerry was a poet and Layne was so passionate. All of that is present in all of their work. the blonde haired guitarist to Layne's left Jerry Cantrell is the one who wrote the lions share of the material for the band and the bassist on Layne's right Mike Starr passed away shortly after Layne did. Mike Inez who you saw in other videos took over on bass when Starr left and Drummer Sean Kinney is still behind the kit. Jerry, Sean and Mike Inez still carry on with a new singer William DuVall who is an amazing vocalist in his own right though not quite Layne. His presence causes a bit of discord amongst fans but I think he is great.
