I’ve have one of these that’s years old. Great tool. I keep it in my truck tool box year around and it has come in handy a thousand times on the ranch. I remember buying it at a garage sale maybe 15-20 years ago for $3. What a great buy.
Just found one in the garage. Been hidden behind some old lumber. Cleaning it up now. Canvas sheath with the booklet/manual. Can't wait to get it sharpened. Great video.
Just picked one up in mint condition with the leather stacked handle at the flea market for $50. I used it as a bargaining chip to get a nice black demon straight razor for $10 instead of $20 as well.
Have been waiting for this one, glad it was on this show
I’ve yet to see anyone use the hook the way it was designed. It is designed to cut saplings and vines growing vertically. Hook it beside the sapling, and pull up. It will slice diagonally through the stem. Wear gloves as it will commonly slap the growth against your hand. Stop using it like a hatchet for limbing. Trust me. Been using one since the 70s when they came with the canvas sheath, and stacked leather handle.
I understand true American Craftsman, but $185 plus shipping. Phewww. I hope someone can shop with them. Might put this on my Christmas list, but then again other wants, dreams, and desires might overshadow a big machete. Thank you Brian.
I loved mine so much, I bought 2 more, one for each vehicle..
LOVE 'EM!!! I bought two!
That is one tool i have wanted for decades being from Pa. I just can 't afford one. Thank you Bryan for sharing with us
Looks like a very useful tool around property and camping. The sheath looks awesome! Wonderful that both blade and sheath are made in America! Great video! Thank you!
Like a kid with a new toy. Enjoy Bryan it's a cool blade.
Just picked one up today for 5 bux at a Yard sale cause she thought it was to bad to be sharpened, but I took care of that with a belt sharpener and a wheatstone. Mines got a wrapped leather scale or handle and a big ole knuckle duster over the knuckles. It's stamped made in Reading Pennsylvania and a Army airborne regiment stamp. Bad boy cuts threw tree's like a bulldozer and that hook is great for limbing.
I want one... I have absolutely no real reason to have one but... that doesn't mean I don't want it! I can clearly see the quality and usefulness of this tool, no doubt about either of those things. Good video as always, thanks.
Got my Woodsman Pal back in the mid 80’s . Leather handle with handle guard, no sheath, paid 25$. Bout 10 years ago got the leather sheath, great tool.
Nice video, Bryan. Back in the day they advertised the "none pointy" end as an impromptu digging tool..they are an awesome "bushcraft" tool but I'd rather have my knife and my camp axe.
Good review. I have always liked this thing
Got to use one once, older had leather handle and knucklegaurd, really liked it for what it is made for.
Great tool to have in an arsenal. Thanks for your review.
Bryan, the hook is not for chopping per se. It is intended to be used to grab limbs, vines, and brush/grasses and pull them and pull cut them. As you can see in your testing it is very hard to swing the hook to get an accurate enough cut to chop with it.
Love you Bryan and all you do, but my OCD was triggered every time you said "Woodsman's Pal". It is even written on the blade, it is called the "Woodman's Pal". Keep up the great work!
Brian I hit LIKE on your videos before I hear you say a word. Your videos are the best. Thank you.
You rock!
Marble's makes something similar. Not as expensive and not made in the US, curious how it would compare in a side by side with that Woodman's pal, my guess is it wouldn't.
As always very enjoyable 🇬🇧
In my opinion these are absolutely amazing and useful survival tools. So ugly it’s good looking (unique).
Good review Brian , thanks for sharing , God bless !
Thanks for watching!
Expensive for a billhook, I'd pick up an Rinaldi for much less.
I am wanting to get one of the old Signal Corps models with the hand guard. Saw one at the antique store recently for $160 and it sold quick.
This isn't just a billhook. It is more of an axe than a machete. It is not thin and is not supposed to flex. It is designed to work as a knife, axe, scythe, draw knife and super heavy machete.
I have one from before the company was sold to whoever owns it now. Mine is the leather stack handle with the gaurd. It's very useful on my property, stays in the 4wheeler and gets used daily. Great for what it's meant for, horrible for what it's not.
The original company was Victor Tool in Reading Pennsylvania,in the 80’s & 90’s it was produced by S.E.Co Oley Pennsylvania,ProTool Pottstown Pennsylvania now it’s produced in Malvern Pennsylvania by Skyline ToolWorks
I have one and it's great for its purpose. The hook is not for chopping though. Place the hook at the base of a vine or sapling and pull up. If it fits inside of the hook it can be cut.
got a few PAL 36 org WW2 knives they are great and as this is going back to 1941 mil spec, so for collectors this will be great even with the price $$
The military version was my first exposure back decades ago. Have been meaning to pick one up regardless of the price because of how well it’s made. I’ve just been procrastinating on which one to purchase. Still haven’t made up my mind. :(
The leather stack handle also has a "D" guard to protect your hand.
Great tool, I have several older models. However, since the new owners took over, they doubled the price for same tool. It's no longer affordable. Sad to see such a great tool priced out of the market for the common man...
They also brought 100% of the manufacturing back to the USA.
I didn’t buy one when they were $79 when I was young. I thought it was a neat idea but for $79 , at that time, I could I could get a good hatchet and other equipment. Can’t remember just what I bought.
Good practical tool. We have one my wife inherited from her father, simple wood handle and zippered canvas sheath. Some of the actual WWII issue models with the open face snap-in scabbard also had a bevel on the tip to facilitate use as a shovel; they had stacked leather and a D-guard handle. In a way I’m saddened that they’ve chosen the high priced “pride of ownership” or “collectible” marketing strategy; I consider these a simple hard use tool. BTW many folks use the hook more for grabbing and moving brush than cutting it.
I think the reason they chose the path they did is because they wanted to return to 100% Made in the USA and differentiate themselves from all the low priced copies out there.
I wonder what Dave at Reallybigmonkey1 (on UA-cam) would think of this thing?? He is a machete, saw, knife guy. You should send it to him and have him do a review. Cheers!!
I would have liked to see you try some baton work. This is a bushcraft thing that is often needed.
It would be fine. But this is not really a "bushcraft" tool.
@@SurvivalOnPurpose I beg to differ. In my opinion, a bushcraft situation often requires clearing a place to set up and build a camp. This tool screams for this purpose. One of my bilhooks has a saw in place of the long blade this one has. Between the two types tools, two of us were able to clear and make camp near Valdosta, Ga. in under four hours. Yes, I get down your way sometimes. I have family there.
How long is that? I’m thinking a survival tool for my motorcycle saddlebags. If I had to build a fire. Clear brush ect?
17" overall
Anyone have the best way to sharpen it right and proper?
No Rotational test 😥 . Well that's OK, I like the looks of it anyway, and the versatility.
I agree that it is a good tool, I also agree with the comments, pricey! I have acquired mine from another company. Instead of a wooden handle, mine have mycarta.
Care to tell us what brand and where you found it?
@@brianfolding40 I got them at a farm supply store in Chico California. Don’t remember the brand
Thanks Bryan; I think a good decision not to rotate and balance test this one.
Thanks for the video.
Very interesting woodsman tool for sure.
If you get a chance, can I make a suggestion?
Take a look at the BPS Adventurer Knife made in Ukraine.
If you haven't done a review on it, I highly recommend it.
Thanks again for all the knife stuff.
Cheers
Is that your laugh I hear on the tik tok ad?
Check out DBad Big Jim
It's a BIG knife that I think you would like, Brian
Wow that price is awful. No way would I pay that for what it is. If it were around $100 to $125. Maybe. I'd buy another Esee junglas for that cost.
Different strokes.
@@SurvivalOnPurpose yeah I get it. Don't get me wrong. Would love to have one for my addiction and my collection. But too far outta my budget in this crap economy. I do appreciate it being made in America. Just sucks when you can't afford shit.
This tool will last for decades of heavy use w/ minimal care. You will lose it before it fails you (or it gets stolen). I use this tool every year to cull my property line.
@@haljordan9160 as will an Esee.
I watched.
Yeah ... been around for a long cool minute. Solid, good sh*t ... but *WAY* overpriced, for the context of the materials.
That's just my opinion.
I could be wrong. ✌🏼
I don't like it, bolo style at the end would be great.
Dang! They’ve tripled the price!
Apparently a company named Pro Tool Industries manufactured this tool from 1999-2018 under license from the current owners (Skyline Toolworks)of the design and trademark. Pro Tools kept cutting corners trying to compete with cheapo Chinese knock-offs and the quality suffered until Pro Tools went out of business. So the Skyline decided to return to the original Made in the USA quality.
