Your cat is so cute!!! Our neighbor just lost a cat from an eagle swooping in and taking her. My cats, I use an indoor cage, attached it to our house, and they can access it thru a window. I wont have to worry about the hawk I see, every evening, swooping in to take one of my feline friends. Also, I have raccoons, and two years ago, one climb inside our fenced area that had my poodle. An attack occurred, and the raccoon won. We had to put down our poodle. (RIP) Thus, I worry about other animals and how to 'deter' them from entering my property and getting to my cats and poodle I have now. Especially the animals that fly in.... Omg my husband and I have been racking our brains to find something to stop our cat going over the wall. This is absolutely fantastic. I’ve put aluminium food wrap on with duct tape, stoped her from going out , but I will definitely get some of those 🇬🇧🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌😁🙏🏻
I am right now going through the same pain, my cat keeps finding ways to get out. It is funny, my cat looks exactly like yours🤣 and his orange brother does the same, just watches. I am going to try the plastic sheets next. Thanks!
I used the scalloped plastic roofing panels at the base, on 12 ten foot long panels (gets expensive) then let weeds with thicker stalks grow up the outside part... as the kittens can put their heads thru the kennel fencing... we have coyote, hawks, owls and fox and occasional dogs in neighborhood owners allow to run loose at night... kittens do not know the dangers that lurk outside their (length of the house kennel-run).... so I’m doing everything I can to barricade the roaming area.... THANKS FOR POSTING YOUR IDEA... I may have to resort and buy more scalloped roof panels and affix them on top of each of my 12 sections...
Good job. Love what you did. I plan to fence in my yard for my 4. They are and have been since their gotcha dates indoor only. I am starting to feel a little mean.
I saw this video last autumn and I thought "BRILLIANT!" so I installed plastic sheets on my (chain link) fence. Then, in February and March, we had 3 RAGING wind storms (wind gusts between 60 and 82 mph). Guess what? Those plastic sheets act like sails! My fence was VIOLENTLY yanked away from the house and thrown into the yard, all mangled. So, good concept, but back to the drawing board for me.
That's a serious bummer. Depending on the length needed, you may be able to afford to build a solid wood fence, and add the plastic panels. This way, you have a nice wind barrier, which I'm sure the cats, or anybody in the yard would be happy about. Plus, you get the added privacy bonus. Please let me know what you come up with. I'm curious. I guess it's that "problem solver" part of me that want's to know if you found a good solution.
You can also add one half of large diameter PVC pipe (like 4" guttering) that sicks out on that side creating smooth hard overhang like they have on some prison walls. And there are various "pipe rollers" that are a whole 2" pipe attached so it can rotate when kitty tries to put its paw on it.
4 inch pop will work on some cats and actually worked on one of mine for four years. Couple of them still got out but after about four years they all started climbing over it so I replaced it and put a 4 foot garden fence on top of the regular fence and use the UVC or whatever that 4 inch pipe that’s about 10 foot long to hold up the garden fence or a few of the pipes of course because they can’t climb up. A 10 foot EDC pipe but if you put it horizontally at the top eventually they’ll make it over on most of them. Well I had two very team females they never went over but the rest did.
@@dennisellington-gt8de If their paws can reach the other side of fence / over the pipe, then add one more pipe. If their paws still can cross it, you got super cat 😅. The idea is to not let their paws have any grip. And it must be stick out on the side to create overhang situation, never at the top of the fence.
2sharestuff if it's possible, please consider updating your video description with the materials you used. This is fantastic & looks much easier than the 45° angled netting at the top!
+Yvonne Tota-Guzman I updated the description... I used PALRUF PVC Roof Panels from Home Depot. You can also get them at Lowe's, under a different brand. These are the clear wavy ones, which were about $15 each, for the 8 footers. Just search either site for PVC ROOF PANEL
And here in Australia you should search for "polycarbonate" sheets, they are usually 99% UV protected and probably (in 2024) about $30 for 2.5 metres. They are 2.5m long, but about a metre wide, so you can easily cut them down the middle, giving you 2 lots of 50cm wide sheets that are still 2.5 metres long. I reckon 50cm is enough to stop the cats from escaping. I am actually about to try this very method for my cats, so I guess I am gonna find out!.
Because of the scare of coyotes eating cats up here in upstate NY, now I have to put a fence up on my deck. What a pain!! But at least I can do it your way and not worry.
Love your suggestions. I try to keep other peoples cats out of my garden. Not sure if the neighbours will enjoy the new Colditz view, but they are not doing anything against the nuisance their cats are causing in my garden. soooo......
@@sarahallenhumboldt2638 I see. I have that set up for many years now. Works with my cats. Can't say anything about other people's set up - whether their net looks loose or not (should look a bit loose, not stretched), whether any gaps exist between the net and the fence, whether they have trees or other structures next to the fence that cats could use to climb/jump over the net, etc. I'd pay attention to those things as everyone's place is different.
I will install the 24 in wide plastic panels on a 6 ft tall wood slats privacy fence at 5 ft so it will be 1 ft above the 6f t fence. I have several cats that like to go outside but tend to kill birds and such. This way the birds are safe and the cats will have a nice area outside.
I'm currently fostering 5 kittens and am trying to figure out how to keep them from scaling my indoor pet fences. Plastic is a great idea. I wish the creator of this vid would answer the questions below re: material!
I have told a friend about this video. She has a problem with a couple of cats thinking the grass is greener on the other side. She too has a neighbor that doesn't like cats. When she lets 2 of her cats out in the fenced in back yard she has to stay out there with them so they don't get over the fence. And that really defeats the purpose of having a fenced in back yard. I was wondering if this is still working for you keeping your cats in. She wants to get the material but she has a huge back yard and is going to need several sheets of the roofing panels and it will be a bit expensive but well worth it if it works.
You have to check for spots they might get out. Video footage helps. We bought a home and moved, and I am currently using a low voltage electric wire at the top of my new fence, but one cat still got out, because the wire only sends a quick shock every second. There are alternatives, and I have linked a few below. The first one is similar to one I saw that used round aluminum rollers at the top of the fence... nice, but eventually he will figure out how to go to the pole attached to structure on the right (garage?) Or has he figured that out? Thanks for the idea, I started a project with this idea today!
Great idea. I have 8 cats but only 2 are making it over the 6ft chainlink fence. The other sides are 8ft and he found a weak spot...he uses the windowsill to catapult himself to the top of the fence. Rawr! I'm in Florida so there is retention pond behind me with a small gator and a huge lake next to that where his friends are I'm certain of it. Now I just need to figure out how to attach those panels to the chainlink.
I’ve been looking for something that will work here, but besides the fence, which is around the whole backyard, there is a tree they use to access one of their favorite spots...a flat-roof area off the garage, where the view the world from, when not roaming! It’s only 6-8 feet from the back of the yard where the neighbor’s fence is. Pretty sure the’d take the leap! I don’t want to take THAT away from them too, but the increase in traffic (speeders on neighborhood streets) is aging me quickly!
I tried this but I ordered marine plastic which came in a bolt and I just cut it lengthwise into workable sections. So easy, so inexpensive. You just staple it on.
If you have a link or the type of marine plastic that you mean that they can’t dig claws into, (not sure what kind you’re referring to, like vinyl for cushions?) I’d appreciate it. I need an inexpensive option, and maybe it can keep raccoons out as well...
Yeah, that's the way to go about it. If he goes over fence to the outside world without supervision, he may injure himself or another animal, however he should be allowed to enjoy the outside the fence world supervised. They need to have a life and we need to invest few minutes a day to allow them to have that while we are watching.

This works. My worry would be a windy day with the plastic. Check out the book How to Build the Perfect Cat fence by Sheila Shaw. It looks invisible- has step by step instructions- and DVD. Blacky is cute!
I thought kitty would go for the corner ends (edges) of the side of house/fence and somehow jump up to get to the roof (but I can't really see correctly because of only one angle ....)
That's a good point. Perhaps adding some type of backing, like maybe that thick clear vinyl plastic, and it would hardly be noticeable. I got a "Used: Like New" roll online, discounted, and it was in perfect shape.
Thank you. I'm thinking it may even be possible to save cost by cutting the plastic pieces lengthwise, thus getting twice as much length, but I'm not sure if they would be tall enough to prevent cats from reaching over them to get over.
The fence panels are pretty thin, and brittle, so you might be better off getting the "Corrugated Galvanized Steel Roof Panels", which are only a few dollars more, and way strong. Plus, the plastic/PVC that I used can get very ugly when it gets dirty over the months.
great idea we have a grt Pyr that jmps on fence due to lots of squirls running from tree to tree on top of fence DRIVING US CRAZY fearing he will crush fence
Would this work on a 4 foot fence? Wouldn't a cat just jump on top of it and catapult over? Trying to keep them out of my yard because of allergies and I'm tired of my entire property smelling like cat piss.

If the wood on the barn to the left was old enough, they would be able to climb up that. Usually an overhang is the only way to stop them, but depends on the breed. Some will climb upside down
@@2sharestuff Sorry, looked like wood when I first viewed this :) Cats can climb brick too. I guess metal would be a lot harder, but if it had a really rough surface they still might be able to get enough grip to rise the distance they could jump a little more than normal.
Wish this would work for us, our fence is only about 1,80m high and even with 80cm plastic foil one of our cats manages to climb over this plastic and the net which is going 30cm inwards on top of it. *sighs*

Of all the kitty containment systems, this looks like the cheapest, easiest to install and yet keeps your kitties safe.
Thank you. I'm thinking it may even be possible to save cost by cutting the plastic pieces lengthwise, thus getting twice as much length, but I'm not sure if they would be tall enough to prevent cats from reaching over them to get over.
What will work for a tall baby/pet gate that has bars and opens like a real gate not the folding crap
I thank you for sharing this video.
How thick are your plastic sheets? Looks like a polycarbonate?
The fence panels are pretty thin, and brittle, so you might be better off getting the "Corrugated Galvanized Steel Roof Panels", which are only a few dollars more, and way strong. Plus, the plastic/PVC that I used can get very ugly when it gets dirty over the months.
Excellent idea, well done!!
Do NOT use plastic. Aluminum pieces of thin pipe in a row threaded through with a solid dowel is more fun and less plastic at the top of the fence.
Brilliant idea! Thanks, going to try this .
Do you think that would work on an 8 foot brick wall? Put 2 feet of the PVC roof panels at the top?
great idea we have a grt Pyr that jmps on fence due to lots of squirls running from tree to tree on top of fence DRIVING US CRAZY fearing he will crush fence
What do you call (or find) that plastic you added at the top?
Thanks
Would this work on a 4 foot fence? Wouldn't a cat just jump on top of it and catapult over? Trying to keep them out of my yard because of allergies and I'm tired of my entire property smelling like cat piss.
Wow I do have a yard
unfortunately it’s not my house landlord is afraid of my neighbor to even put a fence which is horrible the neighbor just ponders around to where I’m renting and now has even decided to garden i have no control why go to court when the landlord is doing nothing I even offered to pay for the fence people probably saying can’t u control the cat no I can’t he has even jump out the 2nd floor window broke all the shades and the store wired ones At my previous place wish this was my house or that the landlord wasn’t such a punk i would had put this up .. thanks for the video for when I get my own house I will do so 😢
Hang in there, and I wish you the best.
I'm looking for a way to keep squirrels out of my garden. I'm assuming this would work for that too...
Probably a very good option.
You said plastic. It seems like the kitties could claw right through that. And what kind of netting? How would you attach it? Ours are so bored indoors.
google cat enclosures there is so much out there now

I used PALRUF PVC Roof Panels from Home Depot.
You can also get them at Lowe's, under a different brand.
These are the clear wavy ones, which were about $15 each, for the 8 footers.
Just search either site for PVC ROOF PANEL
I opened the papers today, and the headline was: Janky Plastic Sheets Beat $400 High-Tech Cat Retention System
Good work
Poor puss, cutie,i hate my cat going out in garden,we do let him but scared he ll get hurt, looked good on vid ur fence x
So what?
this looks great. What kind of plastic did you use and where can i find it?
+Paula Clack See updated description above. :)
The other plus is, if the cat gets out another way, it may climb back into the yard from the other side. Cat proof cat trap.
Bravo..yes, it is what i need....thank you ..God bless!!!
If the wood on the barn to the left was old enough, they would be able to climb up that. Usually an overhang is the only way to stop them, but depends on the breed. Some will climb upside down
To the left, is a detached garage with metal siding. But, good you made a good point, in case somebody does have a wooden one.
@@2sharestuff Sorry, looked like wood when I first viewed this :)
Cats can climb brick too.
*sighs*
