- Best budget torque wrench test and review. HHusky, Harbor Freight and Tekton
This is a review of the Husky torque wrench from Home Depot and a long-term update on my Pittsburgh torque wrench and Tekton torque wrench.
I review all three and test the torque wrench accuracy using a torque adapter.
Here are some of the torque wrenches included in this video (These are affiliate links so purchases will earn the channel a commission):
CDI torque wrenches: amzn.to/2Lwi8mB

Great Video ! A friend who operates a calibration lab explained to me that all modern torque wrenches use a special grade of "spring" , that does not take a "set" if left partially in tension. He knew nothing about the Chinese or other "low dollar tools , in terms of accuracy or construction. I am 82, & was taught many decades ago to always rotate the set sleeve back to zero after its use. Dunno. Thanks again for a great video.
Cheers! Brian
I've had the Husky for about a year. I have no complaints.
Since I 'm 68 and will only use mine to tighten up water pump bolts on my outboard motor...I'd get the Harbour Frieght I'll be going to Harbour frieght in 15 minutes...thx for taking the time to show us these things...
There's so many fake reviews on the internet. It's a pleasure to find something credible and straight-forward like this channel.
I have all 3 sizes of Harbor Freight torque wrenches that I bought on sale for $9.99 each. I tested them with my digital adapter and they were within a couple of foot lbs. That's great for what I want to use them for. the fact that the Husky goes up to 250 ft. lbs. is a good selling point.
This Husky 'budget' torque wrench is now priced at $95 at Home Depot. That's quite the absurd price increase, even given the inflation out there. Pretty much doubled in price! I'll stick with HF, thanks.
The Huskys are only sale right now. $60 for the 1/2 and 50 for the 3/8.
@@MrQtipI just got mine for 55 bucks home depot
@@lovefishingyellows Nice! I'm still happy I bought them, hope you enjoy yours.
have one those husky’s at work by far the worst torq wrench i’ve ever used 😂🤡
@@jacobmccoy2637 What don't you like about them?
Glad to see the tool comparisons again! Great information as always!
Up until I need to do something super-precise like a head-gasket (where I wouldn't trust any cheapie) I'll just keep rockin' my $10 HF. My wheels, suspension, etc. won't be too picky.
It's been a few years now but used my 10 dollar HF on 2 head gasket jobs on GM 3.1 and they both lasted 300,000 miles.
I actually think the harbor freight model is decent. It’s no snap on but it gets the job done
I have a 1970s Sear Craftsman Digitork in the years past Sears was great about rebuilding it for free and Calibrating it all I did was drop it off at my local store the blow molded case is also a cheap one like the one you featured I’ve been very careful with mine and it’s lasted me as a non professional mechanic
Good comparison , thanks for the info. I found a (looks to be brand new, still has the 'sticker on the side that recommends storing it at the lowest setting) CDI torque wrench on the side of the street up against the curb ( it is at an intersection that has a little bump in the road) any way stuff is always bouncing off trucks as they go too fast through the intersection. Back to my 'find' , it is a 250 ft LB wrench and I checked the calibration, it checks out good even after taking what must have been a pretty good drop off a truck. There are no scratches or scuffs on the wrench. "score one for me ! The last thing I found there was a spool of 16 GA wire. Love that intersection.
I thought for a minute maybe it was my 250 ft-lbs cdi wrench 🔧. But I checked the truck, it was still there. 🙂🙄
I just got one of the cheap HF torque wrenches to try to do basic stuff on my car. Took the brake calipers off, everything looked fine, went to put them back on. The wrench never clicked and the bolt sheared right in half. Yeah I should have noticed but come on, it was the first time I actually used it!
You're comparing a 250 lb-ft torque wrench to a 150 lb-ft torque wrench.
He’s comparing accuracy at 70 and 100 lb which compares to my spec’d of 88 and 118 lbs of my vehicles.
Yeah and one is brand new and the other 12 years old.
I have a craftsman torque wrench that is 28 years old and still accurate. I have the harbor freight one and the only complaint is the locking nut loosens up
Wow,28 years is a long time.
Back when manufacturers built stuff to last.
I’ve bought 4 Torque Wrench’s so far I’m 17 and have been working on cars, trucks, and farm equipment all my life and have been collecting tools for about 2 years, all my torque wrench’s were used when I got them, but they were in perfect working order, when I got them I recalibrated them myself. I always buy older US made tools when I can. I bought an old Proto 6014 on eBay for $10 and recalibrated it and it has been my daily torque wrench for the past two years. I have no hate for Chinese tools, but I just don’t like buying disposable tools. Love the content, keep up the great work👍
How do you recalibrate yourself the torque wrench?
@@busman7228 there are tons of videos on UA-cam about it, but to keep it short. I put a weight on the handle end and have the drive in a vise and if the torque wrench is working properly is should click, for example a 5 lb weight 18” from the drive will click at 25lb. Hope this helps.
I have the 300 lb torque wrench from HF I use to torque the suspension and wheel/brakes on my truck wonder how accurate it is. Thanks for the video!
I like the flex style torque wrenches, they are cheep and simple. But I also have the harborfreight torque wrench that I also use when you can't see the needle face on the flex wrench.
I've bought a number of torque wrenches over the years, and my first consideration now is to make sure that it can be recalibrated after I have used it enough to question it's accuracy. I'm an old school shade tree mechanic. I check them regularly and if one is out of spec I recalibrate it. An inexpensive torque wrench is better than none at all.
Admittedly, the most common use I have now is to make sure that the lug nuts on my wife and my cars wheels are securely fastened after the tires are rotated after the Quick-lube does it's $25 special.
Brake the anvil if u have to return it if the calibration is wrong lol
I’ve used that harbor freight one for awhile. I’ve had no issues. I just ordered the OEM 1/2” 250 lb nut buster I hope I’m not disappointed
Good work sir! Sounds like that husky is a bargain!
Happy new year Nice.!
I own 1/4" - 3/4" Tekton torque wrenches 20 in lb. To 300 ft lb. The 1/2" amd 3/4" have been flawless accurate
Okay, but then how do you figure out which brand/model of torque adapter is reliable, and when/how you must recalibrate that adapter?
@@erikk6604 that is a good Question. I do think the AC delco one i have is reasonably accurate but honestly i dont know. 😕
the tekton looks like the only one with the ability to calibrate. i can see the black looking hole near the handle ...looks like there is a sticker on there as well that says something. it has a calibration hole where you can verify accuracy and adjust with an allen key if needed. maybe it just needs to be calibrated. would be nice to make a follow up video on that i think. it may be the best torque wrench in your bunch.
Going to get a Husky in a couple days thanks to your video. Thanks!
I bought the Evercraft 1/2" drive version at NAPA (it's very similar to the Pittsburgh version) three years ago. It has been used a lot though not everyday. The only issue I have is the handle will not stay locked on the setting. When I have used the torque wrench to properly torque lug nuts I would notice the handle had moved up a little bit. Then I would loosen the nut at the base of the handle, reset the setting and tighten the nut again. I don't know what kind of issues this causes to the internals and I have never heard anyone discuss having the same issue. If the Evercraft is wearing out I may give the Husky some consideration. I have an Evercraft 1/4" in-lb torque wrench that hasn't caused me any issues at all.
I test & calibrate my torque wrenches and the cheap ones can be set for low only, middle only or high only. If it's set low high will be wrong, if it's set high low will be wrong. There are some that are good though.
If I was a mechanic or in a profession that required me to use one of these torque wrenches a lot, I’d definitely invest into a really nice one but for the amount of work I do and need one, the Tekton will do just fine.
I'm going to give this Husky a try. Been using a Harbor Freight that decided not to click at all today. I even lowered the setting to the lowest one and couldn't get it to work. I like that the Husky goes to 250 pounds as I have needed more than 150 in the past. Only down side I can see it that extra length may be an issue in certain cases.
The exact same thing happened to my torque wrench yesterday. I’m not sure what brand it was but I went with the husky.
Had the same problem with an old harbor freight. No more of that... Looking at the husky and the craftsman. I think I'm going to get two wrenches...smaller 3/8 and larger 1/2 inch. I like the craftsman but only 1 year warranty. Leaning husky because of warranty
@@louofm1 I ended up getting the Husky in both the 1/2 and 3/8 inch and have had great luck with both. Definitely recommend them. Now I need a 1/4 inch that reads in inch pounds.
@@CraigSmith568 thanks for the update. Maybe I'll wait for a sale. Really good one going on for craftsman but I hate that they don't warranty for longer than a year. One issue is that a lot of reviews of husky that show problems, where it doesn't click and people break bolts.....they do have have lifetime warranty but I don't want to end up with broken bolts either. Still torn on what to get
The husky was badass and held up until i bought a matco one, and then a snap on one. Totally recommend and will happily endorse the husky one
Hmm - just recently bought a Tekton 3/8, but haven't needed it yet. I have the cheap HF, too. Why did I buy the Tekton? Because I can read the scale! No need to convert Flbs to Nm! I assumed the accuracy would be within reason for my rare use.
Been wanting the split beam for a while but it’s $150. Can’t beat the husky for $50 and a great warranty
That Husky looks like a well built tool. I have a couple 1/2” drive torque wrenches for lug nuts and other higher torque specs but need a smaller 1/4” drive for lighter torque specs, I think I’ll check out a Husky for that.
Maybe I missed it but, make sure you note where they are made. Anything Chinese should come last. Tekton is made in Taiwan, a huge improvement over the Harbor Freight one that is made in China. Taiwan being an ally of ours and sworn enemy of China.
??? dafuq you smoking lol.
@@HiddenAgendas smoking? Read a book.
He doesn’t know the US Navy tries to frequently sail the Formosa Straight to signal to China that we will defend Taiwan.
F ccp
For beinf such sworn enemies we're also one of their biggest trading partners. Makes ya think maybe some of that is just political you know what swinging because politicians rely on drumming on about some Big Bad Evil that only they can stop! Just to not stop it.
Great video. Thanks for making.
My HF torque wrench does just fine. Unless I’m doing space shuttles, it does the job.
It amazes me how many people NEVER check the calibration of their torque wrench, even with a vice and a weight.
Why is that amazing? Most things you buy don't require you to recalibrate them or question their accuracy. Torque wrenches are like this but most things aren't.
@@dcgregorya5434 It is a matter of considering the cost or possible damage the tool could cost you IF it does fall out of calibration. Calibrating torque wrenches is a standard (often mandatory) requirement for this very reason.
@@dcgregorya5434 Professionals that take their work seriously and get paid to do their work, purchase torque wrenches that can be re-calibrated to avoid damage to automotive components that will come back to them and have them repair it for free on the second visit which is the reason professional techs buy top brands like Snap-On, Mac and Matco plus a couple others which can be sent back to manufacturers for re-calibration or repair. Try sending an off brand back to the manufacturer and see what happens.
@J. W. I have no idea what your response has to do with what I said. You realize a lot of people use torque wrenches who are not professionals who get paid for their work, right? Those people don't know what they don't know.
I need a good 3/8" -- my HF one doesn't click well enough
nice video looks like a honest price for what you are getting (at least the discounted price that is) .. now, not sure i understood your comment abt the lifetime guarantee and the calibration - my limited knowledge on the subject may be the culprit here but how can one expect a lifetime guarantee on the calibration which is per definition something which i would expect to need adjustment over the years - maybe thats also one of the reasons you can recalibrate torque wrenches ... just a thought.
To me its a no brainer. For the price, I can buy a new HF torque wrench every couple of years. Of course, I'm a non-frequent DIY'er.
Im just wondering. In what way did the TEKTON not hold up. ?? It is 4 yrs old. I would expect some slight inaccuracy after some amount of time. It was obviously your preferred torque wrench and was used more than the other. The torque wrench is supposed to be recalibrated every so often. And the Precision Tq.Wr. theyve since released are much nicer and far more accurate. It seems to be its held up just fine. It only needs to be recalibrated. Make sure you exercise your Tq.Wr. before using it.
My cheap HF torque wrench was accurate for 10 years. I also have other torque wrenches older than the Tekton that are still accurate.
Memories of Toolsrs Past! Well Done!!
I’d use the case, I would just cut the hinge and use the bottom as a tray in my box
"You should close your eyes" that me laugh, i like a little bit of sense of humor mixed with a good review.
I bought a Tekton off Am@zon in 2015 for $ 44.00 i think there $83.00 off the site now (8-13-22)
Mine has worked well and held up for me , i admit i don't use it a lot.
Can you do test on 12 vs 6 points wrench please? Im curious about the myth that 12pts will round the bolt head.
To set the Husky torque wrench, you turn it clockwise while holding down the collar.
Thank you for an educational video!
I have a couple CDI torque wrenches. Very nice no problems with them
Hell yeah you won't. They make them for snap on too.
Why would you not take the Tekton apart?
Agree lol,
Threaded nut sucks. It always loosens up. So I am constantly resetting the torque as I’m using it.
Great information and comparison!
Kobalt item #0337334 , 50-250 ft.lb torque wrench 1/2 drive made in Taiwan. 25 1/2 inches long. At lowes.
Engineers do calculate that percentage difference into the wrench. That’s why they never go down to 1 pound.
If the husky says 30 pounds, it will work without error.
I want to see the torque part of the mechanism. The ratchet really doesn't matter in a torque wrench. The markings are always hard to read. Why not just use the torque adaptor?
So glad you made a video! Haven’t seen you in a While!
Thanks for sticking with the channel. I've been really busy with my job. Now I have two kids, so finding time to make videos is a lot harder than it used to be.
Very good information, but it doesn't show how to use a torque wrench. I will search other sites....
Pretty funny how you extoll the virtue of the one that’s your current favorite, hate to let you know but the husky and harbor freight Pittsburgh are both from the same manufacturer
very happy with purchase
Nice video but I still wanna see someone compare the big 4 Matco,Mac tools,Snap-On & Cornwell tools.
Just bought a new Husky. The one I got has a nicer case than yours did. Has a see though top and latches that aren’t molded into the case. Thanks for the video, helped me decide which big 250ft-lb wrench to get.
Thanks for watching
Not a fan of HF torque wrench the markings are hard to see. Black markings on the Tekton is better.
Good information. Thanks👍🏼
I wonder where the craftsman ranks ?
When working in industrial environment we go with industrial standard usually snapon proto SK maybe but for your self I got a few HF one's but they don't get used on a daily job site inspector will fail you or take note of it for insurance reasons.
I agree, good price either way. Spindle nut is why im going to have to upgrade my 0-150 torque wrench. like and sub👍
Happy holidays Sir stay blessed hoping to inquire your suggestions for a 1/2 inch breaker bar
Any interest in tearing down WEN tools? Why or why not? Thanks for the vids, keep em coming.
I probably would be. I've heard of them before and looked at some of their items.
Just an FYI .... one of the other tuber video’s stated . When the professional calibration companies do a calibration . They Exercise the torque wrench before any calibration is done . Which entails setting it to a middle torque per the amount of torque the wrench is specified . Then pulling & pushing to the specified torque set . Approximately five times in each direction . Not sure if you did that or not . Let us know your results if that procedure wasn’t applied . ......... Curious ........
As a diy kind of guy it’s Pittsburg for me
do you think mastercraft or husky has a better torque wrench? i am leaning towards husky because the lifetime warranty
what torque wrench to get for a lawn mower? changing blades
Longer teeth on husky but deeper on other, meaning it’ll lock in more securely imo…..but I do get your point
I’m planning on buying one, but I know I don’t know which one I should buy. Do you think I should get the digital one? Will it be more accurate and last longer?
Husky vs icon at harbor freight? Which torque wrench is better
i had a harbor freight torque wrench. it would not click half the time if i am below 30 foot-pounds, making it almost useless to me.
The HF can be recalibrated, or just take it back and they'll give you a new one, I don't think Tekton or Husky offers that choice .
I'm interested in your torque adapter as well as the clicker style torque wrench. Can you recommend the best inexpensive electric adapter torque adapter available please? I'm thinking of the ACDelco ARM602-4A 1/2" (25-250 ft-lbs.) that I see on Amazon for $64.99, What do you think? Then I saw a UA-cam video and the guy says he thinks these adapters are cute but not as accurate or reliable as the old fashioned kind. He talks about the electronic adapters having a million ways to loose calibration or something like that. I'd get the Husky Home Depot one. Too bad they sell it in such a crappy case😩 Thanks for your help. 👍🏻
I wonder if you opinion changed now about tooth count now that quite a few test have shown that most low tooth count torque wrenches are almost identical. Between a 24 and 32 tooth there may be 1/2 a degree difference of movement probably even less than that .
I ve never used a torque wrench and I'm hearing impaired and I'm wondering if you can feel the click when it gets to the point it needs to be I don't see those old flex types anymore so my options are limited but I like the husky set up due to the higher nbr of teeth which comes in handy with limited space to move. Thanks for the great information
There is a slight break you notice when it clicks but you are better off with a digital one with notification lights, some of the cheaper digital torque adapters have notification lights or you can go by the read out on the screen.
Tekton has been great add on on my tools try the socket adpater
Great video!
Great video thanks
how about a husky spray gun tear down I can't figure mine out
friend that fixes them says Proto is best for getting parts 20 yrs later, Snap on? thats why you see em for sale, cant get a parts when they fail testing
I think you should re calibrate your tekton.then use it a hundred times on low mid and high range.and see if its held its calibration.take less than half hour to do all this.if its held its calibration then its ok.
I have the exact same tekton and was tightening a nut to 105 ft lbs and heard something inside snap or slip ...it was quite a bit louder than the normal click. Now it won't click anymore at 100 ft lbs it'll still click at lower weights but I can't trust it. I always kept it stored at 10 lbs like it said in the directions.
That Husky is $94 now
Good info mate.
When backing off the pressure to put the torque wrench away , should that little round lock knob at the very end be off (counter clockwise) or on (clockwise ) or does it matter?
I always tighten mine when I use and store it (after backing it down to minimum settings). It's just a lock-nut for the handle so that it doesn't move. Likely doesn't matter either way.
What about the advanced auto parts $30 torque wrench? Lol. I needed one fast and now I'm going through buyers remorse.
Just a suggestion here but you should simply the results a bit and put in in graph. It's easier on the eyes and save us times, no offense.
How many capitols per truck can it torque?
I want that Blue Volkswagon
Now compare the husky whit the icon tw12-250. I got the icon for $87.99 + tax.. a bit more than that husky but we compared it to my nephews snap-on torque wrench and my icon performed way better.
Im pretty sure its foot - pounds not pound foots, no offense to anyone but its a measurement of how many lbs at 1 foot from the nut or bolt or whatever. Not a measurement of how many feet at 1 lb because if you need to put 200 feet of pipe (or torque wrench) how could you accurately put 1 lb on without going to say 210? Plus ive never seen a breaker bar or ratchet longer than 4 feet let alone a torque wrench.
You sound like the preacher man in all black in that one episode of Trailer Park Boys. LMAO
you should of bought the new harbor freight torque wrench form their product line called icon supposedly its more accurate than the snap on 250 lbs torque wrench that cost 600
nvm seen your other video on it
The comparison TEKTON under $50.00 Husky over. $150.00 so tell me.
And the HF is $10 with a coupon. $20 without.
I bought a 20 buck Harbor Freight and it sucked. Never got a single click out of it. But for someone like me who will only rarely need to use these things we don't want to spend a princely sum. Not a great position to be in really.
thanks
