Paul Carrack's voice was perfect for Tempted. The vocals are filled with an uncertainty that makes you feel as though you yourself are the song's protagonist.
In reality does it have a true lead singer? Multiple people sing lines. He sang the beginning and the chorus but it’s a very non traditional song. Difford & Tilbrook are criminally underrated & under appreciated. As is Neil Finn.

I remember hearing this song randomly all over the place in the mid 90's... never found out who sang it until very recently in the past couple or so years. Very nostalgic, very soulful. I fell down a Paul Carrack rabbithole in the past couple of years rediscovering how many songs he sang on that I recognize from my youth in the 80's.
Thanks Professor, Paul and Elvis for a great interview. I was fortunate to see Paul perform 'Tempted' back in the early 80s while he was touring with Nick Lowe and his Cowboy Outfit. The venue wasn't huge which always makes for a better audience experience and there wasn't a bad seat in the house. They did a great version of 'Tempted' as well as 'Cruel to be Kind'. Great show!
Long time Squeeze fan. Love hearing about how this came about given Difford & Tillbrook had been the vocalists on everything else. As always, it's wonderful to hear the behind the scenes for so many amazing songs & artists! Thanks.
You had me at Paul Carrack. I love Tempted. It is on high rotation at my house. How amazing is Paul’s voice on everything he sings from ACE to Mike and the Mechanics. He is so talented.
The first time I saw MTV, Tempted was a strong song in its play list. I still love that song today. Over the years since I learned that Paul Carrack sang that song. Later I became familiar with the groups he sang with like Ace, and Mike and the Mechanics. But only after his song Don’t Shed a Tear that I realized that he sang all those great songs. Paul Carrack has a great voice.
My absolute favorite song. Everything about it. Paul's vocal, the bass, that Hammond organ, the backing vocals, and the low key drum work. Brilliant, should have been a huge hit in it's day.

Paul Carrack, one of the best voices to showcase some of the greatest songs brilliantly. A man who the vast majority of Americans would know his songs well enough to sing along to when they hear them, yet never make the connection to his face or name. I first saw Squeeze in Deptford in 1976, and last saw them 21st October 2024, and can honestly say, this current line-up is the best they have ever sounded.
Never realized that was Elvis with some of the vocals in there. This is an example of when you have a producer as talented as Elvis, you listen, no matter how far off the beat you might think he’s going at the time. It’s so fortunate they changed things up for this song.

Joe Lynn Turner
