Mountain lions, cougars, pumas; all the same thing, are impressively powerful. They are the second fastest cat, right behind the cheetah. A 150 pound tom can jump from a crouch onto a deer's back 20 feet away. At a run they can jump 18 feet high and 40 feet forward.

Florida panthers aren't the same as other's, though. We have lots of cougars on the west coast, but it's a different species. Ours might be larger as well, I know they will attack people here, and are big enough to kill horses. We've had friends lose horses to cougars before. They say you can fight off a Florida panther bare handed, but there is no way that's happening with the cougars we have, which are up to 9 feet from nose to tail. One cougar can take out 2 or 3 hounds, scary as hell to come across when you are not expecting one.

One of the cutest mammals I saw when I was a scuba diver was the harbor seal. It has big, "puppy dog" eyes. Anyway, when I would go spearfishing in Monterey Bay, I used a pneumatic spear gun. It would go CLANK every time it went off. This is the dinner bell to all the surrounding creatures. I was close to shore when I shot a rockfish in front of me. The spear was on an 8 foot lead. I reached out to pull the lead in, and got "one, two, ONLY TWO!" as they used to say on tv wrestling. A "cute" harbor seal had already ripped the fish off the end of the spear. That seal was about 500 pounds and twice my size. I used a pole spear after that. 😬

In the US in Desert cities, we look around for scorpions and occasionally rattlesnakes. The common dangerous predators in PHX are Javalinas ( If you are miles out of town) Cougars or coyotes (if you are at the edge of town), rattlesnakes, scorpions, if you are a little more urban, or black widows or brown recluses. Black widows don't bother you if you don't bother them, but they are good at killing mosquitos and flies. Of course, the city fathers of Tempe have created a huge tropical incubation facility for mosquitos, so now we have West Nile Virus and Malaria.

About the crocodile at #13: They're all over the place in the wetlands around the Kennedy Space Center. In a lot of places, the walkways are raised up several feet, and have downward sloping "wings" to keep them from getting on the walkways.
And the only one I've seen that lives around here is the giant garter snake. Garter snakes are fun. Even though they're not venomous, they'll "strike" like they are if you annoy them I'm not sure that their teeth can even break the skin.

You’re right about seals. I scuba dive, I’ve only seen the seals off the California coast. When the dive boat anchors off an island with a beach full of seals, the seals go crazy. They start barking and rushing to the water the moment they hear the chain dropping the anchor. They love playing with divers. We were at 30 feet, or about 9 meters, near the bottom. This seal kept dive bombing me and swimming under me. A few minutes later I could feel someone staring, I look to my left and just arms length away swimming beside me starring at me. We never touch them though they sometimes make contact with us either accidentally and occasionally on purpose. You can see videos of divers and seals interacting. Some of the best are the harbor seals. They tend to want to hug divers. It’s hard to avoid physical contact with them when they can out maneuver us so well.

The biggest threat for getting in my house is there is a few species of poisonous spiders around here. Friend of mine almost lost his toe in high school when it was bitten by a brown recluse. He kept his work boots in the garage and the spider was in there and bit his toe when he put on his boot. He only noticed an hour later when he went to take his boot off and he couldn't take it off because his foot had swelled up so much. They had to cut the boot off at the hospital but they told him that if he hadn't noticed for another 30 minutes that they would have had to amputate his toe and if he hadn't noticed for another hour they would have had to amputate his entire foot. I keep work gloves in my garage and, because of his experience, I always grab the fingers of the gloves and crush them before putting them on in case anything is in them.

I've had four brown recluse bites. I worked in a wood shop and they would hide in piles of lumber. They are so small and inconspicuous that they're hard to avoid. When they bite it creates the worst itching you have ever felt raised to a power of 10. Then it leaves a red spot about half an inch in diameter and as the affected tissue dies, a small crater is left which heals over leaving you with a nice scar.

In the Pacific Northwest, we have hobo spiders (throughout a lot of the country, really) that get mistaken for brown recluses, but try telling people it's NOT a recluse...anyway, they come indoors in autumn to mate, which is terrifying, they are a large spider. They are fast, too! Run like the wind! And for some reason...they like me. I opened the fridge one time and heard a "thunk"...when I closed the door, one was right behind, on the wall, not even an inch from where my hand had been. Another time, I wasn't wearing my glasses/contacts, and saw a huge dark spot on a wall, and had to get close to see what it was, and discovered a very large hobo spider. Smacked it with a magazine, it fell to the floor with a THUNK, and ran off! Their bites can be dangerous, though I'd never been bitten until last year, and it happened TWICE. HUGE itchy bump surrounded by a larger (4 inches across?) red area. But it didn't necrotize, so that was good. One on my leg, one on my arm.

11:27 It depends on where in the US you live. Salamanders keep to the woods and they like to hide under rocks and near ponds. They like damp mossy places usually. The worst I've had to deal with (personally) are spiders, moths, and bees coming into the house. The cutest ones that wandered into the house were tiny little tree frogs, and we've had birds fly in and fly out. Honestly just keep screens on your windows, and keep your doors shut if you don't want little forest creatures wandering in. Never open a door for a mountain lion, as majestic as they are, they are still lions, lol.
Raccoons are ever the opportunists, they will steal your dogs food if it's outside, steal the fish from your garden pond, steal your chickens, knock over your trash cans, maybe even fight your cat. The animal in that video of the girl pulled into the water was a sea lion, not a seal. Mostly, they're pretty cool water doggos, but sometimes they can be real bastards. I mean that "mostly" in a good way. The performing seals you see in circuses, etc. are actually Sea Lions.
Another note: There are plenty of species of seal, like the Leopard Seal, that are not only total pricks but apex predators as well. A full grown Leopard Seal could make a deli plate out of a sailor with little or no effort.

Thought I'd chime in. Here in Minnesota, we are laden with raccoons, various squirrel species, and chipmunks. All cute as can be. My wife hand feeds wild squirrels and chipmunks. She's an animal whisperer wannabe. By the way, did you know that those clever raccoons (and they are) are the species most likely to be afflicted with, or carry, rabies? They wreak havoc wherever they are; too clever for their own good. Also, if you try to pet a Pygmy rattlesnake, it will completely ruin a month of your life.........at best. Very toxic little worms. Tell Diane the Editor I said she looked exceptionally fetching in this episode.

Your mention of spying raccoons reminded me of Operation Acoustic Kitty, where the CIA implanted a listening device in a cat, to try to listen to the Soviets. It wasn't very successful and they wasted about $20 million on the program.
No, I don't live in daily fear of the animals here in the US. (But I would definitely be afraid in Australia.) Mostly all we get in our house is small-ish spiders. Twice we have had small lizards get in the house, but it's no big deal. I'm not sure what kind of lizard we have here, but it might be the Desert Spiny Lizard, or at least something that looks similar. One lizard I caught right away and took it outside. The other lizard was living in the house for a few weeks before I caught him and took him outside. But they're small, cute, and harmless, so I wasn't worried about it. My main concern was that it would crawl into someplace inaccessible and die, and then smell. But luckily, it didn't.
There are probably so many animals from Hawaii on the list because Hawaii is so far from any other land. Animals in the continental US often have a range which extends into Canada or Mexico.

I live in North Carolina in the SE USA and as far as I remember, (at least in the more metropolitan areas) the most common animals to look out for are mostly your typical pest bugs but we do have a LOT of spiders and snakes. If Im ever on the road tho, the thing to really look out for are just deers and pets ( ppl will typically let their dogs and/or cats loose, more so in the rural areas ). Occasionally you run into coyotes but they like to stay away from humans so you dont really see them that often. I think if you were to really look for wildlife, youd probably need to go into some forest or mountains here to see things like bears, wild cats like lynxs, foxes, possums. we got a lot of raptors flying around here now that I think about it also, Ive got a Red tail hawk that lives near my job that usually chase rodents in. you really just learned to live with it honestly, probably only half of the things here are'nt poisonous but the wild life can still mess you up pretty well regardless
