Everybody likes to romanticize the 80s and 90s as a time when "real" hip-hop was popular but aside from Big, Pac , and NWA, it's always been the poppier stuff that's been the mots successful. Parents weren't playing "Step in the Arena" at their kids' 10th birthday parties. DJs weren't playing "NY State of Mind" at high school dances.
