By the way, that first room with the large industrial sink was most likely the motel laundry facility. Every motel where I worked featured an industrial sink with plenty of slave for commercial washers and driers. This is from working in motels almost 14+ years.

That apartment you investigated was most likely where the motel manager lived on the premises as well. Some motels offered the option of living on property for the convenience of being located nearby. I once was offered the opportunity to be on “live in” general manager. I opted out as I received a better employment opportunity.

In late 1970s I was in the US Air Force, stationed on Oklahoma City, involved in 'TV Downtell,' a program to downlink live video from a screen of surveillance aircraft E-3A. During a two or maybe three week training mission with the radio tracking and receiving equipment installed and operating nearby on a tall mountaintop a bit east of Baker where there was also some AT&T long distance microwave equipment, several of us from Oklahoma stayed at the motel.
The room I slept in was facing the main street, had a normal size bed plus a single bed by the window by the door to the room in which I slept since I was the junior in rank person. Most of our meals were eaten at Bun Boy, and decades later I still have a recipe card for their butter thin pancakes that Bun Boy gave out!

I met a man at a convention in Colorado about 20 years ago. He was from Baker. He quit his maintenance job at Caltrans and, with his wife, started an orphanage in India. I asked him how he coped with the heat -- working outside on that blacktop pavement all year long. He just shrugged the question off, but I'm still amazed at the human race's ability to adapt to almost any environment, and move on to the next calling as the spirit drives them.

I lived in an old broken down travel trailer at silver dry lake periodically when my dad felt like parking there. Went to school at Baker school. One of my teachers was a Miss Pickering. Went to school there off and on for several different years. Once got to go to Bun Boy and have ice cream for some achievement or other at school, can't remember what it was. I think Bun Boy at that time was about where the Mad Greek is now. It's a shame it closed, it was doing good back then and was a great place to eat.

Wonder Hussy, many of these abandoned locations along the old Route 66 were very busy and popular back before the 15 freeway was paved and before reliable cars. Back then cars didn't do nearly so well in the sweltering desert heat and long drives and a trip to vegas would usually take two days or so. It is amazing how many old abandoned motels you find along the old route 66.

  • @georgebrannon942

so, just a brief background on that hotel, the Jacobson's were 1 of the original families in Baker, there are still several of them living there today.
the motel, was opened and operating up until about 15 or 16 years ago I think.
Carolyn, the mother of the family and the wife of Arne passed away, and things went downhill from there.
it used to be the spot to go for the high schoolers to drink, party, swim and basically just hang out.
now, onto a little critiquing of your video commentary.
    1) regarding the comment "remember when they used to make books out of the movies?", actually dear, most movies were books prior to becoming a movie. and books are typically far better than the movie adaptation.
    2) the Marines poster. that was a quail, not a peacock.
anyway, brought back a lot of memories watching your video tour.
and for those people commenting concern for your saftey, Baker isn't Los Angeles folks. for the longest time we used to be able to leave our doors unlocked at night. but still, when people that don't belong go snooping around, your neighbors are generally quick to point you out. and I'm quite certain you were seen poking around the hotel. there are family close by it still, and notice things like that.
    lol

    Hey Wonder Hussy!
I am truly enjoying your channel!
I think the main room you went to with all the floppy discs, etc was probably where either the owner/s lived or, management perhaps. In times past, in more remote areas, motel management often lived on-site. Maybe that was the case here. We will probably never know...
I used to be a full-time RVer. I sold advertising for RV Park guides. I worked in Vegas about 6 months out of each year for about 6 years. I remember seeing the old nightclub over on Dean Martin Dr. that has now burned. I used to travel Dean Martin Drive because I could avoid I-15 and the strip traffic, but easily access the strip as needed.
    Again, awesome channel!!!

Just watched this and really like how you go about exploring these places. From what I've found online this motel seems to have been operating until about 2011 but had already fallen in a state of serious disrepair by then, people's online reviews were devastating. A night was 59 bucks but apparently doors wouldn't shut, windows were missing, acs weren't working and cleanliness was not a priority. Seems like this place was as run into the ground as can be, wonder if Arne was too old or too ignorant to save it or whether there was just no clientele left for it. However I think I would have liked that upstairs appartment for its pure seventies style.

Arne died in 1991 and his wife Carolyn, died in 2009. Their daughter is Jannelle (sp) who a lot of the kid stuff belonged to. Their pictures are online on obituaries. I am not sure what he daughter does these days, and I am really curious to know why so much of their stuff was left behind. You'd think some of it they would have wanted to keep, or at least the daughter would have wanted to.

I like these travel videos where someone else does all the tiring, driving and exploring while I can eat my meal in comfort. It's like traveling the country and the world from the comfort of one's home. The tour of Baker, California proved interesting, for whatever its worth. If you were a teenager growing up in Baker I'm sure you spent all those youthful years dreaming of the day you grew up and could leave home for the glittering lights of Los Angeles. It must have been torture for the young people, feeling stuck, bored, and frustrated, whiling out their youthful years, waiting for the opportunity to leave while the lights of the big, dazzling City of Angels lay just a short drive away. I write, 'short drive', relatively speaking, because LA was still far away enough to make frequent visits impractical. LA was so close and yet still so far away if you were growing up in Baker.

That Zenith TV was $1000 in 1975..Super heavy to deter thieves. So says my parents. It worked great till 2008 when the picture was faded to green blue and the sound was getting a tad sketchy. Didn't bother me since the only think I watched at that time was black and white spaghetti westerns. The rollers on the base are so smooth and top notch I kept them. It was analog so when we had to get digital I would have to pay someone to haul it off the porch. Tubes inside old TVs, apparently, can be toxic if broken.

Your a crazy girl! Really enjoyed that vid.... I reckon the room that you explored might have been the manager/wife's office. Kind of a bit interesting yet sad... Thanks for the vid... Doug.

Interesting stuff, although it also provides an impression as to how much consumed junk 'just sits there' until some mega shift of tectonic plates plows the whole thing under. If you traveled South from Baker on Kelbaker Rd. you'd get a chance at the old Kelso Depot, a former railroad stop. The Depot had been renovated sometime in recent history and is one of the great old buildings of days gone by. Continuing on that same road toward I-40 you'd get to 'Granite Pass' and if you were headed W on a small dirt road you could hike to an abandoned mine-shaft I thought was pretty cool. It's located North-facing hill that's part of Granite Peak. Straight ahead would be Silver Peak. Cool area.

I do love me the Mojave Preserve...I plan to make a video there sometime! I've been to Kelso many times, as well as all over the Preserve. Love it!

I agree, it deserves more exploration. I've been there on a couple occasions, hiking up Silver Peak and Granite Peak (the latter is a grunt), and I've traveled through it via Cima on the way to L.V. and Zion. No crowds, which is nice.

Love that comment about the shelves of books. YES! Most of us had a lot of books because it was the only way to get & have vital information at arms length. Hard to believe that all of those books will now fit on a tiny chip once they have been scanned by a human! Edit...this shows how behind the times I am with tech stuff cuzz I think in 2018, it just stays on a server & goes out on the internet for access when anyone needs it.

Better have them in paper form. Computer reading is not convenient at all. It's all about ergonomics.

I said it before, but I love your style and approach to the way you do these videos. I can see that you are gaining subscribers at a record pace, and your channel is going to explode with thousands and thousands of viewers. I'm happy for you because I can tell you enjoy this, and you are a natural in front of a camera. You are very sharp and well spoken, and you do some cute shit. I love watching you and listening to you (and I mean that in the least creepy way possible). I'd like to smoke with ya one day :)
Also, I like the longer videos alot too. I still have to go back and watch that video with you at dusk near the swing as the sun was lowering it's big head, and your were waxing profoundness about people not appreciating the beauty of the desert. That particular segment was my favorite from any of your videos to date. Keep doing your thing. I'll be out here watching and journeying with you in spirit.

This may come to you a bit late but it's never to late to improve your camera operation/ Driving. Move/ pan side to side, up and down slower and hold shots with a lot in them so viewers can stop/ pause and look closer at what's in the shot. Move slower when going in on something for a closeup. That way the camera has a chance to focus as you move closer. There's a whole bunch to know about what I call Driving A Camera. Alwayz carry extra batteries and lights even when you may not need them. You Never Know Where Yer Gonna End Up. Keep up the natural narration.

So I know I commented just a few minutes ago but the further I got into the tour the more I was going WOW! We must have been from the same generation! I remember Microsoft Encarta and the PC games on the big ass 5 1/4" FLOPPIES back in Jr. High! Kings Quest comes to mind for those old games! If I was there with you I would have definitely taken some of the pristine floppy disks regardless of what software they were just for souveneers! They looked brand new! Highlights magazine! It was like you were walking through a time machine! You would be a ton of fun to explore weird places like that!

Bun Boy...best Strawberry Pie in the world....My mom and dad would take me there in the 60's on our way to Vegas. They would dump me at Circus CIrcus and they would take off to see Sinatra at The Sands. I was about 8 or 9. Back in the those days, cars were very unreliable and that's why all the old gas stations are closed, cars got very reliable and you did not have to stop to top off with water to make it all the way to Vegas.

Math 87 was a math curriculum I used in the early 2000's when I was homeschooled. With all those books, manuals, and piano/voice stuff the hotel owners probably homeschooled their kids!
