Dr. Gary’s thoughts on the culpability of the father who bought his son an AR-15 after he made comments online about shooting up a school are my thoughts exactly. I think the majority of Americans feel the same way, and so did law enforcement. Would this school shooting ever have happened if the father had bought his son a different Xmas gift, locked up all the weapons in the house and taken him in for mental health services? The son is obviously the one to blame for murdering and injuring innocent people. However, the father needs to be held accountable too, on some level. IMO

Calling the school saying my kid is not right today is allot to hand over to the school. What are they supposed to do not knowing exactly what the kid may or may not do? Why isn't the mother taking care of her child who is not well that day? The parent is passing the buck to the secretary who answered the phone that day at school etc. The parent just admitted I've sent my kid to school knowing they are not in a good place. If we had more or better facilities for mental health, how do we know they would be utilized by anyone who needs that? The parent would have to step up and take time and effort to get child help, and that's assuming the kid would stay there to get the help! I'm not against guns at all but saying "how many guns are in jail' is simplistic for this argument I think. Why are kids and others even resorting to this? Why is there so much " mental illness" these days? Why is that ? Is it all mental illness or individuals being entitled, spoiled, etc being raised by entitled spoiled individuals who may nor have regard for anyone either. I know individuals are facing mental illness, but don't think we can blame all crimes, etc on mental illness of the perp

I look at it this way…if the kid is too young to walk into a store and legally buy it himself then the parents should not be purchasing it for the kid….not of legal age.

Also her text she sent S.S "I can't sleep w Maddie anymore it's too risky " wtf is that about? She says many unusual things "stash" my daughter he could have stashed a body ? Wow

If the kid kills people w a gun from the parents home, there should be liability, if they get a gun off the streets than no they shouldn't face liability. The kid selling drugs most likely isn't getting from parents at home but if they did, that the parents should be held liable

I think the issue with Jennifer Soto is that she uses mental health as a shield, and yet it falls apart when she's selectively invoking it like a sword. It triggers so many, because it's demonstrative of something more calculative. Yet it only serves to undermine this gullible/ I'm not smart/ I'm a victim narrative. What's troubling is she is apt enough at selectively invoking this narrative or sword, yet lacks the intelligence or social acuity to pull it off. Someone who is gullible for example doesn't need to state it, they just behave in gullible ways. Jennifer Soto's behaviour is demonstrative of a cognitive ability sufficient enough so as to selectively recall and forget details that would otherwise incriminate her, yet we are left scratching our heads because she doesn't quite have a grasp on the social nuances or dynamics going on to be able to pull it off. I think the "feeling" so many of us are triggered by, yet simultaneously confounded by is the above.

Also her behaviour/responses are not consistent. She can in fact be emotional/distraught, just that it is when it about herself or Sterns. Talk of her de@d child = NOTHING.

The parallel is wrong. The Colt situation is like... the cops warn you your son had threatened to drive a car, underage, and slam it into people. You then gift him for Christmas a car, knowing he's a young teen who can't legally drive, and he does exactly what he fantasized about doing. Yes, that would be a crime. Get it?
We all have great respect for each other so please don't misread our differences in opinion as anything but just that.

Seeing the interview with Jenn following the police showing her the pictures, she was sitting there talking.
If that situation involved my granddaughter, I couldn't be sitting there. My blood pressure raises just thinking about it. It was almost like she already knew it and dealt with it. I will be honest regardless if it isn't popular, someone who molested my granddaughter would not make it to prison UNLESS he were to get to jail and beg them to save him. I talk to my granddaughters all the time.
I don't assume someone is innocent. Bringing in another person around my grandkids is huge to me. I couldn't ever allow someone in my bed and my granddaughter in the same bed. I think it should be instincts. We can't just trust people. I have trust issues and there are reasons. Idk about Jenn. I found myself hollering at her during the interview. I don't think she participated but I can't believe she didn't know. Stevie Wonder would have seen it. When there is a physical relationship, it shows. There's something there you can see. It's horrifying that she was abused all those years then murdered.

Holding parents accountable for negligence and culpability when enabling negative consequences should be done. We need laws that any threat of shooting up schools is taken seriously and mandatory removal and access to any weapons is implemented. Mental Health is mandatory and follow up for next 5 plus years. Children's services when called for abuse by parents need to do better and get all involved mental health help and get these kids out of these damaging homes. bullying in schools etc is at all time high thanks to social media. Too many sui cides due to it and threats of retaliation via shootings.... we need to hold bulies accountable as well. and that does include parents. Too many people are crappy parents... they need to smarten up. As for drugs and deaths all dealers are responsible. no matter the age, we have laws that exist for that..

I absolutely love the debate going on and I agree with both of you actually. My opinion is that these situations should create a NEW kind of charge, but under the category of something like neglect instead of manslaughter. Like put it on the same level as the extreme ones, but give it a different name so that it specifies that the negligence results in the death of others and not the child themselves. But obviously putting this in place will take a lot longer to do than dropping a manslaughter charge.... (apologies ahead of time if I got any legal terms wrong haha)

How about not allowing anyone under 21 to own a gun and have to take gun responsibility lessons that they must complete and own a certificate to prove this. A Doctor should also sign as to the mental fitness to own the gun. After all you can't legally drink alcohol or smoke until you are 21. Thanks for this great chat tonight.

I’m the car analogy I think the parent should be charged with neglect (?) and the child needs to have consequences, possibly manslaughter. I don’t know the US law on the age of the child being a factor.
In the UK , the Jamie Bulger case, the offending children ages approximately 8 years old were charged and convicted of murders. Held in a young offender’s institution until old enough to go to prison

I think yall are arguing different things when it comes to guns/kids/parents. I think when you have this conversation again, wrote down your bottom line and stick to it with your argument. All of you are right. My thoughts overall....everything you guys argued I would immediately say...that boils down to communication/relationship woth the parents and kids. In other words, most of these issues go back to that relationship. The loss of a true bond with parent and child. Children with a solid foundation and strong bond with their parents, don't shoot up schools. The gun argument here really doesn't have place here. They are our right. The argument boils down to mental stability.....where all of you started.
