    Jim Keller, the architect behind the original Athlon 64 and Athlon XP talks about the exciting new Zen architecture that has proven since to dethrone Intel from the PC crown.
    Since then AMD's market value has surpassed that of intel by more than 20 Billion dollars.

      +reymond seracarpio Here's a cookie for that well placed pun.
      To those who may be unaware. The successor to the original K7 Athlon CPU microarchitecture and the world's first ever 64bit x86 CPU microarchitecture was code named "Hammer" or alternatively "SledgeHammer".
      Better known as K8, Keller had a hand in forging this Hammer which enabled AMD to break the back of Intel and control 50% share of market for a brief period of time. The only period of time the company had ever controlled as much market share in its history.

      ***** buying just specifics not from there is not going to hurt Intel at all though. More people will buy Intel than will boycott regardless of some hate you have for a specific country. Intel last I knew made most of it's money within the USA and Asia. AMD is also an American company. You buying either actually has no effect on the country you hate when they are both rooted in the USA that supports Israel. Your logic doesn't seem to incorporate this. Unless you can find a chip fab with modern architecture not founded and operated from the USA then you are S.O.L.

      +Raidenway The principle behind AMD's octa-core versus Intel's quad-core is that to the operating system, they were both octa-cores. It was simply a different way of handling the core design, and ultimately, Intel's was stronger.

    Merging ARM and x86 is interesting. I'd love to see something of a Hybrid between Windows 8 and Windows RT in the future with this kind of platform. Where the core OS that doesn't need to be high performance itself can use ARM cores to save battery life in a notebook, and then there are the x86 cores as well for high performance and legacy applications.

    Intel is spending tremendous amount of money to keep x86 alive, trying to scale down x86 year after year for performance and watts. Too bad they are caught up in greed that they will soon lose out to this ARM market. Pretty sure later on they will try to be a licensee of the HSA technology LOL

    Only part that scares me is when Keller says they'll take the best of both of the designs they have. Maaaayyyyybeee if they ONLY get the best from Bulldozer, but otherwise I'd rather they just let it completely die off. Otherwise, I'm pretty excited. In Keller We Trust.

    • @Housesider
      @Housesider 9 років тому +2

      "Only" take the best from 15h (Bulldozer)? Jaguar (16h) is one of the best designs they've done in a while, and is pretty much superior to anything Intel has in that segment. There's a lot of IP and concepts they could leverage from 16h that would be fantastic for the new designs. But whatever it is they've reused, they've already done so as these architectures have been in development since mid-2012 or so (around the time Keller re-joined AMD.)

    • @SamuraiBatgirl
      @SamuraiBatgirl 9 років тому

      Naroon201 I haven't really even looked at the mobile stuff. Probably should, but I get distracted pretty easily... =P
      Sounds like if they used some of the Jaguar stuff, or at least the concept, it could help them a lot to get competitive with Intel again.
      Thanks for the info. :)

    I really love AMD and their processors, have been using them for years on. Still it was quite funny when Jim Keller said that the ARM architecture was so new and so was its echo system. Well the first ARM Chip was put to function in 1985 and the first desktop machine using the ARM cpu was The Acorn Archimedies in 1987:)
    So no the architecture is not new at all:)

      He left after 3 years. 3 years is enough to get the foundations down as well as most of the design itself. Jim left in September 2015 and it was rumored Zen taped out around end of 2015 beginning of 2016. 3 months difference-obviously that shows when Jim left Zen was basically done.

    how about a dual core with ht and insane IPC and L2 cache. This way we don't have to worry about poorly optimized games.

    • @TheCountess666
      @TheCountess666 9 років тому +4

      alamrisa we've long ago hit the wall of diminishing returns on single threaded IPC. improving IPC radically just can't be done anymore without a core that's either far too large and/or far to power hungry.

    • @malamri424
      @malamri424 9 років тому

      The Countess what about better memory controllers? the ones we have now on AMD aren't good. High latency when accessing ram.

    • @TheCountess666
      @TheCountess666 9 років тому +3

      alamrisa the difference in memory latency between bulldozer and intel's i7's at the time wasn't that high.
      the biggest latency increase came from the L3 which has a latency twice that of intel's CPU's at the time it was introduced, even at the higher clock frequencies bulldozer ran at.
      i dont like intel, (monopoly abuse isn't something that's forgivable) but they did a good job on their L3 cache's. compact and very low latency. i hope AMD can steal some of of their idea's there.

      maroom1 every single one of the things you mentioned we designed after keller left.
      And keller might only be 1 person, but as lead architect he lays the foundation for everything else. the main things letting phenom en bulldozer down were the designs. one was far to conservative, and the other far to radical for the state of current software.

    • @tylerweigand8875
      @tylerweigand8875 8 років тому +5

      +TAPS147 Not true... If AMD died anti monopoly laws would kick in and Intel would be split into two or more companies, and then we'd get multiple Intel's charging 1000 for an i5 :D
      So yeah, I really hope Zen is good. Competition always benefits the customer.

    • @ericfahnestock1031
      @ericfahnestock1031 7 років тому

      +Tyler Weigand the anti monopoly laws wouldn't apply. They aren't the only ones able to make CPUs. They're just the ones who make the CPUs that everybody buys.

    • @tylerweigand8875
      @tylerweigand8875 7 років тому

      Eric Fahnestock They're the only ones that make consumer laptop and desktop CPUs besides AMD though.
      Anyhow, we recently got a benchmark that indicates zen ipc is similar to Broadwell which in my eyes means... Competition! Sure, zen isn't gonna flat out beat Intel but it looks like it's at least gonna give them a run for their money.

    • @dycedargselderbrother5353
      @dycedargselderbrother5353 7 років тому

      Even in a true monopoly situation, at least in the x86-64 market, Intel couldn't charge $1000 for something like an i5 because no one would buy it. They can't just charge whatever they want and have people still buy. People already aren't buying at current prices.
      Also, there are too many similar products these days for something like this to happen. A $1,000 mainstream processor would just encourage further investment into areas like smartphones, tablets, Chromebooks, and set top boxes. They aren't 1-to-1 substitutes now but that would quickly change in an environment where the competition increased prices by 400%.

      Really and tell me what would that be? In single thread performance they aren't close to the I5 or I7. In multi thread performance they easily get beaten by the I7 and Xeon. In the server field again the Xeon is better and out performs the Opteron. So tell me where is the great chip you talk of that is actually worth buying because as of now AMD is virtually non existent.

    • @emmalong2178
      @emmalong2178 10 років тому +27

      Kyle G You're wrong about that as well. AMD still offers fantastic CPUs at and below the 150$ price point that frankly have absolutely no competition from intel.
      You can choose to glorify a brand and be forced into the ignorant pack mentality but that will only lead us into another pentium 4 fiasco.

    • @Housesider
      @Housesider 10 років тому +6

      Kyle G If you don't want a bundled CPU and GPU together, your only option is Intel's LGA-2011 platform, which is nothing more than a line of over-priced gimped Xeon processors which start at $550+ for the hexacores. Why anyone would want to go to that platform just to get another quad-core with SMT enabled is beyond me.

    And the fucking traitor left amd once again( or so i read). He didn't even wait for the launch of the zen processor, and joined nvidia. We need AMD to become competitive because once they do that, intel will be forced to lower their prices,that's ofc if they don't have some spare designs on the shelves waiting for amd to make a move. What i expect though is to see some drops in the i5's current price tags.
