  • Overview of the IDF install/replacement of the GNS530W and GNS430W to the new Avidyne IFD 550 and IFD440 radios. The swap was straightforward and had excellent instructions provided. A few programming tweaks to the xpndr and we were off and running. If you are hesitant about moving to the IFD's do put it off...thanks again to the folks at Avionics Source ! Fantastic customer service.

    I'm new to the GFC 500. Had my 2nd lesson using it yesterday. I noticed you hit the HDG knob (not button) to sync the heading bug with the TRK frequently. I just learned that from my instructor yesterday! Did not realize how important that was in case ATC asked you to unexpectantly turn to a heading. Thanks for sharing, I learned a lot from your video.

    Fantastic video. Not just to see how the GFC 500 works with the rest of the avionics, but I am new to IFR, so nice to see as many IFR flights as a I can.

      Thanks for watching ... IFR is amazing...just have to stay on top of and ahead of the plane and flight plan...

    I have a similar setup but with the Garmin 530w rather than the avidyne. Still learning to trust the GFC 500. At what point did you push the APR button? It looked like it was after HIXAR. Thx for the video

      I believe it was but now finding I can hit the APR a bit sooner than crossing the final fix. the approach does come alive on the G5 prior to the fix and goes into APR mode. if not selected prior to , it does not capture any vertical glide path

    Hi. I was going to leave you a question on your other video about GoPro Hero 7 but unfortunately the comment section on that video is disabled. I have a Hero 7 black and the cockpit audio wires from Nflightcam. For some reason I can barely hear the audio. I tried messing with the mic input settings (standard, plus etc) and it didn't help. Did you run into the same problem initially?

    • @fortheLoveofFlight
      @fortheLoveofFlight  Рік тому

      I will have to look into that commenting part... no, I run the audio from the back set jacks into the adapter for the GoPros or sometimes OSMO Action. What audio panel does you plane have ?

    • @ddll6709
      @ddll6709 Рік тому

      @@fortheLoveofFlight Just a standard general aviation audio panel (not sure if it has a specifiey name). I've tried 3 different Piper Warriors and had the same problem. I then replaced the cable. I've seen several comments on UA-cam about the same issue.

      Honestly I have not had any issues with the GoPros and audio...even Edward Frye has not had any issues, I have forgot to plug it in and also activate the rear audio jacks...but that is more cockpit error...

    Just to make sure I understand. You turned on the AP and then I noticed that you never took your hand off the yoke. Once you hit the AP button the AP was in control you just kept your hand on the yoke right? The AP was flying the plane correct?

    • @fortheLoveofFlight
      @fortheLoveofFlight  3 роки тому

      Jesse - I always keep the hand on the yoke (well most of the time), I just like to be on the safe side for traffic or and unexpected auto pilot event.. but yes, after the AP was engaged it did all the flying down to the point of disconnect on final.

    does yours shoot LPV approaches fine? I read about LPV being up to 200feet off after FAF (GFC500 +IFD issue). In your video it looks like GFC500 was flying slightly off the right of the centerline during the approach although enroute looks dead on track.

    • @fortheLoveofFlight
      @fortheLoveofFlight  2 роки тому

      Well it depends... some are great and some are off a wee... kinda strange , I shoot the 30 approach and sometimes spot on and others off to the right . Same with KHAF where I have had similar experience .

    Did Avidyne add the vnav yet? I have a gns430w in my aircraft and confused between getting the dual g5s and gfc500… or the Dynon & ifd440 with no autopilot as their autopilot is not stc’d yet for PA28

      Not yet, would be nice , but in a 172 I am not sure it is needed , just don't go that fast .... the IFD work great with the G5's

  • @TheCapTan

    Nice setup but what made you go with the IFDs over the gtn xi since you have a gfc 500. Vnav is a great feature.

      The ease of the replacement was the main factor, no new panel work, which was needed for the Garmin replacements and some rewiring as well. The IFD's just slid right in and new panel work , no wire and I did it all myself, did the log book entries and was done. All legit per the FAR's since no wiring was done and considered maintenance vs. something that would take an avionics shop to do. I think in the future they will get the VNAV to work ... or hoping so.

      Hands down IFDs are 10 times better than GTNs! I used to ❤️ GNS or GTNs, till I play around with IFDs. My set up is G3X, IFDs, GFC500. everything works perfectly! Hopefully avidyne will fix the VNAV soon. The new software update 10.3 will have lots of improvement. Thanks for sharing!

    Does your altitude hold take commands from your G-5 or the Auto Pilot face? Thanks for the info.

    • @fortheLoveofFlight
      @fortheLoveofFlight  2 роки тому

      It is set on the G5 and then translated to pitch in the panel mounted autopilot to the servos, once at a fixed altitude you and adjust the hold altitude in 10 foot increments to the next 100 feet up or down ..

      @@fortheLoveofFlight Thanks. I will see if they can set mine up like that. Maybe need some additional wiring to accomplish.
