Good question. I'm not sure what's the problem but I think it's that a fighter's job ultimately is to help determine the "ultimate fighter"? Maybe that's technically what their jobs are but wasn't written explicitly in the job description?
Use him as a stepping stone to fight for the title. Just keep him there as long as fights are entertaining

The issue is if Merab keeps winning at #1 spot and denying title shots then no title fight can be made without jumping the #1 spot. No title fights mean less ppv’s and UFC isn’t going to skip ppv’s.
It’s the EXACT same thing Sean O’Malley has admitted to doing. Fights chumps while making the same amount of money as if he fought champs and is waiting to renegotiate his contract for better pay.

I can understand where Dana is coming from. The UFC has rarely had a situation where the #1 contender is teamed with the champion of the same division. It shouldn't be like that. It disregards the point of the #1 contender spot. It's also a huge missed opportunity for Merab to be a champion, it's not something you should decide when to take, it should be immediate.

Yeah merab has got to figure something out. Everytime a champion has a training partner hit top 15 they stop training together. And it's no hard feelings but it just makes sense. For business and the success of each fighter.

But yet all of the fighters didn't even make what bench players make playing basketball lol. A backup NFL player makes the same as the best fighters in the world and they don't even play.
The only way it makes sense and you don't want to fight a friend if it's a situation like DC and Cain and you go get a belt in another weight class and come back when the situation changes you can't just stay at number 1 and never fight for the belt
