Such an interesting topic! I have been a vintage reseller for about 10 years ( eBay/Instagram)Through the years, I have loved watching resellers and content creators in the vintage/antique community grow their platforms “organically” through their true passion and knowledge. It was as if they truly wanted to share their collections, shopping experiences etc because they were just too excited to keep to themselves how much they loved what they were doing. I feel this is who you are… genuinely passionate about your calling so to speak. But it seems recently there is a growing amount of copy cat content that is not rooted in an appreciation of the history of the items, the nostalgia, or the wish to help others curate collections that give them joy. I feel in the long run, the accounts that will achieve the most longstanding success will be those that stay rooted in why they began the journey. Absolutely love all your videos and sales! Your integrity and knowledge mixed with your down-to-earth, humble and hilarious personality has kept me watching!! 😊

Michael, as I watched the playback...there were many topics that I found intriguing, interesting and helpful. Then BAM, someone asked you why you started doing this sort of video's. The emotion you showed certainly came ftom the heart and soul! You are correct in saying, you are a great person and you are well spoken and have a way of looking at things from many different angles. You have opened my mind on many different occasions! Please continue to being YOU! I'm lucky to have you in my life!

I applaud you, Michael, for doing this kind of discussion regarding "reselling". I am not a reseller, I am a collector and I have fequented "Savers" and local charity shops, looking for things I love. The change in the last few years has been great...now everyone is a reseller!! I see everyone on their phones looking up items or scanning books and CDs etc. I have a museum and art history background in both fine and decorative arts, so I often chuckle at the good stuff left behind for the "trendy" stuff people see on YT and on what the content creators tell them is "selling". Since I don't resell, I do often ask folks if they are reselling and point out an item they walked by but that is probably worth something and recommend they buy it and give it a go online or wherever they sell. And if it fits into my collections, I shut up and buy it for myself...LOL. I watch many content creators/resellers whose appeal is that they are bubbly, pretty, enthusiastic and I question how much they actually sell....and some are smart enough to expand their base and money making options through merchandise. or leading trips etc. Good for them..smart cookies!! And some are simply knowledgable, experienced and they work their tushies off, traveling all over the place, with merchandise for sale in all sorts of venues, but they appear to love what they do. I love the hunt and the "always" possibility that that unknown Rembrandt is going to behind the mirror at Savers and i'll be the one to recognize it...but I've had more luck on online auctions(even though shipping is ridiculous now), but if its local or a small object, one can acquire something worth more than one paid for it without fighting the crowd at the Goodwill or Savers.

I have a beef about UA-camrs that say to watch out for BOLOs and that this and that are hot sellers. It is all relative and there are too many factors to list for people to make such blanket statements. They can also be leading people to spend money they don't have, thinking that they'll make money off of it, just to find out they get stuck with something they don't want.

I agree about the need for deeper conversations. The world is complex & oversimplifying any situation can be polarizing & unhealthy. I don't have that Cancer flair. I'm a Leo & need to be liked - lol. So commenting with potentially unpopular takes is just not it for my mental health. Having someone I trust keep the conversation going is a great way for me to expand my bubble of understanding. I appreciate this chance & also appreciate your clear boundaries. This is such a lovely, diverse community & I hope it continues to grow & evolve & thrive.

Hi Micheal, I just watched your video and wanted to let you know I enjoy your channel for several reasons, 1. You have a pleasant voice to listen to and you come across as a genuine person, 2. I find the content ( especially at flea markets and antique shops ) informative on current prices and trends, and 3. You make it feel like I'm inviting a friend into my home.

The thing I know is that without Content Creators, I would not be a reseller. When I was just getting started, watching what other people shared gave me the courage and the know-how to jump in and try. Now that I have more experience, I realize not all advice is great advice but as with everything else in life, you learn and get better as you go. I still watch many content creators because I get a little something from everyone…even if it is entertainment. So thank you for doing what you do. I like reselling and have no interest in creating content.

I am a viewer, I now watch ALL content of 2 resellers and all their live sales. Here is the thing, when you search this subject many more channels come up on You tube if the search is under Goodwill, so are we driving the bus ? Or is You tube?

The algorithm is different for everyone. Reason being it waits for your input. It can only recommend additional content based on your search history and viewing habits. You see more "Goodwill" videos because more people search for and engage with that content.

I have to admit I am confused. I have watched both of your lives because I am interested in the topic. I shop in thrift stores to source my booths in vendor malls. I do shop in Goodwills and have seen their “pivot” to online sales and increasing prices. I fall into your viewer demographic. I was aware that creators received revenue from their content. I never thought for one minute that resellers were making a living off of thrift store content and reselling only. I do NOT want to be a content creator. You are very passionate about this topic. You discussed honesty, your faith, integrity and many of your viewers were very supportive of your character implying that you were doing this video because of your strong morals. I think. Again, I am very confused. You said you were trying to be a voice for the buyer. However, you said this was a no blame zone, you even said” this is me looking out for you”- and gave lengthy examples of creators using tactics to get viewers to comment. To be honest, this is where my confusion comes from. I felt like that I was on that hamster wheel you spoke of.

Perhaps the confusion, if I am correct, is coming in by the statements of "I don't want to point a figure of blame" and "I won't to make you aware of this behavior". I can understand how it would be confusing; however, I do believe, in this case, the 2 statements can be true at the same time.
Also, the "hamster wheel" comment refers to "content creation" needing followers to better support the business. It is faster to build a follower base with content that is misleading, i.e. I make a living by "thrifting." In fact, the content is what the main source of income is.

@@The.Cult.Of.Vintage I really am trying to watch your series objectively. I have learned interesting facts about Goodwill. Maybe I am looking at your series from a different lens? I may look at things in a certain way because of my experience in the retail world that I am now retired from. I will try to focus less on your intention and focus more on your facts. Thanks

@karencielinski Is the confusion based on what was said or on my intentions. I'd be happy to discuss either, but I just need a clear picture of what we are discussing

19:00 I was drifting away because of the shopping videos. I too am getting bored of watching that type of video because everyone is doing it and it's actually the easiest thing to do. Your newer videos take a lot of preparation and thought, unlike shopping videos. Responding to the most popular comment, I saw just the other day what looked to be a grandma with her daughter and her two daughters at a Goodwill and the grandma was buying like literally 60 pieces, if not more, of kid's clothing, so there are plenty of low enough prices for ordinary people to shop at Goodwill over retail stores. Not long ago Goodwill had half off on all clothing on Sundays and it was always a madhouse. I'm always seeing teenagers at thrift shops just like they did in the 1980s, so cheap or expensive greatly depends on how old you are. A 16 year old isn't going to use the phrase "back in my day" like us older folks do.

I believe, not all but many U-tube resellers (especially at GW) don't actually buy anything they filmed. I think they pick them up - talk about them - put them in the cart but don't purchase them at the end. If he or she is a reseller content creator and not an actual reseller - why buy items?

I feel like content creator is someone who makes up things for likes and views. Being a reseller is a teachable endeavor that not only shows us products but how to resell as well. I think they are 2 different things. If you become just a content creator....you will lose the reseller audience that tuned in for that subject matter...just my 2 cents 😊
