Gretna Football Club was once Gretna Green FC. Gretna Green FC went bust. Gretna FC went bust. But now there's Gretna 2008 FC!
It's a confusing but fascinating football story of a team who played in the English non league first. Then the Scottish Football League. Then Europe! But now they're a Scottish non league side!

A similar story to Clydebank with the new phoenix club. Can you name any others that have faced similar issues?
The common link between Clydebank & Gretna being Airdrieoniains
@@donmacleod2701 oh yeah of course. They all seem to feature within each others stories
Rangers
Not sure If the reasons were financially related but Histon, a small village on the edge of Cambridge had a remarkable rise and fall. 5 promotions in 90s went from Spartan league, 2 East counties divisions, Southern East, Southern Prem, Conf South then made the play offs for EFL. Knocked out Shrewsbury and Leeds out
of the cup and sold a player to Man U for 30k.
Now they are in Isthmian League
Should look into FalkirkFC's history from Historical Brockville Park ( home of 1st ever floodlights tv football match vs Newcastle United friendly Falkirk where winners ) to almost liquidation in 1997 to bring rejected promotions twice 2000/01 and 2003/04 to its 1st Europa league match at Falkirk stadium, also few Cup finals along the way to league 1 how the mighty Bairns have fallen Falkirk even today stil has 1 of biggest fanbases in Scotland more than few SPL sides and we should be in Scottish Premiership but we're not we fell into a ditch we're stil dropping
I'm a celtic fan and my first ever game I saw live at Celtic Park was against Gretna in December 2008. Derek Riordan scored for celtic on a freezing cold night. I also remember supporting Gretna in that cup final against Hearts and everyone being so dissapointed Gretna missed out in the shoot out. What a story they were and a great addition to Scottish football. I remember there was a documentary made about them also. The guy Brooks Mileson got cancer I believe and removed funding to pay for his treatment, then he sadly died.
Great Video. Just to say that the Anvil represents Gretna as the marriages used to take place at the Blacksmiths over the Anvil.
Ah right! Yes makes sense!
Great to see you getting around the clubs in the Lowland League. If you're ever struggling to get in contact with anyone in Scottish non-league, let us know. Keep up the great work.
Amazing, thanks so much will do!
My home town club Whitby Town fc used to be in the same league as Gretna (northern league) 80s -90s . The distance between Whitby to Gretna is 140 miles.Brooks Mileson was once a sponsor of the northern league and the president of Whitby Town .Great videos by the way love scottish football
One of my dads mates played for Gretna and the chairman would buy all the players cars, RIP Brooks Mileson. #Notificationsquad
Cheers for watching again mate! Glad I could make a video that's kinda related to you in some way!
Legend
I was brought up in Gretna and the story was absolutely surreal. Now living in Glasgow, very close to Hampden, I’ll never forget the Scottish Cup final in 2006 against Hearts
Love the videos mate ! Absolutely class keep it up 👍
Legend, thank you!
Brilliant again Sam.....👌 Bummer you couldn't get right in to the ground but at least you got a good view from outside... Cheers Craig. 👍
Yeah, it's a shame but I'll definitely keep trying! Cheers for watching again Craig! Much appreciated.
I remember when Derry City beat them 5-1 in Motherwell in that European game

It's actually been quite a mild winter so far here in Scotland.
Would not fancy a Russian winter though lol.
Enjoying all your work thank you
ha ha...who said Scottish Football was boring...lol Great vid as always. Crazy story RIP Mr BM.
Anything but boring mate! Cheers for watching as ever :)
Been to Gretna numbers of times with billingham Synthonia when Gretna were in the northern league great memories great video fella hope to return there when we can when they play my lowland league team the Spartans fc
another good one sam keep up the good work
Glad you enjoyed! Thanks!
Fascinating story! Great video 👍🏼
Glad you enjoyed it!
Good video m8 it's a great story for such a small club take care stay safe 👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks very much for your videos, hoping to go to Scotland at some point, great to see these romantic grounds would be interested if you will be visiting highland and lowland league grounds
Great information pal, awrabest, thanks for the video....
Thanks mate much appreciated!
Stayed in Gretna on my way up to Inverness after a day at the lakes. Stunning part of the country.
It was weird. A few miles separates Scottish and English accents.
Yeah so true!
@@FootyAdventures I didn't know what to expect but as soon as I got to Gretna the Scottish accent was spoke by all but us. A few miles back was all English.
Probably the greatest and fastest rise and hardest fall of any team in Scottish football history. I remember watching that Scottish Cup final. I lived in Edinburgh at the time, only about a mile and a half from Tynecastle stadium, but supported Gretna in the match. So I felt like a bit of a persona non-grata during the Hearts fans huge celebrations that weekend - LOL!
I remember Gretna playing my team Guiseley when they were both in the NPL
One of the best stories about vanity owners. People who buy clubs not to bring glory to the club but to massage their own egos. Its something fans should always be wary of. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. And OK, fans had a great few years but what profits a man if he gains the world but loses his soul. Gretna gained fame but ultimately lost their club.

Brooks Mileson was a Carlisle United fan & only turned his eyes to Gretna When he was told where to go when he tried to buy
my club Carlisle United he was not taken seriously buy the board at Brunton Park I am most thankful at this though I would say now we as in Carlisle United do need s change in ownership someone or a consortium with deeper pockets as we are badly needing investment on many fronts as are so many clubs.
I would describe Brooks Milesonas a maverick mad man with only the very best of intentions
he put money in to many different football supporters trusts.
I think of Brooks Mileson
like me or you as fans if say we won the lottery & bought a football club how good would any of us be as owners of a football club if it came to actually doing it for real.
Football Clubs need to be realistic about what can be achieved with the size of club I mean Gretna where never going to be
Champions League winners & nether are Carlisle United that's just not realistic.
I think from.a Carlisle United point of view the highest we could ever achieve in the modern era with the right investment is bottom half of The Championship just above the relegation zone in my view but that would take a hell of a lot to achieve a new Stadium for a start.
This was a good story to cover Sam.
Thanks for the info Alan! Glad you liked the topic :)
I heard that in when we played leeds in the 2nd play off of league 1 play offs we were told to lose
continue the great job
I'll try mate :)
Gretna were really destroying League Two up then League One and Championship in successive seasons but the Premier League was one step too far and went bust because the owner had health problems which sadly he passed away then the club just fell and crashed
I smoked a fat joint where he was at the start of that video
Very close to Dumfries, Mon the South!!! Buzzing for you to visit palmerston
I went yesterday! Video will be up TODAY!
I went to Raydale Park to see Leek Town play there. I also saw Gretna beat Partick 6-0 away a few years later. Sadly the all too familiar story. Harrogate will end up in a similar situation.
There used to be a greyhound track around the pitch. Then the greyhounds moved out to a stadium across the road which was only recently demolished
Greatest ever promotion was Gretna so amazing James grady scored in injury time to get promoted to the spl so exciting
When Gretna had that "Goal scoring machine" Kenny Deuchar they where at their best. Always remember Jeff Stelling on sky sports saying "It's over to Raydale and another goal". Yes it's the "Good Doctor" Kenny Deuchar who's scored again! 😀. Went to see them twice and he didn't disapoint! Had a few drinks in the club later. Cost us 50p for ticket for the club, all day! Absolute bargain and so friendly too. Great memories 👌.
Ever thought of purchasing a drone and flying over the stadiums?
Yeah, eventually I want one for sure!
I actually played in Gretna youth team and signed a youth contract and had it ripped up after the club went into administration and never played football again. I trained with Kyle Naughton
another phoenix club...a number of them in Scotland...great video...
Its crazy to know Gretna played in The Northern League in England, the same league as Penrith are in where you visited.
Yeah! That's exactly the level! Cheers for remembering the Penrith days!
Crazy! As a Carlisle and Workington fan I find it crazy they used to play Accrington Stanley, Fleetwood (remember them) and Morcambe.
@@jimmycburfield5997 I'd love to get down and see a few of them play soon if I can!
Another great video
Thanks again!
@@FootyAdventures welcome mate
Take a short folding stepladder ? so you can take pics over the wall - a lot of lower league & non league grounds in Scotland can at least be viewed that way, do a scan left to right to give a good concept of the ground. hope that helps.
This video is a history lesson of football .
I remember seeing Gretna play in the FA Trophy at the old Canal Street ground of Runcorn FC. They were led onto the field by a piper.
Rob - another North from the south (England) who has ended up in the North(Scotland)!
It’s incredible; the previous owner (God rest him) spent about £80million of his own money on the club and what does he have to show for it?
Played there for youth team and were in fa youth cup in England. Beat stalybridge away something like 5-0. Cracking team. Lovely place, lovely club.
Nice sounds good! Thanks for watching!
I watched them play a few times in the Unibond Northern Premier League against the likes of Trafford, Mossley, Warrington Town and Farsley Celtic and developed something of a soft spot for them. The supporters I met were a really friendly bunch and I got some right looks with a Gretna scarf in the back of my car traveling from Manchester where I lived at the time. The company I worked for got a lot of business off their main sponsor Ewart Engineering who I developed a very friendly relationship with, so much so that when I went to Raydale Park I was allowed into the hospitality room at half-time and given some delicious Scoth pies. I've been a hardcore Salford City supporter since 2007 and go to every home and away match - Covid 19 permitting - but will definitely get up to see Gretna 2008 when everything is back to normal.
Gretna may no longer be in the PL but your video is. The on the hoof stadium views with the rapid fire history was very engaging. The owner was too much passion DNA and not enough reality. A town of 3000 and promotion to the SPL was the reality that what Mileson wanted was never attainable.
Maybe the absence of the manager on the brink of a seemingly inevitable rise to the SPL may have been because he told the owner - promotion will plunge the club into debt not glory.
It was fun whilst it lasted. Another Gretna journey would be nice but not to the summit where there is no oxygen.
Thanks Sam, finally got to show my Dad this, he played for Gretna he thinks around 55/56 as a keeper. Is there a way to look up team information from then?
Gretna wasn't a fairy tale, it was an ego trip funded house of cards
I think you'll find mot of the EFL clubs will understand what you're saying in the years to come.
It’s amazing so many clubs come back to life
I think Gretna played some time the English FA Cup (1993/94 edition, i think)....and reached scottish FA Cup once in the mid 2000s....
As a hearts fan they scared us in the Scottish Cup final. Could have easily won it. It was a really even game.
They played a good few "home" games at Livingston as well!
You got your Scottish clubs in the FA cup info a bit wrong, but your content is decent, mate. Keep up the good work.
My bad! I thought it was Queens Park in the 1800s then Gretna later on? Thanks though mate :) More coming soon!
@HeedArmy83 they were the only team to participate between 1871-72 and 1884-85, but several other teams participated in 1885-86, and 1886-87.
@HeedArmy83 What's your point, caller? He said, "They were the first team to compete in the English FA cup since Queen's Park in 1887." That isn't strictly true.
Visited last night!
I remember going to see Ilkeston town playing Gretna in Gretna in the mid 1990s.
Nice!
It wasn't instant success in the SFL, they spent 3 Seasons in the 3rd Division, finishing 6th in 02-03 and 3rd in 03-04...
I remember watching Gretna play my local Village Team, Murton, the year they won the Northern League, 91-92, Murton were Runners-Up and Gretna put us out of the Cup in what was Murtons best ever FA Cup Run, Gretna would be knocked out by Rochdale in the 1st Round...
Saw them again a few years later at Spennymoor United...
Why did they choose to groundshare at Motherwell? Was there no other option, although it is over the Border, Carlisles Brunton Park is about 20 miles away, Palmerston Park in Dumfries is about 25 miles away
ground shared with us at fir park when they were in the top flight
Gretna played Hearts in Scottish cup final...they lost but they held out for a penalty shootout, they made it hard for Hearts 👊
went up from Wirral (TRFC Fans), to watch that game in with Gretna fans (can you do the 'Bouncy')...
Do u fancy going to any Highland League games. It may be a long run up to Wick academy, who are my home team but it's worth it for there pies haha
Yes would love to when I can!

Have you done third lanark yet? Because the man who scored their last ever goal (versus Dumbarton) Drew Busby ex Hearts striker own a pub in Dumbarton now called the Waverely. It'd be a great wee trip and story for you when things get back to "normal"
Great idea! I've done a video at Cathkin Park before. If you type in Cathkin Park Footy Adventures it should come up and I spoke about Third Lanark then. But yeah great idea, I'll get in there for a pint when things open up!
@@FootyAdventures he's got some great stories. Theres footage of him scoring on Europe for Hearts. I'm sure he keeps the old programmes and stuff behind the bar. I'm pretty sure there was some sort of Japanese fan club aswell. Great guy
You should look at the demise of King’s Park FC who were a major club pre-WW2 football team based in in Stirlingshire.
I'll add them to the list!
Btw when Gretna were in the top flight there was a rule were you had to play at a 10000 all seater stadium so they played at Motherwell and Livingston for the seasons they were in the top tier and not in gretna but in 2012 the all seater rule got reduced too 6000 capacity
Ah what a shame, so they just missed out!
That rule was so stupid it stopped falkirk from coming up in 2003 because there ground share with airdrie got rejected stopping motherwell from relegation
@@cs-of6wg and Livingston and ardrie have a 10000 seater and they both only sell half a stand
Stupid rule considering in Scotland most clubs don’t have 10k fans let alone a stadium that size so that rule just discriminated small clubs from playing in the top flight through merit, shouldn’t matter if the ground holds 5k it’s not realistic for all clubs to just develop the ground like that the money and fan base isn’t there
10,000 rule was reduced to 6000 in 2004 when Inverness were promoted
Just pushing the sponsors . Tuned out .
Sorry to hear that Geoff, I hope most people are able to listen to a quick sponsored message as it allows me to keep on creating the videos which are posted free to UA-cam. Hope you can enjoy my videos in the future. Cheers
Clubs like these come then go but fun while it lasts, the problem is when benefactor pulls out they cannot survive happened with rushden and diamonds and would probably happen to forest green rovers if there owner ever departed,so best to enjoy it while they there
That europe game they played was Derry city tc lost 5.1 and drew 2.2 in Derry who play in the republic of ireland
Yeah true!
Rangers also had a small matter of a uefa cup final in 2008
Yeah true!
I was gonna mention its a slightly bigger triumph than getting a trophy due to your rivals having a fucked fixture list
Remember there promotion on soccer Saturday against st Johnstone April 2007
Also I only stayed around the content from the ground
I used to have a soft spot fir Gretna.. I used to bet them every other week in the lower leagues.. Done me a fre good turns👌👍
Haha nice!
@@FootyAdventures lol.. The problem with greta was they progressed so fast that they couldnt keep up with themselves.. They were a great wee team

I believe it was his wife who removed all the funding as she became primary carer of him and obviously was able to control his money so removed all the funding from the club which basically sealed their future
Ah OK, thanks for letting me know!
Yes, his Family took control of his finances.
The Anchor probably represents the blacksmith where people get married
Ah right, makes sense! Cheers!
It's an anvil
@@meshborg9929 Sorry anvil, anchor lol must of been pissed when I wrote this , like I was when I got married at Gretna twice once at the blacksmiths haha
Where abouts are you the now?
You need to invest in some step ladders!!
I was actually thinking that!
Falkirk fans hated the SFA due to Gretna as they were denied promotion in 2003 due to their new stadium not being ready and yet 4 years later the SFA bent the rules to allow Gretna to groundshare and play their home games at Motherwell and get promoted. The Owner spent silly money on players but spent nothing on the ground.
It was a disgrace really. Gretna's owner had such outlandish plans it never was sustainable. Having seen them play in the English set up and enjoyed my visit, I hoped when they joined the Scottish League they'd establish themselves, but the whole thing just became a circus.
Do Dalbeattie star
Rangers played in the semis of the FA cup so your statement about Gretna being 1st since Queens Park doesnt stand up. Also Robert Duvall done a film based on them we super Ally.
Film had fuck all to do wi Gretna.... Unlucky tho buddy
@@dariocheese9240 Are u on a mad come down? Either that or u listened we eyes & watched we ur ears.
AFC Gretna the main team in Gretna now 🥴😉
Gretna needed a financer.
I believe The owners son took charge for a while but stopped the cash, I remember watch the cup final in tv , sunny hot day , they were sponsored by William Armstrong a haulage company until they hit the big time when Subway took over .
It wasn’t a sad demise. Everyone was delighted when they went bust.
No ur getting mixed up, that was rangers
@@crookedwinklepicker5901 and this scummy team too.
So much money was made betting on Gretna
Shows you the level of scottish football......mileson only did that with gretna because he couldnt buy carlisle united
Honestly, though. Delighted this club failed. Same as Rushden and Diamonds. Can't wait for Salford, Fylde, Fleetwood and similar scum clubs to go to the wall. I'll be dancing on their graves.
Why??
He killed that club it shouldn’t be celebrated
shame
Certainly is!
Only good thing about Gretna is the Gretna Gateway, only say that because I worked in the Adidas store there. But as a Queen of the South fan Gretna FC deserved what happened to them, they had no right to go as high as they did and it was far from a fairytale
