Great practical overview with some good information for both first time buyers and those who are more critically approaching refining the process of footwear selection. Thanks!
Anything like me and you're stuck with SIDI MEGAs and that's all you can wear! 2022 update: Pearl Izumi shoes seem to be pretty wide too (although just as expensive)
TheApothecaryAus Is SIDI MEGAs for big old flat feet by any chance? I've got big old flat feet and I always can't fit shoes because they make them too narrow at the toe box. Also, because I've got flat feet, I need a shoe that has no arch support whatsoever. Whenever I go to a shoe shop, because I've got flat feet, for some reason they think I need EXTRA arch support so they outfit me with inners that have very high arch. However they hurt my feet, and I don't understand why they'd think I need more arch support when I haven't got any arch. My feet are made flat, so why would they think I need flat shoes? I don't understand that, it confuses me. In any event, I always buy really cheap thin shoes from K-Mart or something, like the $5 sandshoes. Reason, because the more expensive ones have arch support, whereas some of the dirt cheap ones are made so basically that they don't. But that's good for my foot type. A minimalist type shoe type is good for my feet because they are flat, and also wide at the toe box. So I like very basic design, no-drop shoes that are totally flat, and wide at the toe box.
5:56 the only problem is for a long time nobody makes the shoes with cut like this (only sandals are made this way). Nowadays manufactures assumes the longest toe is the middle one. So far I didn't meet any human being with such feet.
I've been riding with too narrow of a shoe for over 3 years. This year I got plantar fasciatis because of this. I got it 4 times and it sucks. Most cycling shoes are 9cm wide. There are plenty of people that have wider feet including me. I've ordered a wide option from a well known brand to see if it's going to make a difference.
Hey ozcycle, Just wandering what brand the Velcro insole is that you used? I saw soles mentioned on it but lots of answers come up when I google this. Thanks
Thank you for this video. It's extremely good and useful information. Although, just knowing all this won't help me.. It just makes me more depressed, since I got know that my shoes are too large and I have to do something about it.. if I want to get my shoes to fit.. Seems that I've always worn too large shoes. Larger just feel more comfortable.. Or maybe I have got used with too large and feel wrong when they are right size? I measured my feet with a big vernier caliper. I got the length 25.1 cm, and 92mm for the width. But from the box of my winter cycling shoes(northwave celsius arctic gtx) -I read 27.6 cm.. (42 1/2 size)(10 for us size) and they felt quite right.. although I can stick my finger behind the heel, with only very little difficulty.. But usually for any shoes, for any smaller size, I don't feel comfortable, the sole won't feel comfortable, or the toe cap feels too narrow.. I think that for winter boots, like those northwave cycling boots that I have, are. Little more space in toe cap is better, when I can move my toes, they won't freeze.. But also my summer shoes are too big, I can stick one and half finger behind heel to my recreational mtb shoes.. I have high arch feet also. My first 3 pairs running shoes I had bought too big too, and my feet were hurting always when running on paved road with them.. then I noticed, that I'm crunching toes to keep shoes from moving and causing blisters while running, that's why the feet started to hurt. now I have smaller running shoes.. still too big with thin sock.. but they made big difference, just because they won't move around, while they have thinner sole and less cushion, they won't make feet hurts so fast... I think that finding fitting cycling shoes is more difficult. I have tried different inner soles on my current cycling shoes, for higher arch and so, but they had only little help.. Maybe because my shoes are too big..... Have taped some stuff under inner soles with adhesive tape.. That way, I got my first pair of cycling shoes this much comfortable, that my feet were not hurting anymore after a half hour of riding.. But I guess the shoes just aren't made for human feet. I'm probably only person on earth with true human feet, while rest of human population have something different attacked to the ends of their legs that only resemble human feet... That's why their shoes don't fit me. Anyways, your video was very helpful to me, since I got confirmation, that I'm on right track.. while thinking that only I have feet.. no I mean, thinking, that my shoes should not be so large.. Actually, I fell with bicycle a month ago. Stopped suddenly to avoid crashing with a pedestrian. And although I unclipped the right foot, the bike started to lean to left I was unable to unclip the left foot, when bike already falling.. I think, that I might have had more chance do get my leg free, if the shoes were not too large.. Also on my casual walks in town, I always get my legs wet and dirty from behind on rainy days.. I kick dirt and water up with the heels while walking.. I have tried to adjust my walking and got it kick up less water but.. I think, maybe I also kick dirt up from behind because having all my shoes always too big.
+Hardi Erstu Everybody is an individual Hardi. Perhaps you just havnt found the right shoes yet. "Bont" custom make shoes in which are heat moulded to the shape of each foot....they might be the go for you? Otherwise keep visiting shops and trying out their shoes till you find a good pair. Cheers....Steven
Lol Hardi you're alright mate. If any comment deserves a like, it's yours. I hope you solve your shoe crisis sometime soon and get those human feet of yours fitting shoes properly. Hey, perhaps you were right the first time in that you are in fact the only person who has human feet! XDDD
+Aaron ___ There should be no play if the velcos or boas are secured up. A firm fit but not squashing your foot out of natural shape . If the shoe length is good but too wide you should choose a brand/model that is narrower. Hope that helps
Just so everybody knows, to save you time, nobody, and i mean NOBODY makes an extra wide MTB shoe. Anything in the triple E or wider does not exist. If somebody says they do, they are lying! I wasted thousands on shoes in the last 2 years.
This video is a few years old now but is still very good. Just used this advice to buy a pair of shoes. Thank Oz.
Thanks a lot - for one of the best videos covering shoes!
I wish manufacturers would not only advertise the length but width of the toe box, too.
+EditioCastigata Yes that is a valid point
@@stevenleffanue and that's true not only for cycling shoes!
Some now do. Shimano has "wide" models and Bont and Lake have different widths with measurements on their sites.

Oz cycle you a awesome cycling instructor, love it
Really good video with great considerations on bike shoes fitting
Excellent video with very detailed explanation. Thanks.
What an amazing video! So helpful!
I've found most shoes quite narrow, shoe manufacturers should make 2 widths imo 👌
Exactly. I have to go a size up to accommodate my broader foot.
Very comprehensive. Thanks!
Excellent video....thanks Oz

what about side to side play at the widest part of your foot? Should there be any gap?

oz cycle thanks a lot. looks like I need to try another brand as diadora's are too wide .
Great video, very informative.
do I need cycling socks? I'm a commuter
Up to you. Any sock is better than no socks
Thank you so much
