To those who suggest ignoring Oscar: You can always ignore the problem but the problem will never ignore you. You are saying this as if you hold the power, as if Oscar craves your attention. You can always win a debate in your head with your eyes closed and mouth shut but at the end of the day, what really matters?

Or maybe the Oscar voters don’t even watch the films they nominate or even decide to see what on the For Your Consideration list. Honestly, what kinda matters to me is how much I like the film and how it makes an impact on me. And I’ll continue to support many of the snubbed people your talking about since I wanna see their beautiful work on the big screen. I think how we remember the work and how much we treasure it, will always matter more than some gold statue that we choose to act is valuable.

As a fan of the Little Women story, Gerwig botched the movie, so I'm not mad she got nothing. Even though the followed the details of the book more closely, the tone of the movie was so off and was actually very poorly made. As a 21 year old female I'm very alone in this thinking, but I stand by my opinion of her adaptation.

@@itsjustcinema Wrong! It's because primarily when women direct films, they are not as appealing to audiences as when men do it. The one film that was interesting in the least this year was Little Women and that was nominated for best picture. Yes the academy is primarily filled with white males, but they dont look at films based on the gender who made it, but the quality of the film. Mainly the most liked and talked about films this year happen to be made by male filmmakers: Joker, The Irishamn, Parasite, etc. Nothing against woman, but that is just a fact. Name one outstanding female filmmaker this year (besides Greta Gerwig) that truly deserved a best director nomination over Scorsese and Bong Joon Ho? I'll wait

Masters of Movies The only people who actually pay attention to the race and gender of directors who actually win these awards that… Let’s face it, no one cares about… Are people who are racist and sexist. The awards are not indicative of the opinions of the general populace. Just because such and such movie won an award, it doesn’t mean the audience will agree with that sentiment.
In the end, it really only matters what the audience thinks. Who cares if Hollywood needs to hit diversity quotas? What a superficial and stupid thing to worry about and make a video over.🙄

I don't think the solution to the problem is getting more diverse people to vote in the oscars. I think that movies made by diverse people should be taken more seriously as contenders. Except for little women, mention just 3 movies made in 2019 by women who are in the level of compitting for best director against the actual nominees like Tarantino, Phillips, Scorsesse, etc. Last year was very criticized for the winners that were in majority women and people of color and it was all not because of their talent (many contenders deserved more recognition) but because of the minority they represent. And you have movies like Black Panther winning many awards just because it’s a movie made by black people and it’s about black people. There’s nothing wrong with that but the movie itself isn’t a great one and only won for being politically correct, despite the lack of cinematographic effort. This is one of the few ceremonies of the Oscars where the quality is recognized over the political correction and you people are offended because they didn’t nominated enough minorities?

In his case about black people being nominated in roles about discrimination and racism, i think he makes a fair point and i agree but in his argument about women i think he is wrong movies like the irishman or the once upon a time were made for the academy awards, they fit perfectly. I don't think that the problem is that these movies were nominated it is though that those types of movies are always directed by men, of course a movie with robert de niro, joe pesci and al pacino will be nominated, but how many big budgets and big actors do you see in woman directed movies. And im not saying that this detail makes them bad, they might even be better but they won't be as big, and they won't fit they usual academy nominations.

The comment section of this video leaves me speechless. This video talks about the inequalities in the Oscar scene which is not new and yet you still manage to say "Yes but they wouldn't choose a film based on someone's gender or color" First of all in some cases, yes but it's mostly the system that encourages that, and then you complain that some are just nominated for their "diversity" because you just can't stand that the place of white men in the film industry is being questioned. Stop feeling like you're a target as soon as we talk about this kind of subject and try 30 seconds to put yourself in the other person's shoes.

@Alsizz, I agree with the video in saying that there is inequality in the oscars, but nowhere throughout does it address the issues with a solution. Master of Movies simply points the finger at the industry, like so many have done before, without offering any cues that may benefit the oscars or how us as a society may come to view inequality for what it is.
It has to be mentioned, that honestly, there aren't that many woman and people of color who are producing films. For years the movie industry was dominated by white men, and only recently have good directors who aren't white men emerged. You can't blame the oscars for selecting white men, when theres mostly white men in the industry to begin with.
But all-in-all, why should we even care? Over time, surly we'll see more and more diversity arise; but why care about it? Race and gender shouldn't even be a factor for individuals to receive awards, but rather, that individuals are given accordingly to their works. If you find that identity should be the driving force in giving awards in society, than you are no better than any alt-right skinhead.
"If you wish to stop racism: stop talking about it."

I think many people in the comments section are missing the point. On the topic of "ignoring the Oscars", yes this is fair. But seeing as though the Oscars are an insight into what Hollywood in general likes, thinks is trendy and thinks is prestigious, I think they are somewhat important. Other than Box Office Numbers, the Oscars are a way to see what Hollywood values. On the other topic of "they should nominate the best films", "it's not about diversity and inclusion", "maybe the white men just made the best stuff", "things shouldn't be nominated/rewarded just because of race". That's a really dangerous president to set.
It's not about being nominated and rewarded just because, it's about what's fair. People that look like me, women and every other race in the industry just want opportunities. That's all we want. And we want to be equal. I've did a whole video on the history of black people at the Oscars and spoiler alert, it ain't equal and white people get far more opportunities than us. I didn't even go into other races or women and that's a whole different experience. Also, last year, almost all of my (and imo the best) favourite films of the year came from POC and women.
I made a whole video on it so I won't discuss it any further but literally, "representation matters" and if the Oscars are the only insight we get into what Hollywood likes and what it finds prestigious, imagine what a little black boy with dreams to be a director thinks about when he sees that no black person has ever won Best Director. Or you could swap it out with a little girl and the seeing that there's only been 1 woman to win the award.

y'all talked about 'best' and 'quality film' like those things are objective.
OP already mentioned in the video about unconfirmed bias. Women and POCs already have to work twice as hard as their male, white counterparts but it still doesn't guarantee them a chance from these gatekeepers, so how exactly are they supposed to show off their 'best' 'quality works'?
He literally gave y'all facts and figures to show how unbalanced the playing field is but you still wanna talk about 'the most qualified'?
