Also it's good you use the entry level node to stream as that's what most people will use, but it should be said this limits the DAC ultimately. @@thevinylattack don't worry, my comment was for them. Nothing you can do for sure. Like you said, maybe they surveyed their "target customer base" and found out that they never use the cable.
@@thevinylattackI was surprised by this as well TBH. From a jitter perspective, coax should be the much superior interface (though apparently you can get special multi conductor toslink cables that try to address that). You do of course gain galvanic isolation, that eliminates noise transfer and issues with ground potential, which would be a valid concern for someone like me that mixes and matches components with and without a ground pin and connects them up using rca/unbalanced. I do believe I get superior results using a a high quality coax source with a good digital cable (1.5 meters). I try to get around issues with ground potential by running all my gear off of a single plug in the wall and making sure the polarity of the power is sorted (anyone who thinks this is BS can come over and listen to the difference in transformer hum and borrow my potentiometer to measure the different in potential between the casings of my units 😉)
I’m considering the Pontus II, but am concerned it might be too forward/textured in the midrange. I’m very sensitive to any midrange emphasis, no doubt magnified by the fact I only listen at lower volumes. This was the main reason I did not get on with the KLH model 5’s. I also had the Ares II, which I found lacked body in the lower mids, along with the occasional sharpness/forwardness in mids (a specially on vocals), that meant it had to go as well.
Great Dac I'm sure, but the made in China is a problem for me. Just would rather support American made products as much as possible. Really like the Schiit products as an example.

That depends on who you ask.
@@RigVader Coax will provide a higher bit rate and a more 'direct' connection. Toslink is completely quiet and resistant to any outside interference.
I prefer coax to toslink. Sounds better IMO.
I'm hearing that quite a bit. I'm going to have to dig deeper.
I didn't find it that way at all.
@@thevinylattack Pontus or Ares (or both)? 😅
@@RigVader Either is a good option, but I like the Pontus.
@@thevinylattack Thanks buddy (though I do think you missed the context of the preceding posts, but no worries!) 😊
Great Dac I'm sure, but the made in China is a problem for me. Just would rather support American made products as much as possible. Really like the Schiit products as an example.
Schiit makes some very good stuff, but nothing that can compete with this as of yet.
Toslink?? That's like putting regular gas in a sports car.
No subwoofer output is a deal breaker.
It's a DAC, not a pre-amp.
WTF, it's a DAC
@@craigrobertson9667 A lot of people run Dacs direct to power amp. I do, my dac has 2 unbalanced analog outputs and 1 balanced output. 1 set goes to my power amp and the other to my subwoofer.
@@thevinylattack and how does a pre amp send a signal to the Sub?
Through its DAC. Again, companies should start incorporating atleast 1 dedicated sub out if not two.
@@shinvergil All a DAC does is convert a digital source to an analog one. There are no speaker outputs on a DAC.
Just bought the pontus II used, I spent a lot of time on reviews, even listened to a friends system that has it.. now I just went through listening to some of my key reference pieces and I am not impressed.. It's boring, the soundstage has shrunk, I'm losing details, too silky and wishy washy.. compared to the 10yr old, $300 Maverick D1 Tubemagic I've had since new I expected it to take my system up a level, it's the opposite.. Maybe it'll work better on someone elses system?
Without trying to be an argumentative jerk, I don't believe any $300 product from any era can perform better than the Pontus.
Have you come around to the Pontus? I had the Ares II and I never warmed to it, finding my 10 year old £500 Rega DAC superior in every way (sound stage, imaging, flow, tonality, musicality, sounding less digital and hazy). I am still considering if I received a “dud” and giving a used Pontus a chance.. I mean, that many people cant be wrong can they? 😅
Omg cords....cords....wires to deliver power. I get it, Denefrips knows who they are selling to, lots of snake oil drinkers out there. To each their own!
I have a good laugh every time I see people talk about just which speaker cables and interconnects and power cables they had used with the equipment that's being reviewed. Many of them aren't well versed in electrical engineering. That's why the Audioquests and Kimbers of the world aren't bankrupt.
But you can't compare a beautiful looking Turntable with a
Clinical, sterile, boring looking box
looks cheap
You're kidding, right?
@@thevinylattack no i'm not. it's an oversized overbuilt generic box.
goes together with a 7.1 denon to complete a system with no taste no pride of ownership no innovation and never an endgame in site...
my old nuforce hd(299$) was also made in china ,it was a design masterpiece compared to any denafrips dac. the chord dave is one of the best designs ive ever heard and seen . even ifi products which are made in china as well look great ,sound great and never take too much space.
did you know that some ifi products have nos tubes? look for that in any chinese product...good luck.
my dac (1.5k$) was handwired for me by the designer .it's called border patrol se i made in usa with a nos rectifier tube. you will get more resolution from denafrips but sigma delta will bring you even more resolution so what? it's all about the T O N E. and it takes people with ears that care in order to get there it's not random it's not luck, it takes quality components and denafrips figured only that part and combined it with mediocre design ,ugly look ,the result: slightly over bright sound that lacks bass but hey... if it's not good enough there will always be the next model.
@@yaniv-nos-tubes So brushed aluminum, high-quality components, and overperformance for the price are cheap to you? Got it.
I will be more concerned about the Pontus II not being a true NOS than the connection toslink over coaxial or the other way around. Pontus does not offer a true NOS until 15th ed.
