    I used my Stage for about 3 hours last night at a local jam, with it at 20 and 40 watts using the Tweed Lead setting and 6V6 and 6L6, master on 10, controlling it from the guitar volume. I used my PRS SC-245 and Fender American Deluxe Strat with Raw Vintage RV-50 pickups, and both guitars are equipped with treble-bleeds. The amp sounded great, getting fat when at full volume, with nice sag and compression, cleaning up to nice highs and lows when I rolled the volume down.
    This is a great rock, blues, and jazz amp. It’s not a $2000+ boutique tube amp but I’d highly recommend it for a starting amp or a grab and go if you don’t want to bang up your expensive amp. I’d recommend the Artist model to anyone considering a Hotrod Deluxe for a pedal platform because the Nextone amps are much more flexible.

      Thanks for the 5 or so comments you've left on this video. I'm happy that you have found an amp you like.
      I however think it's a very mediocre release from Boss. The clean sound is ok, the drive sounds are just flat out bad. The modelled power amp simulations make a slight difference in the feel and sound, but it's very insignificant. The amp does seem to be a decent pedal platform though.
      I would never recommend this amp for a beginner. For half the price beginners can get a Boss Katana (which I have) with all the sounds from clean to crunch to heavier sounds. You also get bunch of effects to try out so you can learn how they sound and how to use them. No beginner will care about different power amp sounds nor should they.

    great video! It doesn't sound very impressive. Sounds like a transistor amp with very bright drive sounds that are not really usable. The depth of tubes is clearly missing. Great job on creating an independent review with an honest opinion.

      I counter that the amp has a lot more going for it than this video shows. I have a Stage and use it when I don’t want to beat up my tube amps. The Stage is very fat when cranked, especially once the speaker is broken in. The editor lets you do a lot more than the front panel and is where serious tweaking happens. Also, this amp needs the master to be turned up past mid-way, preferably 3/4 to full, to get the power amp working with the speaker -- that’s where the magic of this amp happens.

      Play it first then comment. I have one and it sounds damn good and takes pedals like a hot rod. Problem is some people don't know how to dial in a tone. No amp is Plug & Play and that includes valve amps. You have to dial in your tones. If those clean tones don't impress you then I don't know what will. Go watch that pedal show of this amp then come back and comment

    • @8sigreg
      @8sigreg 5 років тому

      @@tookamooka Yes, the editor has the ability to use pre or post EQ so you can adjust the treble response. You can also switch from EL32 to 6V6 which at cleaner settings would sound a touch fatter without losing the sparkle. BTW, the editor has a very nice sounding EL84 patch which makes the amp sound like a Marshall. I haven't tried it loud but it sounded really good at bedroom volume quickly messing around.

    I usually call B'shit when all these claims are made , tried the Katana 100 for 30mins before returning it (harsh nasty thing) so I ordered the Nextone' expecting the same hype and disappointment , Not to be , this is a revelation' dynamic, springy , and very very likeable , ok it could have had chorus as well , but this is definitely a keeper does everything I want an amp to do . Oh and the Custom’ settings are definitely the best sounding patches , far more live and valvey than the normal . This is back up for my Atomic AA12 + laney irt-x which is my gig rig . It’s light and small 😁👍

      Sure , one mans rock is another mans jewel' , I actually like the size/power ratio, the sounds are very usable and tweak able and its totally silent which is a big plus,
      roland/boss gear is pretty indestructible also , my other back -up valve' AV60 was very noisy by comparison, good but this is better . However I completely respect the views expressed and the comments made in the demo , very fair .

      @@CatPickStudios No problem. I think a lot of people are confused about the Blues Cube, Katana and Nextone amps and whether they're digital or analogue. Technically Boss aren't lying, but the way they word things can be misleading (mentioning about the analogue part but keeping quiet about the digital part).
      I did some research and found the article I linked and some quotes allegedly from the marketing manager about it. I think it's component level modelling like the latest generation of modellers use (Helix, Axe FX 2/3 etc) combined with analogue circuitry to make it sound more natural.

    • @8sigreg
      @8sigreg 5 років тому +1

      @@CatPickStudios The Katana is old technology now in comparison to the Nextone. They're not aimed at the same audience either; The Katana is great for someone just starting out who hasn't figured out what their sound is and wants something decent to learn from and the Nextone works better for the person who has an idea of their sound and wants an amp they can tweak themselves, kind of like a good modeler (though the Nextone doesn't do modeling at all).
      I use boutique tube amps usually, but want something I can subject to rougher treatment than I'm willing to do to $2K+ amps, and the Stage is fitting that bill. I have a small pedal board I don't use with the tube amps but can easily use to supplement the Stage if I want to get it sounding like the built-in pedals in the Katana. So they're very different amps, aimed at different markets, and the Nextone has a good slot in the Roland/Boss lineup.
      The amp, like all amps, needs some time to break in the speaker, and the player needs some time to learn its sound and behavior, to play with the editor, and to crank it up because at higher volume it really acts like what I'd expect from my other amps. With the master volume on 10 and at 20 watts it's a little beast.

  • @BV_Beve

    Cool ! but definitely love my Nextone Artist with the footswitch you have 2 channels & tap tempo & effects control with this. Find it very dynamic no latency at all. With the 2 channel volumes and a master volume you can push it still at lower volume and maintain tones. It can be a Rock amp all you have to do is put an overdrive pedal into the chain. Then it you use the lead channel set with some gain with either the EL84 or El34 then kick the pedal of choice in you get a much heavier usable sound plus you can also with the Boss footswitch kick the 'tone' in which acts an an extra boost. (check Rabea Massaad's first look & overview Nextone video & you will see what I mean) With the "Editor' you can preset different stored patches you can then switch through 'live' so effectively you have 2 lead channels & 2 dirty channels,' and that is not difficult to do and will remain stored in the amp so you can take to gig without the computer. Been very impressed with it, think maybe you missed a few things :) Hope the Flu has gone.

      Hey thanks for a great comment! Did you get a footswitch with your amp? Now that you listed those fun things you can do with it, it's even more a shame that this one didn't come with one. And you can save presets to those footswitches? That actually sound interesting.
      And yeah, I didn't have too much time with the amp because of the flu. I had it for a week and I was sick pretty much that whole time. :/ But based on me playing it at the store and at my home studio I just concluded that this amp is not my thing. It doesn't mean it's a bad amp and that someone else is wrong if they love it. I tried to make that clear in the video. :)

    What kind of review is that? You didnt try a guitar with a humbucker. You only turned up the gain on EL34's and you have your volume up but the master low? You need to get a humbucker guitar, 6v6, 6l6 with more gain and turn the master up and your lead down.

      If you are more experienced with this amp, would you mind explaining what difference that would have made? The different power amp + volume adjustment that is. To me that amp didn't seem like it would really overdrive in the power stage even if I would drive it. You can't tell it in the video, but the amp was LOUD in the room.
      I do have a humbucker guitar, but there's something off with the wiring right now and it sounds super dark. Because of the flu I haven't had time to fix it. That's why I didn't use it.

    I just want to add this not a SS amp..SS amp sounds much different than a DSP or frankly (digital). Digital to my ears continues to be work in progress..According to Fenders attempt at digital ( awful) Marshall ( wrose) Katana ( adequate) just tells me this area of sound needs much improvement ..I played the GT Mustang for 5 min, the sound was synthetic very digital nothing like a SS or tube amp..I played a cheap fender SS right playing the GT and it was far more toneful and realistic usable cleans just a much more authentic sound. SS is still a better alternative when using tubes as the benchmark..DSP or digital sounds to ne like olaying a cheap Casio keyboard the picked sound is not tube amp like or even SS like, it's something that bothers me because a specific demographic is esting them up..I dont understand it..I tried again XL 50 champ less than 5 min back in the box it went. This digital movement t is concening to me..If you think for one minute this amp sounds like a 6V6 or 6L6 tube amp then go for it and live in the illusion these company's are successfully marketing..

      Hey David thx for the informative post! After sending back countless digital/ modeling amps I've finally decided that tube amps sound best to my ears. I just bought an Ibanez TSA15h and about 15 min after enjoying the beautiful tube sounds, I smelled something burning and crackling/popping noise so I shut it off. After like 10 min I plugged it back in and same hideous crackling and burning smell. I'm sending it back tomorrow. They're trying to charge me shipping. I'm fighting it though.
      What tube amp (15w and under) do you recommend for under 400 bucks?

    • @8sigreg
      @8sigreg 5 років тому

      @@CarlitoM77 For under $400 you can't get a good tube amp because the components will be very questionable and will flavor the sound. To get the sound that tubes are known for figure on spending a minimum of $800 and turn it up loud. If you want reasonable volume and great tone you'll be well above $1500. I went through a bunch of cheap tube amps having them modded every which way and none came close to the sound I wanted. Finally my tech told me to just spend the money so I bought a ToneKing Sky King, then a Mesa Lonestar Special and a ToneKing Imperial Mk II, and absolutely love the sounds from them, and they sound good loud and at much lower volumes. Every amp will sound pretty thin at low volume because of the Fletcher-Munsen effect and will take a lot of tweaking to cover for that.
